#this is a problem i encountered often while seeing fanart of child rei or yakumo #if the artist doesn't colour them in i can spend 2 solid minutes trying to figure out who it is #a sketch? i'm doomed. greyscale shading? double doomed #it doesn't help when we draw sameface animesque a lot of the time #if there are no clues like the wibbliest wettest facial expression or an owl/snake-shaped object nearby... i'm outta luck #i have to rely on the orange/reds to signal identity #MY MOST FABULOUS FACIAL RECOGNITION SKILLS AT WORK!!!!#i try to ... make them... more visibly different when i draw these two together.#i say together because if i draw them alone?? all consistency disappears. i do what i want #but... next to each other... they must be separate-able #earring twins indeed. i can't be like 'one has a pointy face and one doesn't' because THEY BOTH POINTY #theyre BOTH lanky. with occasional VeryWide shoulders. so i must play up their facial expressions #uhhhhhh how about... give rei scruffier hair. and yakumo can have heavy straight hair. and... yakumo can have more eyebrow #and umh. rei... shows less iris compared to sclera? no big puppy eyes on this one.#yakumo should have fangs all the time because that is the enlightened way to live.#but rei could ALSO have fangs and it would fit ... ueghrg.... ok let's just hold off on rei fangs for now #give the wolf and the snake some visible fangs. rei is crossing too much into catzone and forgetting his bird roots #what about a beak? hmm... maybe we should start making rei's nose more prominent #so many of them have that 'triple bangs sections' hairstyle and it's throwing me off

MAKE HIS FACE MELT LIKE WET PAPER - rei must be the only one keeping his eyes open (respect for garu's directed gaze), but also suffering for it - quincy gets an accidental breast reduction 😔 (incurred from wanting him to look pushed back by the blinding light. boobs forbidden from poking too far into the negative space on the right) - blade's hands are not reading correctly so i'm confiscating them

haven't thought much about it because gender is wonky bopsy blurvy to me, and that smears the lines of sexuality as a result (as in, you could point at any character and give them whatever gender and i'd go " yeah. sure." which then alters their applicable labels re: sexuality)

i make everyone pansexual to simplify things😀 tho if you define "headcanons in the canonical game universe ONLY" then things get more specific
