* AUGUST
august chuckles, pressing his lips to the can of beer for another sip. “you an’ me both..” he murmurs, shaking his head. while the male never thought he’d still be sharing an apartment with two others, especially having a good full time job and practically his entire trust fund, he liked being surrounded by his roommates. gus wasn’t so good at making himself socialize with others – florencia knew this quite well, but he’s gotten a lot better than he was their last year of high school together. he’d turned out to be quite a stick in the mud in senior year and once flo had moved and left him alone it did not get any better. gus hated senior year. he went through the motions of graduation and prom, only to keep his parents happy. it was the first time they both got dressed up since the funeral, the first time they got excited about something and gus couldn’t take that away from them. he leans forward, elbows resting on the railing of the balcony and he shrugs. “i don’t know.. it’s what you wanted in.. –” he’s stops himself, realizing this would be the quickest way to make their civil meeting turn sour. eyes flicker to her, hoping the mention would go unnoticed. “you were just better at it anyways.. so i figured it was your thing now..” it was probably wrong of him to assume, but it was only natural. he was the one bringing them down, he was the one that didn’t want to branch out and change, so without him she must’ve been able to, right?? “no.. i had a slow and painful loss.”
even though her apartment could often feel crowded, she was grateful for andi and leland. they were there when it seemed nobody else was. sure, she had sasha but sasha seemed to be quite popular around mulberry. who was florencia to cramp her style like that? besides, andi and leland had some sort of roommate obligation to talk to her and be around her, so she felt better about sitting in her living room. listening to gus cut himself was almost funny considering she got a whole ear-full when she proposed the idea. he was so quick to tell her what an awful idea it was back then ( and he was definitely right ) but now he decided not to hand her an i told you so. sure, he may have just not caught on yet, but that probably wasn’t the case. as often as she would joke about it, gus wasn’t an idiot. “ you’re right. it was what i wanted. ” emphasis on WAS. “ you’re just saying that to make me feel better. you and i both know you were the face of our duo. ” even though they were both very shy growing up, gus was somehow more likable. or at least more recognizable. and as much as she hated running into gus here, all thoughts of liv and other girls in the party had completely disappeared and she had calmed down ( slightly ). a short laugh escapes her lips as she heard his beer pong fate. “ your aim has always been pretty shit, ” she says with a small smile. “ you were doomed from the start. ”

nate: have you ever cared for a yucca tree??
nate: 911 i have an emergency!!
flo: yes!
flo: why, what's up?
group chat ✉ tp emergency!!!
Leland: hey sorry, barely on break
Leland: just how urgent is this emergency? do we have enough to get through the day?
Leland: i really don't have much time to stop for any after my shift but i guess i could take a few rolls from work
Andi: Thanks L that might just be the solution....also maybe but? Also we have like 1/4 of a roll and no backups. I don't know how it slipped past our last grocery run but it did!
Andi: Flo?? Thoughts? Are you able to?
Flo: i'm not out atm but i could possibly ask my brother to stop by the store?
Flo: i think he's working today
* ALLURA
“Last night I was trying this guided meditation that helps you meet your spirit guides,” Allura began to explain, “and it was honestly so relaxing that I fell asleep after fifteen minutes. I can’t decide if it was a coincidence or if my spirit guides don’t think I’m ready to meet them.” She took a sip of her smoothie, “Either way, I slept for almost fourteen hours, so I’d say it was a pretty good experience.”
florencia had always wanted to try her hand at meditation. she’d done yoga a couple of times and it was good at calming her down, so how different could meditation be? it seemed as though it was supposed to be more relaxing than yoga so it could probably even be better for her. “ that does sound nice, ” she mumbled as she agreed with a nod. “ could, uh, could you tell me all the steps? ”

* AUGUST
“yeah, i know..” he chuckles softly, shaking his head. his gaze flickers back to the penthouse and he can hear the rambunctious laughter coming from inside. he figures the beer pong table had been overtaken by a new duo, hopefully much better than his own. “i have no idea how they crammed this many people into one apartment, honestly..” when his eyes land upon her once again his chest tightens. he remembers their falling out so clearly – god, when he thinks about it now he feels like a complete idiot. none of that stuff really seemed to matter anymore. he wants to chalk it up to two young kids, scared, hurt, and desperately wanting things to stay how they were, how they liked them – gus and flo. august always thought this day would be awkward. ever since he found out she was living in his building he would psych himself up for the moment they would cross paths. what would he say? how he would act? this was quite anti climactic now, standing out on the balcony with her. wasn’t a bad thing though. “c’mon, i thought you would’ve been all over this..” there’s no bitterness in his voice. gus genuinely figured she would be the social butterfly she aspired to be in senior year. especially without him dragging them down. “i even managed a round of beer pong in there. – i by no means won, but..” gus shrugs, tearing his eyes from her. he’s only been round her for a few moments and he’s already itching to ask her about well.. everything. it’s been so long.
“ sometimes i wonder how i fit three people into my three bedroom apartment, ” she replied, her own attempt at a joke. it wasn’t fair that it was still so easy. she didn’t want him to think things were all good between them since she was lacking her usual stammer. however, it seemed to work to her advantage when he assumed she was comfortable in an environment like this. or, it would have if she actually was comfortable in an environment like this. she let out a sick laugh as she shook her head. maybe he didn’t know her as well as they both thought he did. “ what part of me would have led you to believe that? ” it was probably the urge for them to be more social. but once gus shut that all down and she moved to a brand new school she closed right back up, even shyer than she had previously been. life was harder without gus by her side. at least in baltimore she had gus. in new york and california, she had nobody. not for a while, at least. making friends had always been difficult so gus had always felt like a blessing. a friendship from the very start-- one that lasted and grew as they did. there was nothing like that anywhere else. nobody else could be that for florencia, no matter how much she wanted to admit it. “ did you win? ”

‘dunno how the hell you do it,’ miguel states with a frustrated sort of frown as he runs his calloused fingers across the various leaves of plants, jumping back a bit as a sprinkler comes on near his face. spitting out the bit of mist that had managed to land in his mouth, visibly annoyed, he switches sides with his little sister and shoves his hands in his pockets. ‘can’t seem to keep them alive to save my own life flo. pick one for me that’s like a beginner plant. like a baby beginner infant won’t-screw-it-up plant. how hard are those little cacti over there?’
bless mickey’s heart. ever since he joined the perreira he tried to provide the support her parents never could and she always tried to do the same for him. “ i know. i usually end up nursing them back to health when i enter your apartment. i’ve saved many a plant in my day, ” she told him as if he didn’t already know. “ i think you should try aloe. if you take good enough care of them, you get a nice prize. ” she was talking about the gel inside and maybe he wouldn’t have found that a good enough motivator, but it was something. with some other basic plants, it was just the satisfaction of knowing you could take care of them. florencia wouldn’t dare give him an actual fruit or vegetable plant, so this felt like the next best thing.
* JUDITH
JUDITH IS ENGROSSED IN HER OWN THEORIES , which is why when flo asks her to stop she’s surprised for a little . but it takes only a bit until her face lights up again . “ well , i don’t really know much about that . but i can always dig around , see what i can find ? ” jude shrugs . “ the only thing i know that comes close is gmo conspiracies , and they’re kind of interesting but not really plant related … ” the girl trails off , then decides to go for a different approach . “ why do you like them so much ? i mean , i’m terrible at keeping plants alive . even my cacti die . ”
it wasn’t at all surprising that the other didn’t have any theories based around plants. besides, if many existed, florencia felt like she would have heard about them by now. judith’s question made her a bit nervous because all she could think about was how she used to get teased for her love of plants as opposed to more ‘ normal ’ things for kids to enjoy. “ uh, well, we need them... for a long time, they, uh, they didn’t need us. but if we want things to get better... ” it was easier for flo to trail off than go on the rant she had been building inside her for as long as she could remember. “ also, um, i really liked layla from, uh, sky high. ” more than she should have.
* AUGUST
gus had not been expecting such a sharp reply from the female. not that he expected his presence would cause a shout of excitement. really august couldn’t expect anything from her. just because someone was once your best friend, it doesn’t mean you owe them anything, or she to him. their falling out had been so over the top. he didn’t have to avoid her, but he remembers months, even years after, avoiding any of the dinner’s and get together’s his parents hosted if their family was ever in town. especially around the holidays, because that was when it was more likely she’d be with them. he can’t see her face, but there’s something to be said about spending the copious amounts of time he’d spent with her growing up and it was that august could hear it in her voice that she was in fact, Not alright. he’s not going to call her out on it, of course, so he lingers, shuffling more onto the balcony until his elbows are resting on the railing. “guess s’none of my business..” he murmurs. gus lifts his beer to his lips, eyes watching the lights of the city dance. the commotion of the party is loud, though the air much easier to breath out here. he hums, shrugging his shoulders. “it’s alright. s’a big party. i knew the entire building was invited, but holy shit.. there’s a lot of people in there.. – are you having fun??” his gaze shifts slightly to look at her.
nothing about their most recent history gave florencia the impression that gus would be sticking around. she was very aware that he lived in the building all this time, but they had never quite made eye contact. still, to this very moment, she hadn’t seen his eyes. as of now, she was currently doing everything she could to not meet them-- looking everywhere that wasn’t him. even the black she saw when she shut her eyes was better than the look that was probably on his face. it was probably humorous to him to find her like this. she was the one who suggested they grow out of their shells and now she was the one avoiding the party and having a complete meltdown on the secluded balcony. this was probably what senior year gus would have loved to see to prove his point. she wasn’t so sure about twenty-five-year-old gus, though. a lot can happen in seven years. “ yeah, ” she nodded as she looked off into the distance. “ it’s so crowded in there. ” florencia had always hated being in large groups and gus knew that. he didn’t particularly like it either and that’s why they worked so well together. until they didn’t. she rubbed her hands together and let out a sigh, wondering what she was even doing at this party. it felt like she’d kept asking herself that without actually leaving. it wasn’t like anyone would notice she was no longer present. “ as much as i could have in... there. ” it was still easy to talk to gus, even after all these years her stammers weren’t present at all. however, it wasn’t normal to lie to the one person she used to tell everything to.
* JEREMY
jeremy hummed to himself, watering the plant until he saw some of the water leak out of the pot. that’s how it was meant to be, right? he let out a small, high pitched shriek in surprise, as someone spoke to him. quickly, he cleared his throat, immediately deepening his voice. “er- what?” he can’t help but ask, confused, looking at the girl, then back at the pot. “but it’s dry.. i forgot to water it a few days ago, so i thought it’d be better to give it EXTRA water this time. to make up for all the days it went without.” he explained, before frowning. “is that …not right?”
florencia slowly shook her head as he gave his explanation. “ you see, um, well, your plant feels like it’s drowning. ” her eyes looked from the top of the plant to the bottom and eventually landed on the small puddle on the ground. “ if you overwater it too often, the plant will, uh, it will wilt just the same as if you didn’t water it. you don’t... you don’t do this often, right? ”
listening was one of florencia’s greatest strengths-- at least, that’s what she told herself to make up for her own lack of communication. she’d been listening to judith’s theories for awhile now, and a lot of them were far too much for flo’s non-conspiracy theorist mind to handle. “ i, uh-- you lost me about, uh, four conspiracies ago? do you, um, do you have any about plants? ” / @rivts
florencia always felt too nervous to talk to people, especially strangers. but she also couldn’t stand by and watch someone mishandle a plant. “ excuse me! ” her voice was barely above a mumble but she was hoping he still heard her. “ it’s just-- uh, it’s really bad to overwater a plant. ” / @jvrvmys
i think it’s so wholesome that whenever me or my friends have issues w our plants 🌱 .. i always send my mom a pic and she gives us a diagnosis and what to do
