The man farthest down the bar has been sitting alone for the last two hours. His face, handsome in a sort of boyish way (somehow reminiscent of a puppy yet to grow into its adult paws), has been getting redder and sadder with every passing drink. Every now and then I catch him muttering something to himself, but when he’s not been drinking he’s kept his head firmly pressed into his folded arms on top of the counter, and it’s been impossible to make the words out.
The group of men I’m serving take their massive tray of drinks and leave, and in this rare moment of calm I very casually make my way over, mug and rag in hand to give myself something to do while I inquire.
“… Rough day?” I ask. The man turns his head to speak.
“Fuckin’ Jeremy,” he mutters. “Fuckin’ Aggie, too.” His flushed cheek is smushed into his sweater, and his eyes are glassy.
“What did they do? Jeremy and Aggie?”
“Well, fuck Jeremy because he was supposed to show up and didn’t, and fuck Aggie for telling me he’d be down to meet in the first place! I mean, who does that?? Why’d she even set me up with him in the first place, if he wasn’t even gonna show?”
“That’s rough. Is Jeremy your boyfriend, then?”
The man sits up straight (or as straight as he can) and looks at me while gesturing wildly. “He isn’t! That’s the fucked part! I don’t even know the guy so why do I care, right, but like, what if I’m so inhern— inhurnent— inherrntly unlovable that he like sensed it and went all ‘nah, fuck Simon, gross’ and didn’t even give me a shot?!”
“You’re probably not inherently unlovable. I think very few people truly are,” I say. He sighs and props his head up with his hands.
“What’s worse is this whole thing was set up by Aggie, of all people. Not only did SHE not even want me anymore, but now she’s gonna know other people don’t EITHER.”
The guy, Simon, doesn’t look unlovable. Not at all.
it took me two whole weeks to create this illustration... do you think it was worth it? 😂 a small tribute to the finale of the second act of arcane and one of my favorite scenes from the series. even now, i feel like crying every time i rewatch that final scene.. poor isha 🥺
