What else could I possibly say?
This pretty much defines "whimsy."
This is a block of ice filled with garbage--most notably a couple of old bras. There were some knives in there when it first appeared on the street a couple weeks ago in front of a neighbor's house. For some reason--which is so far beyond me I can't even speculate--the neighbors have left this block of garbage ice to melt in front of their house. (I assume it's theirs as it appeared after garbage day.) I moved here from a very solidly lower middle class neighborhood. My neighbors were carpenters and lunch ladies and retired electricians, and they took care of their modest properties. So I've been a bit shocked by the state of disrepair much of this town seems to be in. I understand hippies and I have different ideas about what a lawn and garden should look like, but you'd think we could all agree that solid chunks of ice filled with garbage don't belong in the middle of the sidewalk.
It's coming on Christmas, they're cutting down trees, putting up reindeer and singing songs of joy and peace. I wish I had a river I could skate away on. - Joni Mitchell
Bead bathing is a regular occurrence in Vermont.
I almost forgot this video from back when it was still warm enough to go to Art Walk without a parka.
A little garden oasis.
A little tropical fruit on a cold winter day.
I have no idea what that second word says. Guesses?
Do as I say, not as I do.
Yesterday was the first real snow of the year. I walked to the winter farmer's market, and then later we walked to dinner and got a seat by the window where we could watch the snow go. All in all, a lovely day.
They say there have been two similar cases in the last three months.
It happens, even in small towns.Â
Good night you princes of Maine, you kings of New England! Does this look familiar? It might if you're a John Irving fan. Picture Rose Rose and Mr. Rose hanging out on the roof.
Vermont Vignette: Rehab
I want to preface this by saying I love true crime podcasts and the My Favorite Murder ladies would not approve of what follows.
Today, I was walking my dog. We came to one of the main roads near our house, and were standing at the crosswalk. I had my earbuds in (listening to MFM, of course) and had to take them out when a man in a car at the intersection leaned out the window to ask me a question. I still couldn’t hear him, so I had to take a step closer. (I could hear Georgia and Karen yelling at me! THIS IS HOW IT HAPPENS!) That’s when I noticed his face was scratched up--his nose and chin were scabbed over and bloody.
I grew up around bikers and other tough-looking guys who I know to be teddy bears who would never harm me--so even though I know I should maybe be wary of homeboy with the effed up face, I’m not really.Â
Anyway, I finally realize that the dude in this car is asking for directions to the Brattleboro Retreat... a fairly well known rehab that straight up looks like New England’s answer to Hogwarts and would be a lovely place to spend 28 days. I have to think about it for a minute, because I’m new to town and don’t know much of anything--but luckily it’s a small town and you’re never far from anything. So I give him the best directions I can, he thanks me, and is on his way.Â
Anyway, I hope he does well at rehab, and his face heals up nicely.Â
It finally feels like fall in Vermont and even the chalkboards are in on it.
It’s probably hard to tell from the pictures, but this art installment is about a series of floods in Louisiana. It’s absolutely fascinating to see up close and personal. Stop by the #Brattleboro Museum and Art Center. There is also a big Wolf Kahn exhibit right now.Â
Another installment of Black Lives Matter in Brattleboro. Sadly, the doggo and I couldn’t go in.
