“Hey you know me, I might be tha kinda ta believe in fairies, Miss Iris” The tiny blonde grinned at her. The slave could tell something was off about her Covaire favorite and it made her fill with concern for the one she’d desired for weeks. “Ya been okay? Like, REALLY okay?” she asked bluntly, noting how Iris could easily touch her and yet chose not to- that certainly hadn’t been a problem for them before, especially when it came to sex. Alexis trying to think of anything but slipping down between the Mistress’s legs, if anything her heartbeat probably gave her thoughts away. “Always, seems everyone’s too busy ta just stay for longer than five minutes, at least in my life it seems” Alexis agreed, she had guessed the statement was rhetorical- but she’d say anything just to speak with the vampire. “Now you know I wouldn’t refuse and pass up such an offer, Lets just say I enjoy you too much..” The slave had wanted to see Rajani too, the panther having been so docile in its compulsion that Alexis had just been laying beside the cat on the floor when Iris had attended to her own business during a rental- Alexis not knowing the pet was no longer there.
The vampire's eyes narrowed and tightened at the corners when the slave made her inquiry. She considered telling her the truth, considered that the slave might want some insight into Iris' depressions and fits of hysteria. But when a vampire lost control, the entire world suffered. It would be best if Alexis was never privy to one of those outbursts. "Yes, pet, I'm really fine. I have a few new additions to the home." Iris wasn't a dog person by any means but she'd liked Makayla and when Jackson returned her, Iris offered to watch after the dogs they shared until Mak was claimed again. Perhaps she could rent both girls to keep each other company and keep the dogs occupied.
Iris motioned to the guard standing nearby to release the slave from the cell.

The vampire knew her words had struck an uncomfortable chord in him, but she was attempting to search deep into his mind. There was something else in the cards as she turned the second over. “Your sire, a woman..” She closed her eyes to think on her. “You trusted her–but you don’t remember a thing about your life before her. You don’t find that somewhat odd?” She didn’t bother turning over any cards. The spirits were telling her what to do. “She got rid of everything you loved, this mistress.”
These were personal details, and accurate. He did not believe she learned them from anywhere outside the room in which they were sitting, and this lent authenticity to her ability; she was genuine – he could feel it, somehow, in the air between them. It reeled him in, both fascination and an innate drawing towards all that was supernatural. He rested his arms on top of the table, leaning forward and watching as her eyes moved behind closed lids. “Not odd at all. It was our clan’s way to remove human memories, so that we would become strong vampires. If I loved, it was through human folly – she found me worthy and set me free.” He was resolute, voicing doctrines long-ingrained into his mind. Cold fingers extended, brushing over the next card as his eyes remained fixed on hers. “What more do you see?”
Iris should have stopped the charade there, pretended it all had only been a fluke, but now, with his hard eyes on her so earnestly, it was difficult to keep herself from burrowing further into his questions. Her fingertips hovered over the cards as she turned another. The lovers. Her hands knew the different tips of the cards by now; there was no trickery there. Her mouth moved, the words flowed, and there was nothing she could do to stop it. “You take liberties with your slave, liberties that the King would punish you should he ever find out.” She didn’t open her eyes to look at him as the card throbbed white hot underneath her palm. “You play house. You play husband.”
Her words then were soft as they caressed the word ‘husband’. She’d had one once, she thought, but he was only a shadowy, distant memory and a face she had long forgotten.. but she was certain if she encountered it again she would know him immediately. It was a constant oxymoron. Her hands shuddered for a moment before dropping onto the table in front of them. At last, she opened her eyes to look at him, expectantly.

The dark little sumptuous queen swept down the wet black roads of the city. She avoided her usual haunts, preferring instead to glide along the dimly lit street corridors with their knobbly stones. Her feet were certain even though she didn’t yet know where she was going. The city was awake, singing softly for her to come and join the rest of them as they bent and swayed in ecstasy. Suddenly, as if a personal invitation was dropped in front of her, Alexander appeared.
Iris recalled their time by the pool fondly, how she had walked through his lavish home, touching everything her fingers came in contact with. Somehow he looked different: older. But it was impossible; vampires never aged, did they? Maybe she was sinking further and further into the abyss of mental illness. Marijuana clung to him like earthy cologne and Iris basked in it. "Of course, I’ve been away for a bit,” she said. The lie was effortless, and she knew Alex was one of the few people who’d see right through it. “So what’s all this I hear about a new business of yours? Could a gal get an invitation?”

Iris had been watching Effy from a respectful distance. Their relationship, though small, had been chipped away sliver by sliver over the past few months. Once upon a time, there had been brunches and sleepovers and threesomes planned, but now the vampire was watching the other one like a creep. Iris had poor people skills and they had somewhat deteriorated even further. It had been a long time since Gage died, a long time since Ethan left, since Enyo left, since Dias left. The vampire was lonely.
“I don’t know, perhaps,” Iris replied with a sad little smile. “Have you been doing well, Effy? It’s been awhile.”
Effy had been too distracted by her phone call to realize who was watching her or who grew close. The voice on the phone was a familiar and welcoming one, a tug at her heartstrings that made her yearn to go back to France. It wasn’t until she had hung up that she turned her attention to whoever her company was. Seeing Iris her face transformed from longing to a bright smile, surprised to see her friend out and about once more.
“Remind me of your name gorgeous, I fear I may have forgotten.” She teased before leaning in and pressing a kiss to Iris’s cheek. “It’s good to see you after so long.”
“Oh, you, always with the jokes.” Iris smiled again, worrying her lip between her teeth. She hadn’t seen hide nor hair of Leda and wondered silently if perhaps there was trouble in paradise. Things had always fallen into a strange groove. Iris darted her tongue out to moisten her lip as Effy leaned in close for a chaste embrace. Iris gave the other vampire a little squeeze. “I just wanted to apologise for my behaviour the past few months.” She didn’t want to explain everything going on in her head; the longer she kept away from the vampire clan, the better. She was certain they were looking for. . “But I think I still owe you brunch? Would you like to come over today?”

Long time no see // Closed: Alexis and Iris
Alexis was like a puppy that had seen it’s Master return from work after hours, excited, eyes bright and bouncing around. The tiny slave only grinned more at Iris “I can’t help it, not all that much to do in here, y’know…” Alexis mused, resting her forehead against the cool iron of the bars, watching the porcelain Goddess before her, taking in every perfect feature she held, her eyes were like sapphires and her lips were blood red rose petals, all finished off with the perfect crisp complexion. “I was indeed, I mean they let me have bubblegum” she mused, then tilting her head, wondering if Iris had had a hand in the slave not getting beatings off guards and the little amenities she had received “Though I’m thinking you already knew tha answer to that question?” she smirked “I just worried you’d gone and left me, lotta people leave me, often without saying goodbye.”
With a coy smile, Iris shrugged her slender shoulders. “Perhaps a fairy was looking out for you.” She leaned against the bars, close enough to reach out and touch the spunky little darling if she so chose. But Iris kept her hands to herself. The vampire had allowed herself to waste away while she lay in her hiding place. Without Rajani,her house was empty, too empty. Recently, though, she had added three new tenants: an odd trio of dogs from a Master leaving Covaire. Iris didn’t know much about the man other than he had a slave and that he was leaving the city, and that the dogs didn’t have a place to stay. She took them primarily to keep herself occupied. Juno, Major, and Sadie.
“People do leave, don’t they?” Iris inquired. “They leave you when you wish they would stay, and they stay when you have no need of them.” The question was rhetorical and pain hid behind her smile. “What do you say to you coming to visit me?”

Iris chose all of her words carefully. She was afraid of incurring the wrath of some of the authorities around the City. So far she had been careful, so god damned careful, not to reveal her past or anything about herself before arriving in the City. It was a miracle that nobody had thought to go looking for Thain or Balthazar. Or perhaps that’s just the way she’d wanted it and the cosmos agreed. Iris wouldn’t complain.
The vampire gave the other a quick shake before dropping her hand to her side. Her feline, green eyes lighted on the exotic bird. People had given her such strange looks when she’d had Rajani on a leash in public, but now the leopard was gone. Staring at the magnificent creature, she found herself missing her pet. It was an odd thing, watching the majesty of the bird settle into domestication with a single shudder of its wings. “I assure you,” Iris began, with a sharp little smile, “that I am no competition.” But then Lynn was talking about food, the way it turned to ash, the empty taste it offered, and Iris felt her chest burn. Although she might not have been able to appreciate it, she did so love cheesecake.
“I may be one of the few who doesn’t mind some of the human food, but yes, I can arrange for a more fulfilling course if you are so inclined. Who’s this handsome fellow?” She gestured towards the bird with a slender hand.

“If you know nothing of the storms here then I should presume that your residence in the City has only just begun. We face hardships from those who seek to destroy us. Hunters.” Her eyes skated up and down his hulking figure as he grew closer to her. He was brave for someone so new. Iris was always impressed, though, with the young, handsome men who hung around the city. They were pleasant to look at, pleasant to smell. Pleasant to eat. She didn’t bat so much as an eyelash as he planted himself uncomfortably close to her. The vampire was so still one might mistake her for a corpse. “Strength and fangs I possess, old world magick, old world knowledge.” Another little amused tilt of her head: “A vampire does things a wolf cannot dream of. Perhaps the wolf is sturdier in combat but a vampire fights with her mind.”
Iris reached into her handbag to rub the tips of her fingers along the cards there. “You do not bring the storms unless you control the weather and that’s something new I’ve never heard of.” She inclined her chin to look him boldly in the eye. “And do you control the weather now?”

Iris smelled him before she saw him; it seemed to be a theme with the wolves of Covaire, but something about his scent made her knees nearly buckle. He smelled so god damned familiar, something distinctly familiar and heavy, like dark red blood and a strong heartbeat and something like a man she knew a long time ago. Her smile never wavered, though, when she turned to face him. The stench of tobacco lingered after him in a cloud but the smell of his blood was stronger than that of the smoke in his lungs. “I’m alive--more or less. After the storms we’ve been weathering in the city, I would think it would be enough to be alive.” She tilted her head to the side, feline eyes regarding him sharply. “You’re a long way from the wolves of the city,” Iris observed. He was handsome in a way that made her veins crawl with a sleepy, dark desire.

Their interactions had always been a bit strange, considering his preferences and considering hers. She pushed a dark curl back from her forehead, regarding him with those same, disinterested eyes. There had been times when he had been in her home where she had made him scream without laying a hand on him. She wondered vaguely if he remembered any of that. But the nightmarish things she subjected him to would be difficult to erase entirely. “I’m well. Coming back from a sabbatical,” she answered, her tone blase, as if she had simply gone to France for a vacation. But no, she had spent it in the darkness, wrestling the demons in her head. “How long have you been back in the Chateau?”

Iris hadn't paid much attention to the blossoming community around her. Vampires came and went as often as the seasons. Iris had grown accustomed to not getting attached to anybody. It was just easier that way. Her home, during her stasis, had been well maintained. The gardens were merry, the outside was flawless, tucked into the shadows of the high trees. Her widow’s walk remained empty except in the event of a storm where she roused herself and climbed as high as she dared to sit in the screaming rain.
Most vampires in the area were younger when they’d been turned. This woman appeared to be older and Iris found that refreshing. She stopped short when the woman called out to her. “I am, yes. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” She reached out a long, slender hand for the woman to shake. Her eyes wandered to the home indicated. “What a lovely residence,” she remarked. “I’d love to have you over for dinner one evening. It gets quite lonely there and I do so enjoy getting to know the people of the city.”

Alexis had been busying herself aiming to stand on her head in her cell, others would have told her that she would break her neck, but the little slave didn’t care about what others had to say on such a matter. It was then that Alexis perked when she heard a voice and familiar heels on the floor, the blonde immediately falling and scratting on the floor until she got to her feet, coming over to the bars, sapphire eyes bright at the sight she had been hoping for over the past few weeks “Was really starting to think I’d imagined you, Miss Iris…” Alexis mused.

As soon as the dreadful butterfly unfurled her wings from her dusty coccoon she sought out her sweet little candy truffle tucked away in the Chateau. She’d set aside a certain amount of money for amenities for the slave to make sure that she was healthy when Iris arrived again and to see that Alexis would have access to anything she needed. Iris caught the last flop as the slave settled down. "Every time I see you, you’re doing something ridiculous,” Iris said, casually looking through the bars of the cell. Her eyes tightened a little. "I do apologize for abandoning you, darling. I'm back now. I had business to attend to. Were you well taken care of in my absence?"

She arrives from her darkness as if she has been merely a timepiece covered by a cloth. The vampire, withering and paper white, shakes the dust from her hair and her shoulders, admires the strong slope of the furniture of her mansion. Her beloved pet is far away for now, taken by some wildlife sanctuary, and the gardens in her absence have flourished. Roses and thick stemmed tulips bend their heads over musical fountains and the willowy figure dressed all in black admires them from her window. The Queen has returned.
Iris slides into the flaming white light, shaded by the wide arms of a leather umbrella. She is poise and grace and long legs as she carries herself through the city with a swing of her hips, with a crisp clip of her high heels. She’s smiling, something that looks good on her, something that looks natural on her.

Iris furrowed her brows at Henry. There he was, still exactly where she’d left him, looking like he’d barely aged. But it had only been a few months, hadn’t it? She didn’t know--time for the vampire meant very little. Although it was warm spring, she still wore her long, dark dresses with the sleeves tightly buttoned at her wrists. “You’re still here,” she said to his blank face on the other side of the bars, plucking her lip between her teeth.
