Was gonna do a watchparty of 80s animated kids tv shows list for next year but then I find out that there is no good list for animated kids tv shows at all!

we need to fix this. I am gonna legit make a list right here on this post and if you think of one I will add it as long as I can find evidence of its existence and prove it is from the 80s when it was first broadcast. Here's the ones I can think of so far for numbers and the letter A. Will arrange in alphabetical order better later. and yes Anime counts!

Critical Reception and Box Office Success: The budget is unknown but it earned a lot at the box office not just on original launch but re-releases to. Critical reception was mostly great but some still criticised it, calling it good for kids but not much for adults.

Facts

Tommy Kirk later said "Fess Parker, at that time, was on the outs with Disney—I presume over money. This was simply his last contractual obligation and he only worked about three days on this film, but good, competent, professional that he is, he came in and did it. I think he helps the movie a lot. l liked Fess Parker very much; he was very nice to me."

The movie become the fifth highest-grossing film of 1957

The film was adapted into a 1957 comic book published by Dell Comics. It was issue #869 of Four Color comic series and was reprinted in 1965. In 1959 Japan also released a comic adaption, drawn by Leiji Matsumoto which is considered very rare nowadays.

Zorro - 1957

Critical Reception and Box Office Success: There isn't any info about critical reception but this show was very popular and got good ratings at the time.

Facts

The shows theme song (written by Norman Foster and George Bruns and first recorded by the Mellomen) was a hit recording for The Chordettes, peaking at number 17 on the Hit Parade.

Children inspired by the series produced "Z" graffiti on school desks and walls across the United States.

Despite good ratings (number 30 in season 1 with a 26.6 rating), the series ended after two seasons due to a financial dispute between Disney and the network over ownership of Zorro, Mickey Mouse Club, and the Disney anthology television series (at the time titled Disneyland).

Reruns of the series aired on the Disney Channel starting the day the channel launched in 1983 and these continued until 2002.

Williams (Zorro) and other key cast members made a number of live appearances at Disneyland in 1958. Some of their shows involved Zorro and Monastario battling each other on the rooftops of Frontierland.

Old Yeller - Post watching comments

Well this one is a classic for a reason. I procrastinated on watching it and if you know the infamous scene then you know why. ;^; Major spoilers going into this one so PLEASE watch this if you are at all interested first. Bare in mind, it does have some offensive stereotypes and animal abuse in it so BE WARNED before you watch.

The basic plot of this movie is a slice of life tale about living in the country in America back then and of course having a cheeky dog called Old Yeller (Yellow with an accent). Don't read this review if you don't want spoilers coz yes we gotta discuss THAT but for now let's chat about other things.

Now I know the previous slice of life country movies didn't hit well just because they weren't so good coz this movie does a much better job at showing the old country way of life. If you wanna know what it was like back in the old days of Western America then this shows it well with a good story to boot.

I also like how the kids are done in this movie. Their emotions make a lot of sense for kids and the acting is great, especially the older kid. The younger kid is annoying at times but only in a way that makes sense for a younger child and he doesn't get too unbearable I think. I have seen plenty of movies do kids that age terrible so its good to see better representation here.

One thing I do have to mention (sorry Dorothy McGuire fans but...) I hate her smile. She's a great actor otherwise but whenever she smiles its such an awkward toothy grin it just doesn't feel right to me and put me off for the first half of the movie unfortunately. I don't hate her and I don't think its her fault don't get me wrong but it really bothered me for some reason. I'm curious if anyone else feels the same way?

Also there were some kinda shocking scenes which are a bit jarring if you don't know about movies from this era so be warned. The scene where the older boy got dragged by the mule near the start of the movie caught me off guard a bit coz of how fast and violent it was for what should have been just a silly scene. It's obviously a dummy and not the actor but the switch was surprisingly fast and well done so it took me a sec to notice so it gave me the jump a bit. -v-'

There are also plenty of other action scenes which if you like animals...are...rough. Yeah, this is a sign of the times. Animals didn't get treated well in cinema back then and often got treated like dolls for entertainment and this movie exemplifies this all too much. You can tell that probably plenty of animals got hurt when making this movie even possibly including the dog. I swear some of these scenes are real dog hunting footage as well. So be warned, if you are sensitive to that stuff, don't watch this. I felt so bad for some of these poor creatures <:C

There is also quite a few offensive moments which are very outdated today such as, references to violent Indians and a lot of sexist talk. To be fair, the movie does make a point of specifying that a real man would help directly whenever he can and not make excuses for others to do their work while they sit and eat. I do like that they did that coz this is pretty progressive for the time and helps a bit with all the sexism but, unfortunately, there are still some moments which don't age so well anyways.

Well yes, now we gotta get to THE SCENE this movie is known for. In case you don't know (seriously, you should watch the movie first before learning about this for the best experience but you can read on if you want to), this movie is famous for a very sad scene where the dog goes to heaven by the boys own hands coz he gets a serious illness they can't cure which turns him rabid. And yes indeed I did cry.

What's funny about this scene (not haha funny of course) is that, if you remember the beginning of the movie, the dad says he is going to be gone for several months and he comes back exactly after this sad scene happens. This means this all happened over only a few months or so. What a crazy rollercoaster of a time dang! It's amazing how well the movie portrays the characters slow growing love for the dog in such a short amount of time so you really feel it when the sad moment comes. The pacing is done really well in this movie for sure. It did make me laugh when they played Old Yeller's theme song after the scene tho. A real Bambi moment -v-'

There is one moment I don't quite understand so maybe you guys can help me. The scene after the boy and dog get attacked by the pigs and the young girl brings Old Yeller's puppy, the young girl gets upset when he doesn't accept the puppy and I'm not sure why. Was she upset because it was a gift and she thinks he doesn't like her? Was she upset because she thought Old Yeller would die and he was in denial coz the dog was fine at that point so that doesn't make much sense. Someone please explain this coz this kinda feels like it comes outta nowhere. Especially, if she is meant to be a love interest coz she is literally only in one other scene before this so there is not much indication they are meant to be an item.

Honestly, I don't even know what she is even in this movie for. She's kinda pointless as a character except for her important exposition dump about Old Yeller stealing and her being mentioned as the fat lazy guys work horse for the message about real men. Then she is kinda just there for some reason when the sad scene with the dog happens and I don't even know why. Am I missing something? Please let me know.

Then there is the ending which is done surprisingly well for how abrupt it is and I guess that is probably to do with the amazing acting work of Fess Parker as always. It's kinda weird how the families dad leaves at the start of the movie and then just turns up at the end to give the "sometimes life is hard" talk to his son even tho he has absolutely no context to anything he is talking about because he wasn't there for the entirety of Old Yeller's adoption! I think they could have at least let the dad know about the dog being adopted just before he left or something. It comes off as pretty haphazard.

After reading about it, apparently there may have been a reason for that as supposedly Fess Parker was nearing the end of his contract with Disney at this time so this might be why. I hope no-one came to watch the movie coz he stars in it tho coz they got hella cheated out of tickets -v-'.

Another thing I don't understand is why the younger kid doesn't get upset when the dog is gone. He just climbing a haypile like nothing happened while they are literally burying him. He was attacking people with rocks for taking the dog before. I'm confused. wha?! Oh also when that sad scene happens the older boy says "he's my dog so I'll do it" which is a famous line but we already established throughout the whole movie it was the younger boys dog. erm...wha?

Wow this review ended up being longer than I thought but there is quite a lot to talk about with this one I guess. Overall, I highly recommend it as it is a classic and a good example of a Western American movie of this era. However, you do have to be aware of the offensive stereotypes and animal abuse which is involved. But enough about me, what did you guys think?

Zorro 1957 TV series S1E1 - Post watching comments

It was surprisingly difficult finding this to watch. Most shows, especially ones this significant and old, have at least the first episode archived and available for free even from official sources but this time. It actually was the other way round! Yes, every episode EXCEPT the first one was available easily. I don't know what's going on with that but it didn't seem fair so I did a bit of sleuthing to find this. Tbf it was available in worse quality but it took some finding to get it without weird editing or really bad quality. But I found it in the end ^w^

Yeah this is pretty much what I expected it to be and that's not a bad thing. It's classic action and humour in a style which reminds me of a mix of Batman and Indiana Jones.

The action is certainly fun and we know Disney can do that with the movies they have made so far. Of course acting is good to especially with good old Guy Williams doing a great job as the main character. I can see why this would be a big thing for kids back in the day. Very iconic.

I chose to watch the first episode as I wanted to know the origins of Zorro and why he became Zorro (as I kinda heard what he was in general before coming in) and luckily those questions were answered here quite well without any silly cliffhangers to keep me waiting to know from more episodes.

The pacing was very good and almost felt like I watched a whole movie in only 20 mins! It was quick and to the point which I appreciate for a show like this. I don't want too much boring catch up, I WANT ACTION and I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks that going into this.

The humour isn't quite to my taste but that's just me and it done well don't get me wrong. I'm sure kids would have loved this back in the day. It clearly doesn't take itself too seriously which I appreciate. The only thing I found a bit disappointing was the lack of the classic Z on defeating the guards at the end. I know he did it in the jail cell and they still saw it but I wanted him to do it to the silly guards belly clothes to give a final hurrah. Oh well, a minor gripe.

This is a classic which a lot of people love so I'm sure people would love to tell me how much they love it right? Or maybe this was past your time and you have never heard of it? Well I recommend it if you like action for sure! Let me know in the comments what you think ;3

Disney challenge update

In case you were wondering where the Disney reviews have been the last week I promise I haven't given up. I just took a break to watch this years SGDQ event ^w^. In case you don't know, its a gaming event where they livestream video game speedruns and give prizes 24/7 for a whole week (yes non stop live stream) o earn money for charity. I have watched every year since I discovered it and I think this is year 3 or 4 I am watching now. Now its over, I would like to get back into the daily reviews but it might be a bit irregular due to the terrible heatwaves we are having here which are not good for my health and are just destroying me -_-' Will try to keep approximately on track tho.
