Firebending Training Part 1

This story takes place 4 years after Sozins Comet. You are inserted into the story as a fire nation citizen.

Zuko: oh you're cold? I can fix that for you..

You look up at him and blush.

Yn: I didn't realize you were such the gentleman type.

Zuko: I can be when I need to be.

Yn: oh? And you need to be now?

You give him a side look and a crooked smile because you know he likes it. He winks in return and offers you his hand.

Zuko: can I show you something?

You take his hand, curiously and he guides you over to the water by your camp. The sun is starting to go down and your surprised at all the colors coming from the sky. It seems zuko is enthralled as well at the light show and is quiet for a minute before you interrupt his gazing.

Yn: so...what did you want to show me?

Zuko: well you know that we've been out here for awhile ever since we split off from the others and ... I guess..

He stutters and blushes, trying to word what he wants to say next.

You urge him to keep going with a little smile.

Zuko: I just, I feel like maybe you came with me not just because you wanted to learn firebending but because maybe you felt something that night after the battle.

You're kind of caught off guard with the look into the past. You also haven't forgotten that he's still holding your hand. His hand is very warm. You quickly think back to that battle. It had been a few years since the comet had arrived and Zuko was having trouble with people trying to Assassinate him as the new firelord. He decided to go off and find aang and gain some wisdom while Iroh held onto the fort for a bit.

Aang didn't know what guidance to give him so they decided to go on another life changing field trip together. That's when they met me. I was living on the southern islands from the fire nation, trying to convince my family that I needed proper training as a firebender since it had been 4 years since the comet had come.

Wasn't it safe yet to go out into the world and find out who I am?

Firebending Training Part 5

If you want to read previous parts, go to the hashtag firebending Training story.

You're not sure where he is going with this but you stay still, intent on not making this any harder than it already is for him.

Zuko: well everything you've probably heard isn't all true.

Y/n: what do you mean?

Your mind is racing a million miles an hour. What does he mean? This thought process can only be hurt for you. You can't think about how they could've broken up and how Zuko could be single and how you could have a chance. You? A chance?no way. You're just a regular firenation citizen. Not even that. You're from the southern islands where nothing exciting happens except people and their big, political opinions. Zuko. He's the firelord. You can't think of him that way. Even if he did show up on your island with aang and invited you to come with. You saving him from that battle with the political narcissist was just luck. He was caught off guard and you happened to know a couple firedbending moves. Nothing special. You're getting sidetracked. You need to focus on what he's saying.

Zuko: I mean that after the war ended, things changed for Mai and I.

Zuko looks back over to you.

Zuko: I mean, I changed. Mai was everything I wanted before the war ended. But I learned that I wanted to be good and she was fine just being on the winning side as long as it meant she was safe and she could get what she wanted.

Zuko rolls his eyes and looks away.

Y/n: but I thought she betrayed Azula to be with you?

Zuko: I think that's what it was at first, but then I found out she just wanted out of it all. But I can't do that. I'm firelord Zuko. I have my people to lead and to protect!

He suddenly stands up and turns away from you, fists clenched to his sides as he tries to calm himself down. You instinctively get up and stand behind him. You brush your hand down his arm softly. You don't want to startle him but you also want to know what's going on. But as you continue to touch his arm, it turns into a stroke down his arm.

Zuko shudders slightly under your light touch and you take you hand away.

Zuko: No, it's okay. I'm okay. That felt.. nice.

Your breath catches as butterflies attack your stomach in a sudden frenzy. You freeze.

Zuko turns toward you. His face soft, but a feeling of brokenness flashes behind his warm eyes. He lifts his hand and strokes your face like he did before. There's a zing left behind from where his fingertips brushed your cheeks.

You don't know what this is. You know you have some sort of feelings for Zuko but you don't know what he feels for you. You know that you want him though. But you need to know what's going on first. Right?

Your thoughts get continually more humble as his hand caresses down your arm. A warmth builds up in your stomach and your heart kicks up a beat.

Zuko: Mai and I haven't been together for 3 years. And there's been no one since. No one since. No one since you y/n.

Your mouth opens shocked and you close it quickly. Zuko smiles slightly and you blush again.

He steps forward, inches from you.

Zuko: I hope I haven't been reading this all wrong. Have I?

Y/n: n-n-no

Zuko: so you feel something for me?

You take a deep breath and let it out. It doesn't escape you that his face is just a short distance away. You manage to get your bearings and say with better conviction.

Y/n: yes

Zukos eyes burn and he glances down at your lips and then back up to your eyes. Almost like he's asking permission. You feel your lower stomach catch on fire as he licks his lips. You lift your shaky hand to his face and take a small step toward him. Your bodies are touching now and your whole body feels like it's up in flames.

Zuko: may I?

Y/n: yes.

He cusps your face in his hands and leans his face forward to yours.

Firebending Training Part 4

You don't know what to do. You don't know what to say. I guess it could make sense that Zukos story isn't exactly what its said to be passes mouth to mouth by the people. But what is he talking about? Is he talking about Mai or something else?

Zuko: I don't know if I should be telling you any of this. I may have already said too much but I can't help feeling like I can trust you y/n. I haven't had that in a long time.

You stay quiet because you're afraid you might push him too far. You don't want him to put his walls back up again. You want to know him and hear every secret he has, but then again, is that wrong? If he is with Mai....

Zuko interrupts your thoughts by turning around from the fire and gazing into your eyes. Those warm, orange eyes. You seem to get lost in them as Zuko studies you. After what feels like a long time has passed, he walks over to you and sits back down beside you and takes a deep breath.

Zuko: can I trust you y/n? I know it may seem like a dumb question, but I feel like I need to ask.

Y/n: I think so.

He chuckles slightly and shows his crooked smile again and you can't help but smile a little bit too. He gets serious again though.

Zuko: y/n I'm serious. I'm the firelord and sometimes with that can come secrets and putting up a false front for your people. But I don't want to lie all the time. I want there to be truth in my life. I want to make my own decisions about certain things. About life. About what I want to do. About who I want to be with.

You're not sure what he's talking about but you nod.

Y/n: im not sure what you're talking about or what you want to tell me, but you can trust me Zuko.

Zuko looks into your eyes again and you can't look away. They're so warm and deep. They feel safe. He seems to make up his mind then cause he takes another deep breath and turns away to look into the fire. By now the sun has set and darkness is swallowing up the horizon and both of you. You're not scared though, just waiting as patiently as you can for zuko to go on with what he was saying.

Zuko: Y/n, you've heard about my girlfriend Mai, obviously.

Y/n: yes?

Firebending training part 3

Zuko: what are you thinking about?

Yn: honestly. This is more than I was ever expecting.

Zuko: what do you mean?

Yn: well, you're the firelord and well..I've heard stories about you and about your girlfriend. Mai.

Zuko shifts uncomfortably and stands up. You worry that you've ruined the moment, but decide to stay still.

He slowly walks forward and you both notice the sun finish is decent down. The darkness is unforgiving and seems to add to the tension that has suddenly appeared between you.

Zuko: I'm going to grab some firewood.

You don't have a chance to say anything before he swiftly walks away back toward camp to grab wood. You are left alone with your thoughts.

How could I have been so stupid?? I've been entranced by Zuko ever since he showed up in my small town with the avatar! He's right that I don't know who he is, but I did know that he was the firelord. I also know that he is very much taken by his longtime girlfriend. What is going on?

Before you get the chance to try and think through your sudden attack for thoughts, zuko reappears and places his stack of wood onto the ground in front of where you have been sitting. He firbends a small ball of fire and lights it up. The warmth is nice and helps calm you a bit. A sly smile creeps up and you close your eyes, extending your hands to the heat of the flames.

Zuko: I'm sorry y/n. I should've told you the truth before we split up from aang. What you've heard isn't all truth.

You're taken aback by this revelation. What truth?

Firebending Training Part 2

Zuko clears his throat so he can regain your attention again.

Zuko: hey, you OK? Looks like I lost you there for a second.

You realize that you body has gone totally rigid and that you'd let go of his hand. Your fists are clenched hard at your sides. You take a deep breath to relax your muscles and look over at zuko. He's got that worried look on his face that he seems to get often. You tentatively smile, trying to lighten the mood. Her wanted to tell you something..

Yn: yeah, just reminiscing I guess. The sunset is so beautiful and..*deep breath* yeah.

Zuko doesn't respond right away, but doesn't look away as he studies your face.

Zuko: I hope I didn't make you uncomfortable bringing you over here to talk to you. It's been a long day and I can understand if you're tired. I'll leave you alone if you need me to.

Yn: no, no its fine. It's just weird being here since for so long I was stuck on that island. I don't even know who I am or what I'm supposed to do.

Zuko chuckles slightly. You glare at him teasingly and he stops, clearing his throat with a sheepish grin.

Zuko: hey! I'm sorry okay. I just... I can understand that. I wasn't always the son that planned to turn traitor to my father and run away and teach the avatar firebending. I was also second best when it came to my sister azula. Even now I'm unsure since it seems like so many people don't want me as firelord. All these attempts on my life really make me think. Maybe I'm not where I'm meant to be.

You're shocked at this sudden truth moment with Zuko. Ever since you've decided to come with Zuko, he has been guarded about what he shares with you. Always kind, but never letting down those walls he has put up with all the years of trauma and mistrust.

You take a moment to think on what be has told you and then remember that he took your hand earlier and lead you here to the water. You blush and try to hide it, but zuko sees the sudden warmth in your cheeks.

You cough slightly in an attempt to distract him.

Yn: I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you..I don't know. I guess I never really thought about everything you've must've gone through. I'm just some girl who...I don't know. Showed up I guess.

Zuko: you're not just some girl. I promise.

Zuko reaches out again and takes both of your hands in his. You're not sure what to do so you stay where you are, seeing what's going to happen next.

Zuko: when aang and I decided to leave the firenation and travel south for..something to find an answer to my problem, we were surprised to find you. I know I'm not making sense but ever since we got into that battle with resistance against me down there, I can't help but see that... you saved me y/n.

Yn: wait. Me. Saved you?

Zuko: yeah. It reminded me of when I fought my sister for the throne during the comet and Katara healed me.

Zuko takes one of his back and puts it to his stomach.

Zuko: that day changed everything. But it was different when I met you. You didn't even know me and yet, you did everything you could to make sure I made it out alive.

Yn: i...I... don't know what to say.

He waits for you to think about what he said. Then ,with the hand he placed on his stomach, he strokes the right side of your face softly. Again, you notice how warm it is.

By now, the sun is almost down and the red dance is slowing down around you.

Zuko: y/n , I know one of your reasons for coming with me is so I can teach you firebending. We've been alone ever since but we've never really talked since.

You can't help but agree silently. You know there is more than just firebending training between you, but you don't know what to do about it.
