Was gonna do a watchparty of 80s animated kids tv shows list for next year but then I find out that there is no good list for animated kids tv shows at all!

we need to fix this. I am gonna legit make a list right here on this post and if you think of one I will add it as long as I can find evidence of its existence and prove it is from the 80s when it was first broadcast. Here's the ones I can think of so far for numbers and the letter A. Will arrange in alphabetical order better later. and yes Anime counts!

Make Mine Music post watch comments

The collection is barely tied together so I don't think it really should be seen as a related set. It is just 10 merry melodies together really, all with a musical theme. My favs were the more comedic ones as they had more of a story to engage with and I feel like Disney was at their best when doing silly little stories like these at least at this time.

Of course, my fav is the whale one. It is the most remembered one for a reason. It had amazing singing, a great story and animation. No really, that was all done by one guy?! OMG! He has ridiculous talent!

The hat one was cute but a bit too predictable for Disney at this point and so ends up a little boring which is a shame. I still like it, just not as much as others.

The country song one at the start and the baseball one were fun and some of my favs disregarding the whale one. I liked the style of story telling done in them with it being illustrated as the song described and it stopped and started so both would be together without one running away without the other.

Peter and the Wolf is of course a classic. Anything is amazing with Winnie the Pooh's voice actor in it lol X3 But I did love how they used music in this so much more than other attempts they made. The only gripe I have with that one was how long it took to get started. I'm not sure we needed that long to explain that the characters were represented by instruments. I think that is a pretty easy concept to grasp but then again its potentially for kids so maybe I'm wrong. What do you think? Also, if it was for kids why did you add several jumpscares Disney?! lol They wanted the kids to piss themselves.

The other ones which I haven't mentioned yet just didn't interest me much. They were ok but kinda boring. Well except the personified instruments one. That one I quite liked but it felt like what I expected to be in Fantasia rather than this.

Extra Notes

This movie was made as a way to share a bunch of half finished stories which were left up in the air due to World War II taking most of the Disney staff for other war related means at the time. Disney was struggling financially so they needed to recoup their loses any way they could.

Facts

The "The Martins and the Coys" segment was later censored from the film's US video release due to objections to the film's depiction of gun violence.

The "Blue Bayou" segment was originally intended for Fantasia using the Claude Debussy musical composition Clair de Lune from Suite bergamasque (conducted by Leopold Stokowski)

The "All Cats Join in" segment This features some mild female nudity that was edited out in both the US and UK DVD releases, although the film's Japanese home video releases features it intact and uncensored.

The Three Caballeros - post watch comments

Yep this was fun. Longer than it needed to be and had a lot of filler which was just footage of dancing but overall I enjoyed it.

The first third or so was like an extension of Saludos Amigos with a bit more educational stuff. I totally forgot about that dang pink bird meme until now omg. But it did feel kinda slapped in and Donald wasn't much involved so it could have been done better.

Then there came this real long section of just dancing with the live action and animation mix effects showing off and nothing else which is cool but got old eventually and it went on too long. I understand the critics comments of "all effects, no substance" now. It's nice seeing exotic dances but it isn't what you come to Disney for.

I do have to say tho, I feel its unfair how this movie does every special effect possible with the live action and animation together thing and this is the first time this has been done and yet this movie got no recognition for it! Yep! NONE! This movie didn't win any awards and wasn't even nominated for anything special effects related which seems like a crime to me! Mary Poppins got awards for literally the same effects but done worse! I'm angry!

Somewhere in the middle we get introduced to the Mexican bird character and oh sign of the times, those guns oof! Watch where you are firing those omg! 0_0 Also this part is probably the most well known scene which is the three caballeros song and for good reason. This is probably one of the best scenes if not the best in the whole thing and clearly was the inspiration I think for the thing as a whole. It does feel like it kinda comes out of nowhere tho and doesn't relate to the rest that well. I get the feeling this was made first and the rest around it and it shows too much.

Then we go back to being introduced to stuff but this time its about Mexico and even more dancing lol ok its getting silly at this point. But with that said, it is nice learning some more stuff about a new place rather than treading on the same stuff as Saludos Amigos although it is kinda similar in some ways.

Then the movie goes off its meds in the last 10mins like seriously WTF is going on lmao! XD Donald is so horny throughout this but he just goes insane in the end and so does the animation. It's the pink elephant scene all over again but somehow worse! It is enjoyable in a crazy way but just what a way to end it. They didn't know how to end this did they?

That was my thoughts on the different sections but I would love to hear other peoples opinions on this coz this is kinda a mixed bag of mess. This really feels like the movie equivalent of a party bag you get at a friends party which is good in some ways and bad in others. Some cheap crap but heh its still candy so its good, some good stuff and then erm ok I wasn't expecting that one. It's cool but I don't think I want it again. XD I ended up feeling tired at the end like I actually went on a bender -v-'

This movie had some controversy at the time due to Donald Duck fawning over a real human woman in the film

This film celebrates Donald Duck's 10th Anniversary

2 characters are featured other than Donald. José Carioca returns from his origins in Saludos Amigos and a new companion, the pistol-toting rooster Panchito Pistoles.

This movie was one of the first to blend live action with animation

Victory Through Air Power - post watching comments

Well it is not made for entertainment so there isn't much to say but I can certainly see why this was effective in the war effort. For Disney's first attempt at something like this, they certainly did a good job at making the message clear and understandable for anyone. Even I could understand it lol -v-'

The ending just made me laugh tho. That was a bit much XD If you haven't seen it and have any interest in American history I recommend it as it is a fascinating watch. It stays a little longer than it should near the end I think tho.

This movie was made very quickly as Disney had read the book and felt it was an important message to get out to the people. This movie ended up having a big impact on the war and even inspired people like Churchill to change their policies. Unfortunately, though this started as well intentioned, this brought perhaps too much attention to Disney and their potential for sending war propaganda messages. This movie also inspired the government to use Disney from here on to make war propaganda for several years. Disney even made shorts to train army soldiers. This includes some of the most now controversial shorts Disney has ever made and marks a dark time in DIsney's history.

Critical Reception and Box Office Success: This movie barely recouped the budget but that wasn't the point. This movie was made to send a message and it made a huge impact on the war.

Facts

Walt Disney read Victory through Air Power and felt that its message was so important that he personally financed the animated production of the book

After Disney's main distributor at the time RKO Radio Pictures refused to release the film in theaters, Walt decided to have United Artists (the distributor of many of his shorts between 1932 and 1937) release it instead, making it the first and only Disney animated feature to be released by a different film studio other than RKO or Walt Disney Studios.

The film played a significant role for the Disney Corporation because it was the true beginning of educational films. The educational films would be, and still are, continually produced and used for the military, schools, and factory instruction. The company learned how to effectively communicate their ideas and efficiently produce the films while introducing the Disney characters to millions of people worldwide.

One scene showed a fictional rocket bomb destroying a fortified German submarine pen. According to anecdote, this directly inspired the British to develop a real rocket bomb to attack targets that were heavily protected with thick concrete. Due to its origin, the weapon became known as the Disney bomb, and saw limited use as a bunker buster before the war ended.

Saludos Amigos post watch comments

Despite this being made for government propaganda reasons, this is actually a nice little documentary about Latin America. I learned a lot and that last animation was a very sweet ode to Brazil.

I'm not really sure what the controversy about the Pedro short is about. It just seems like they intended a cute child character. I think any offense was unintentional in this case but I'm not from Latin America so maybe there are cultural undertones I'm not picking up on. If anyone can fill me in on that I would appreciate it :3

I find it funny how American's at this time found llamas so baffling since they didn't always listen to commands. An animal with a backbone?! XD

The goofy animation was strangely educational. They really tried to pack a lot of what they learned into this. It shows just how passionate they are to represent them well which is sweet. The whole thing did feel like a holiday and was real wholesome.

My fav part by far is the last bit which I think works better as a respectful music accompaniment than any of the fantasia shorts XD The parrot is adorable and I love him. I want to know more about the stories he is associated with and what inspired the character. I feel like that was brushed over a little too fast. It's only 40mins and I ended up wanting more but that is a good sign in the end.

Overall, a sweet little documentary and I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. A lot of people seem to know about The Three Calleberos but not about this one as much. Would love to know people's opinions if anyone has seen this :3

Bambi post watching comments

Well sorry if you love this movie coz you might wanna not read this coz I kinda hate this movie and I'm gonna rant about it for a bit.

I understand the reputation it had at the time but I don't understand why people still call it a classic. There are multiple things not done well in this movie. No.1 being Bambi themself. He has the personality of a goddamn brick. The death of his mum doesn't impact me like it should coz he doesn't sound distraught like he does in earlier scenes in the meadow but just confused and we have a second of tears before we move on. Of course, this is baring in mind I am from a different era which has to be taken into account. It was much more shocking at the time, I know. But people still act like this is the saddest thing ever and I'm sorry it just isn't.

Dumbo portrayed the love of a mother and baby so much better than this movie did and that came before this with the same run time so there isn't much excuse. Speaking of run time. Nothing happens in this movie! Pinoccio and Dumbo had so much more to them but this is mostly filler. Then the growing up part which is meant to be the whole point of the movie just happens in one transition. Welp I guess he's an adult now. Let's not focus on any of the relationship of him and his dad with the mum gone oh no.

You know there is a problem when the side character Thumper has more personality than the main character. I wish the movie was about them! Of course the songs are nice and the backgrounds are gorgeous but this is par for the course for Disney now. They could have done so much better with this but they didn't.

Yeah, this movie just disappoints me. If you like it that's fine. I'm not judging you but damn do I not like this movie personally.

Saludos Amigos - 1942

Extra Notes

This is the start of a series of low effort anthologies Disney made to recoup loses due to having to make propaganda for the World War II effort. This means a lot of these next bunch of movies will be reused animated shorts which were already released at this point. This movie in particular was made as propaganda to support the Good Neighbor Policy.

Basic Info

Titles: Saludos Amigos (Spanish for "Greetings, Friends" or "Hello, Friends" as said in the official promotional poster)

Movie medium: Hand Drawn Animation and live action segments

Movie Genre: anthology (compilation), comedy, documentary

Source Material: Set in Latin America and travels across multiple countries to represent them in a sort of Disney themed country tour. The film features segments of 5 countries in South America: Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, and Brazil. Each country has its own segment except for Bolivia and Peru, because both countries are represented in the Lake Titicaca segment.

Date first released: 24th August 1942 (Rio de Janeiro) - 6th Feb 1943 (Boston) - 19th Feb 1943 (United States)

Critical Reception and Box Office Success: Not much info on the critical reception at the time but it was considered a success and nowadays it is considered an underappreciated classic.

Facts

A tour of Latin America was funded by the government to use Disney as an ambassador for the the Good Neighbor Policy since Disney characters were popular in Latin America. It was intended this tour would become this movie. The tour, facilitated by Nelson Rockefeller, who had recently been appointed as Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs (CIAA), took Disney and a group of roughly twenty composers, artists, technicians, etc. from his studio to South America, mainly to Brazil and Argentina, but also to Chile, Bolivia and Peru.

The film itself was given federal loan guarantees since Disney was struggling with the lack of sales due to the war and the Disney animators strike at the time

The film included live-action documentary sequences featuring footage of modern Latin American cities with skyscrapers and fashionably dressed residents. It surprised many contemporary US viewers, who associated such images only with US and European cities, and contributed to a changing impression of Latin America. Film historian Alfred Charles Richard Jr. has commented that Saludos Amigos "did more to cement a community of interest between peoples of the Americas in a few months than the State Department had in fifty years."

The film also inspired Chilean cartoonist René Ríos Boettiger to create Condorito, one of Latin America's most ubiquitous cartoon characters. Ríos perceived that the character Pedro, a small, incapable airplane, was a slight to Chileans and created a comic that could supposedly rival Disney's comic characters.

The success of this movie helped launch the international popularity of Donald Duck and leading Disney to produce The Three Caballeros, another government-funded film aimed at Latin American goodwill.

Critical Reception and Box Office Success: Critical reception at the time was mixed with many complaining of the lack of fantasy and calling it not Disney-like. It earned a decent amount at the box office but not as much as hoped due to lack of access to European markets during World War II

Facts

This was the first movie by Disney to debut abroad

The death of Bambi's mother in this film was at the time and is to this day considered one of the darkest and most shocking moments in Disney history

Facing financial difficulty, Disney was forced to cut 12 minutes from the film before final animation to save production costs.

Dumbo post watching comments

This is one of my fav Disney movies and still is to this day after a re-watch. It is just such a heartwarming and complete satisfying story. Cute animals, great animation, great songs and revenge in the end? What is there not to love? I can't get enough of it XD

Personally, I don't see the crows as racist as others do I think. Knowing Disney they probably meant it to be racist but in the context of the movie and scene on its own, I don't think its so bad. In fact, it is one of the only black roles which Disney showed the characters in a nice light in the end so I think that deserves some thought. The fact they decided to redeem them in the story is actually quite progressive for the time. Also they are my fav song and characters in the movie tbh lol X3

The scene and song about roustabouts is not so good tho. Glad its still there for historical relevance reasons but oof. Also the whole fact they are an animal circus which is now illegal for good reasons also makes me a bit sad but again its a history thing.

I kinda wish the other elephants got MORE comeuppance for what they did but maybe that's just me. Also still WTF is up with the pink elephants scene? I still don't understand why that's there lol but I also kinda love it

Critical Reception and Box Office Success: Critical reception was great at the time of release and still is to this day. It did well at the box office as well but perhaps not as well as it could have done since World War II was coming

At the time of this movie's release, Pinocchio and Fantasia were not giving Disney good sales so this movie was made on a budget to recoup the loses and ended up saving the company

Despite still being a fan favourite, in the years since its release there has been controversy due to the racial stereotypes depicted in a few scenes. These are essential to the story tho and cannot be removed so they remain unedited

Won Academy Award for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture In 2017 and Best Animation Design at Cannes Film Festival in 1947

RKO initially didn't like the film's 64-minute length and asked Disney to add another ten minutes. Disney refused saying "No, that's as far as I can stretch it. You can stretch a thing so far and then it won't hold. The picture is right as it is. And another ten minutes is liable to cost five hundred thousand dollars. I can't afford it."

Production was interrupted on May 29, 1941, when a significant portion of the Disney animation staff initiated a strike;. Despite feeling sympathy for the striker's, Kimball continued to work on the film. Some have interpreted the scene where the clowns' discuss requesting to get a raise from their boss being a reference to the Disney animators strike, demanding higher pay from Walt himself. Animator and strike organizer Art Babbitt denied this, saying he had been assigned to animate the sequence before the strike
