Bonafide Rojas is the Bronx personified. Born and raised in the South Bronx, Bonafide grew to be a poet, writer and musician who traveled the world but came back to the Grand Concourse, the street that raised him. Catch Bonafide at #SouthBronxLoveLetter this Friday, where he'll perform his epic poem "Love Letter to the Bronx" and talk about life and gentrification in his beloved borough. "South Bronx Love Letter" is a free event that showcases storytellers, artists, and community members sharing their love for #theBronx through true life stories, poetry, and art. Can't wait for tomorrow - we're presenting "Heart of the Bronx" as part of the "What Creates Health?" summit at Hostos! This event is bringing together awesome artists, activists, performers and local community organizations to talk about what shapes health in our communities and look at the intersections of health, racial, social, and environmental justice! From 1:00-2:00 join us in the Atrium for "Heart of the Bronx" with stories about health-related struggles and successes from Kendra Oke and Geraliz Castro, plus music that promotes wellness in the Bronx by North Star of Division X and ABE of The Peace Poets! #WhatCreatesHealthNYV goes all day: from 12:30-8:00pm there will be art, music and dance performances by local artists, and workshops and panels on improving community health. The Last Tenant Standing - MetroFocus

Director, Andrew Padilla joins us to discuss the film "Last Tenant Standing," which follows Raymond Tirado in his fight to keep his East Harlem apartment.

MUST WATCH - “Last Tenant Standing in East Harlem” documentary tells the story of Ray Tirado, who lived in the same building all his life, but is now the last resident remaining after all others took buyouts. Check out the interview on PBS with Ray and film director Andrew J Padilla (who was a storyteller in our "Uptown Social Justice" event one year ago today!) to find out what it's like to be the lone tenant in a building, and thoughts on the future of East Harlem.

Why Do We Continue to Ignore Staten Island?

There are plenty of reasons why we shouldn't be.

It's true a lot of New Yorkers treat Staten Island like the redheaded stepchild of the city, and in some ways SI needs more attention, but it does NOT need a Whole Foods, and it SHOULD NOT be the next Williamsburg! "Is [the coming New York Wheel] what the North Shore of the Island needs to finally become the next Hoboken or Williamsburg? It might be hard to imagine now, but every neighborhood in the city that’s had its renaissance was once ignored, too." <-- Argh!
