Japan’s spacecraft flew by Earth to gain energy for its journey to asteroid and captured it

Hayabusa spacecraft is on a six-year journey to meet with the asteroid Ryugu, deliver several landers, snatch a sample of material and then return to Earth in 2020. The high-tech craft made an Earth flyby yesterday (3rd Dec.), a year to the day after launch, gaining gravitational energy to enable it to reach Ryugu’s orbit in 2018.

As it departs Earth, the only radio visibility for communicating with the craft will be from the Southern Hemisphere, and that’s when the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) teams up with European Space Agency’s as their deep-space tracking dish in Malargüe, Argentina, will go into action. ESA will include sending commands and receiving telemetry on its health and status.

Ron English’s “NEONATURE” at Corey Helford Gallery.

Opening on December 12th, 2015 at Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles, California is Ron English’s massively awaited new solo show “NEONATURE.”

English, known for his epic paintings mixing high and low culture, examines evolution with “Neonature.”  As English puts it, “evolution is everything - wings flap and echoes trigger new means. It is intellectual communication. What is a butterfly pattern but a flamboyant yet fragile grab at the chance to spread the dust of its wings into new and larger worlds, a chance to seed before being consumed.”

The show will be on display until January 9th, 2016.

Steve is an explorer. In creating his paintings, he has extraordinary patience for working things out. Often it is the imagining of a picture that takes the most time; hours, days or weeks of pondering and unravelling as he sits capsuled in his couch in front of the easel. Then, when ready, the painting flows out of him in an inspired frenzy. Other times he might just add a stroke then return to the couch to review the evolving image and plan his next move. The magic moments are when he touches the canvas and the painting “paints itself”.
