St Albert’s
Fish Fryday returns! St. Albert's!
Fish Fry Club is back!
When: Friday, February 20, 2015, 5 PM
Where: St Albert the Great, Seward, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, North America
Danielle says, and I quote: "This is the year I win at BINGO." Don't miss it.
At the Eagles Club in Seward. And then Black Rainbow in Shakopee.
Look it up, it's on the internet!
Tonight, the Twin Cities Fish Fry Club is expanding its horizons in a quest for an authentic Wisconsin supper club experience. So our destination: Bob's Sports Club in Hudson, Wisconsin. We'll leave around 4:30.
We're two weeks into fish fry season, and we have yet to win anything at the traditional post-fish gambling activities. This GIF illustrates how we spent the half-hour digestive period at the Mendota VFW. It's only a few seconds long, but extrapolate over 30 minutes and you'll see just how much pull-tab losing was done. Still, look how much fun everyone's having!
Tonight: We march on Mendota's VFW, eat their fish and their broasted chicken, and ferret out their winning pull-tabs. And (hopefully) drink some beer. They have beer, right?
The Twin Cities Fish Fry Club inaugurated the 2012 fried-fish season as they tend to do: By visiting Saint Albert the Great in the lovely (although street-parking-unfriendly) neighborhood of Seward in south Minneapolis.
THE GOOD:
-The fish. It was tilapia, which the guy selling raffle tickets over the microphone wasn't shy about reminding us. (He was also pushing the musical entertainment pretty hard, at one point calling it "Jazz in the chapel," and later adjusting the billing to "showtunes in the church," at which point we were plenty intrigued and impressed with St. Al's willingness up up their fish fry game every year. Alas, we missed the jazzy showtunes in favor of of the bingo. But more on that in a second.) The fried was especially crispy. I didn't try the baked, because it's not a fucking fish bake. And that's how I really feel.
- The spaghetti. I also didn't get this (see above). But Danielle and Claudia did and they both seemed to enjoy it.
- The desserts. As usual, St. Al's dessert table made the trip worth it. Homemade pumpkin pie, some kind of cream pie thing, brownies, cookies... they had it all, and we repaid their culinary generosity by shemomedjamo'ing. (Look it up.)
- The bingo. It was a packed gym, with $70 jackpots whizzing by so fast I had to use both hands to keep my bingo cards current. (Lauren: You're too slow to play bingo!) Danielle sat next to a guy with prosthetic ears, which was pretty cool. I wondered if he could hear, and Danielle pointed out that he was playing bingo, ya big dummy, of course he can hear. We closed down that bingo hall and even stayed for the final blackout round, which we had naysayed mercilessly until we were in the thick of it, and realized that a tight blackout round is as tense a sporting environment as you'll find in a church gymnasium. Danielle was shaking and at one point, I think, forgot to blink for about three solid minutes.
THE BAD:
We didn't win at bingo. Total bullshit.
THIS WEEK:
Where should we go? I propose somewhere in Northeast!
Fish Fry season kind of snuck up on us this year. But never fear! Tonight, we'll be here.
Last night was maybe the craziest Fish Fry Club meeting ever. More to follow, but for now I need to make good on a promise to Criste that I would blog about her.
Gardy's ready for Fish Fry! But where are we going? There are two trains of thought: 1) Back to a church, and Better) Somewhere that's showing the Twins home opener, like the Chalet, except D) Kate wants to go there for some reason, but she's not coming tonight. So what's it gonna be you guys??
FISH FRY RECAP: Henry's Cafe/Dave & Buster's
Last week, my friends went to fish fry, but I didn't. This is my recap what I assumed happened on their INTREPID EXPEDITION TO THE FISH FRY OF MAPLE GROVE
They arrive just in time to celebrate Taylor's birthday. Awesome!
Pay attention, Lauren, it's still Taylor's birthday.
Oh no! One of the crew members was zapped by an energy ray and turned into a plated pile of sauce!
Sorry, it was just some kind of tartar in a bottle.
Hey crew, how's it going? Good? That's good.
The DeRushas! So this is where TV comes from.
Fauna
Flora
Hilarious
By this time, my friendly friends had made friends with the whole town of Maple Grove.
Which is good, because then the Maple Grovians let them play games at their secret underground games layer!
I'm with Danielle
We're going to Henry's Cafe in Maple Grove tonight for All You Can Eat Alaskan Pollack! 6 pm.
Henry's Cafe 9691-63rd Ave N. Maple Grove, MN 55369
And then we're going to Dave & Buster's to play Skee-Ball.
Where's the fish?? Holy Family Maronite Catholic Church does it pesky pisces free.
Last week we went to the Holy Family Maronite Catholic Church in Mendota Heights. First, we went to the Holy Family Maronite Catholic Church in St Paul, which is the same church, just different location. If you google it, you'll get the St Paul address. Search deeper, for the Mendota Heights location. It's going to be worth it. Instead of the usual fish fry, this lenten dinner was fish free. That's right. No fish. But to make up for it, there was rice pilaf, green beans and tomato sauce, deep-fried eggplant, salad, flat bread, garlic sauce and falafel. By the time we got there, they were out of garlic hummus. But the garlic sauce was plenty of garlic.
Also, they had beer.
Did I eat a lot? Yes I did. And, because my dinner lacked the normal crust of deep fried batter (I skipped the eggplant), I didn't have the normal fish fry hangover. This was, pretty much the healthiest fish fry I've ever eaten. Two thumbs up.
Now, some pictures.
Look at that composition.
They had a survey you could fill out, like a comment card. I don't know many church ladies that are into feedback about their cooking, so I have to hand it to the ladies of Holy Family. First a fish-free lenten dinner, now you want to know how you can improve? These are some progression Maronites.
Danielle shows me her survey answers.
Claudia debates the answer to #4 while Becky stretches.
Chuck gives his take.
Kevin ponders the options. And wonders why his end of the table is bathed in red light.
Brooke thought fish free lenten dinner was an eye-opening experience.
Then, we had fun with an iphone app I have that puts hairstyles on pictures.
Yep.
Fish fry tomorrow night! Rumor has it we're going to Maple Grove. Details to follow.
Most Holy Trinity recap, featuring the blood of the savior, the tube of the sour cream, and a celebrity sighting!
Fish Fryday recap time! Cue the harp arpeggios as we swoop back in time to that happy day we spent in that church basement next to that highway west of that lake:
Hey jerks, look at the camera!
Much better. How happy they all look! It can't be because they're winning the 50/50 raffle, because nobody in Fish Fry Club has ever won that. What could it be?
That's right! Beer. And cheap beer to boot. Not to mention sour cream in a tube. Quoth Eric: "I never pass up an opportunity to eat sour cream out of a tube." Hear hear.
Not only was there cheap Labatt, but there were also $5 carafes of the ol' blood of Christ:
"Were" being the operative word, since it didn't last long. I don't know how that caffeine-free Shasta made it into the picture. Only tweens drink that crap, right? Oh wait, there's one now:
Untitled from Chuck Terhark on Vimeo.
And she's singing her hit song! What a treat.
Jk you guys, it's Lauren.
I did see Jason DeRusha though. That almost counts as a celebrity sighting.
Only three more days till it's Fryday again. I think we talked about going to that Lebanese place again. What say ye, Magnitude?
That's what I thought.
