Another day in the city of Davis! Technically, I do live here as a student. Today, I ventured further into the heart of Davis by participating in an art walk. Many of the restaurants, entertainment, and stores seem like family owned businesses, but that's my guess.
There are various pieces of art located around town that we were able to see such as a giraffe as our second sight. It would be pretty cool to wake up in the hotel next to the giraffe because you could see it from the balcony. It was pretty random too because of its location. Besides the art, the amount of noise that came from the railroad tracks were pretty annoying. At night, from my dorm in the Cuarto area, I could hear the sound of the train signals and the train rolling across the tracks. The train that I saw that day probably had over 50 cars carrying shipping containers.
One piece that I wanted to see in particular was the Yeti that supposedly "ran away." It would be hilarious to see a yeti running throughout the city of Davis, scaring people to death. In reality, it was taken in for repairs because people at the hardware store kept bumping into it with their shopping carts. Who knows? Maybe next time, the yeti will move and scare the shoppers.
Honestly, I would not have known about anything in downtown Davis if I did not visit. There are remarkable things that one could find. I found a couple of restaurants that seem interesting to try such as Red 88, a noodle shop, or Fuji, a sushi restaurant.
When class time was over, I was somewhat bummed because there was more to see. Technically, we were able to roam around and look at other pieces, but my venture ended abruptly. However, the abrupt end was so that I could go back home to SJ for the weekend. Home sweet home is what they say.
Later during the week, after a friend and I ate dinner, we decided to bike around campus just for the heck of it. In the meantime, why not venture into Downtown Davis again, except at night. The first thing we went to was John Natsoulas's gallery to check out the submerged man figure. The lit up figure appeared more colorful at night compared to how it was during the day. We continued on, but not too far because it was dark and I had a terrible sense of direction and I was as blind as a bat.
So far, I have been satisfied with what Downtown Davis has to offer because I might never know what is around the next corner just like a giraffe. Hopefully, after the midterms are over, I will venture back into the fray again to see what else is in store. I wonder what places are great to eat at or maybe even catch a movie.
In the meantime, staying on campus is not so bad. There are also handful of things to do here too such as the arc, arboretum, pools, clubs, and much more. Life in Davis, for now, is great and I hope it will stay that way.
