HI FALTFISH DAILY! I love your posts so much and am obsessed with different species of flatfish myself. One of my jobs is a saltwater specialist at a local fish shop and we just got in a zebra flounder and I IMMEDIATELY claimed him and put a hold sign that on the tank he’s super small and I’ve heard they get quite large he’s planning on going into a 90 gallon saltwater tank. I’m not a stranger to flatfish ownership as I have an army of hogchockers which are a type of sole. Do you think you could give me some in depth info on the species I know I could research myself but I just love your format and couldn’t jump at the chance to tell the only person who I think would be excited as I am lol. THANK YOU!!

Hi!! I'm so glad you like my posts and honestly I'm very jealous of you. I've never had the opportunity to own any fish other than bettas (and won't for quite a while because of my living situation). Please do send pictures of this little guy in the ask box!

Zebra flounder are native to the coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific, where they are most commonly found (and most comfortable in) sandy areas with lots of seagrasses for camouflage. They are carnivores, and in the wild their diet typically consists of polychaete worms, mollusks, small crustaceans, and other small benthic organisms. In captivity, they can eat live or frozen food like brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and small crustaceans.

They require a minimum tank size of at least 75 gallons (so your 90 gallon tank should be good!) with moderately deep sandy substrate for burrowing. In the wild, zebra flounders can grow up to 10 inches long, but in captivity they typically only reach around 4 to 6 inches. If taken care of properly, they can be expected to live for 5 to 7 years.

Zebra flounder can share tanks with other fish and are not really aggressive, though it is advised not to pair them with other aggressive fish species.
