His humour brought her sadness, and a bit of embarrassment… She hadn’t meant to make what he was feeling sound so mundane. However, what was said was said.

“Sorry... That came out.. harsh.” He ran his hands through his hair, everything was the same, yet nothing would ever be the same again and he wsn’t sure how to deal with the information. 

“I wasn’t trying to attack you.”

“Because everyone, here and in your District… They glamorize it. And Victors seldom talk about it… They aren’t supposed to be messed up.” Aridane’s brows furrowed as she thought of all the lives ruined by these games.

Without much warning, he laughed, an actual laugh... though one that contained the same tone that often came before tears, though his eyes were dry. 

“I never wanted any of this. Confusing... considering I literally signed up for it.” He shrugged. “I just wanted to be a Blacksmith.”

His words felt so familiar. It was a common phenomenon among the Victors, that never truly went away. Despite her hopes, it seemed that Flint would suffer the same thing. “It’s common to feel that way after the game…”

The sixteen year old let out a laugh that contained very little humour. Taking a breath he did his best to give her a smile. “Well, that’s good to know. At least I’m not completely loosing my mind. I’m just as normal as everyone else who spent weeks killing children to survive. Normal!”
