Vampires are associated with steaks not because they are wheat to wooden sticks, but because people would pin the body to the coffin by hammering a state through the chest. This would prevent the corpse from being able to remove itself from the coffin or by dealing sufficient damage to the body, so it would be an unsuitable vessel for the dark magic. 
Other people would attach sickles to the coffin at the bodies neck, so if it were to rise, it would decapitate itself. The point was prevention, not to add another weakness to the undead. 
Remember the best way to prevent an undead is by decorating the corpse.
