“We’ve got hotdog’s and s’mores on the go - take your pick and grab a beer, they’ll be ready in a few.”
“S’mores look good.”
“You look like you ain’t seen a bonfire this big before,” Gabe commented at the person next to him before glancing around casually to see if he found any other familiar faces as he took a swig of his beer. He wasn’t sure why he was here, really, not from Red Creek but he had roots here, history here so that was enough for now. “Want one?” He offered from the two bottles he’d taken for himself.
“I haven’t, I’m mostly used to ... the subtlety of bins on fire or something.” She admitted, nodding as he offered a bottle, “Thanks.”
“–Shit,” he muttered to himself, still zipping his jeans when he heard a knock on the door. His shirt was– somewhere, he’d find it. Truth be told, he was a little anxious about the Burning Boat festival. It wasn’t easy letting go. He didn’t want to leave his company waiting. Making his way to the door, he opened it and gave a crooked smile in greeting. “Hey, I’m almost ready. Just got to find my shirt and I’ll be ready to go. Five minutes, tops. Come in, please. Make yourself at home,” he said, gesturing for the other person to make their way inside his humble abode.
“Oh,” She murmured, glancing to the floor slightly embarrassed, “I’m sorry, I don’t think it was me you were expecting... You were in the bar earlier, you left your wallet... I uh, asked around and they told me where you lived, I’m sorry to interrupt.”
“I haven’t finished it yet but..” She wasn’t even sure they were listening; or if she was even talking to anyone in particular, her finger flicking over the edge of the pages, the slight wind from it barely felt on her face through the heat of the fire. “it’s something, right?” The book Alina had retrieved for her that once sat on her fathers bedside clutched in her hands; it was all she had really – even if she didn’t think this was going to do any good, Caitlyn knowing all to well that she’d hold the guilt over the death of her father, and her best friend for longer than she’d cared to admit.
She glanced to the side as the girl began to speak, listening carefully and offering a supportive smile where she thought it was appropriate. She tilted her head, attempting to assess what the girl had in her hands, but quickly gave up, looking away as she realised that it was perhaps more private than she realised. “Better than nothing,” She agreed, tucking her hands into her pockets as her fingers brushed over the edge of the photograph she had stuffed in her pocket, she wasn’t too ready to get it out yet.
“– It’s not the size, it’s what you do with it, right? Look, they ran out of smores and this was the next best thing. Take it or leave it, but I’m certainly incapable of eating it all myself.“
“Good job.”
“Somehow, you convinced me that this would be a night better spent than one at work; being paid. You never said I had to bring anything to burn, that’s completely on you. You’ve slipped up twice now, third and last chance to convince me this was a good idea.” He spoke with a slight amusement to his voice, though really; he felt none. He could have brought something; he could have brought plenty of things, but the truth was – burning anything wouldn’t take away his scars, it wouldn’t help him find his sister and it surely wouldn’t help him forget any of it. Not that he’d voice any of that, of course.
“It’s good to get out of the house from time to time, it’s a night off.” Darcy smiled, shrugging her shoulders at the male as she stared out to the boat, the fire sparked so bright in comparison to the darkened surroundings, it truly was beautiful, but Darcy couldn’t see the relation... Sure she liked to burn things, but she wasn’t ready to let go of the one thing that kept her bitter, it had become to prominent in her personality.
A torn off piece of cotton from an old t-shirt rested in Landon’s right hand. This was the last of that night—Landon had shredded everything that he wore that painful night except this one small piece. He sighed while his blue orbs viewed the flames. Suddenly, putting the material back into his pocket. “Maybe you should go first.”
She tilted her head, waiting for the male at her side to take his turn, but when he hesitated, she decided not to comment, only for the sake of not embarrassing him, but he finally spoke and she answered only with a shrug, “Sure.” She pulled out her own memorabilia, hesitating for a moment and before letting out a breath, “To letting go... I guess.”
‘’Well this is a right ol’ hoot.’’ Aemilia spoke out sarcastically to the footsteps that were coming from behind. ‘’Smores and blankets but yet no one provided shock therapy for them.’’ Standing tall from a far, close enough to see who was tossing what type of junk into the pit of flames. Her obvious judgemental stare was still plastered on her face as she held on tight to a particular gold ring (one she had in mind to throw in) and in the other a half empty bottle of whiskey. ‘’Its a load of rubbish.’’
She couldn’t help but notice the small object in the girl’s hand, but didn’t bother to comment, “It’s not for everyone, I guess.” She hummed, bringing the bottle to her lips, “Least they have booze and smores though.”
“They burnin’ shit yet?” he suddenly said as his eyes opened and he awoke after falling asleep on some person’s blanket as a half written, well, barely written letter lay to the left of him. Yes, this whole thing was a load of shit but in his drunken haze he had attempted to write something, anything about the shit that was happening to just – fuck, he didn’t know “– Tell me you brought somethin’ to drink.”
“Does a bear shit in the woods?” Darcy chuckled, pouring herself a shot and giving the bottle to the male at her side. He had fallen asleep beside her a half hour or so ago, and she’d spent that time getting buzzed.
“Glad I actually didn’t go on the boat. That would of been horrible.” She says with a chuckle.”So, what are you throwing in? I was thinking my panties, but I don’t think that’s the point to this, huh?”
“Probably not.” She smirked, surprised by the girl’s forwardness, but enjoying it nonetheless, friendliness was always appreciated. “But hell, why not?”
“Isn’t it beautiful?” Blair laughed, dancing around the fire. “Come on- join in the fun!”
“Your laughter’s infectious.”
“Honestly, I don’t get the point of all this. Burning bad memories is only going to make us think about the ‘what if’s’ and ‘what could have been.’ Just sets us up for opening old scars and leaving us vulnerable and messed up. Besides we would look like a bunch of fucking pagans around a fire burning shit.” Alessandra sighed rolling her eyes, “so are you still going because I have nothing else to do for the night. Maybe they might have music and booze?”
“I’m not gonna turn down a drink,” Darcy shrugged, “There’s something for everyone.”
“Please have that last s’more, okay? I have eaten enough for me to get embarrassed to tell you just how many of them I’ve had”
“I’ll take that action.”
“This was a brilliant idea, very therapeutic. I applaud whoever came up with this Burning Festival idea”
