Elphaba and Fiyero

Devastating that while the rest of Oz is scared of Elphaba during the plot events of the Wizard of Oz, whenever she's not actively doing something or distracting herself with her anger and single-minded pursuit of the shoes she's probably just sobbing by herself, thinking about Fiyero's death.

What do you love most about Fiyeraba as a relationship?

I think my favourite thing(s) about them is a mix of really solid writing such as them being reflections of each other, how they impact each other's character arcs, how their relationship explores the themes of the story- mixed with the fact that their story leans into the dramatic. They're torn apart by circumstance, they pine for years, they confess their love in a beautiful dramatic song, they're torn apart again, he sacrifices his life for her, she is wrecked by his death, she saves his life, they have a beautiful reunion after her love has literally transformed his very body. So really solid storytelling made even better by story beats that don't shy away from high stakes and emotion.

What do you love most about Fiyeraba as a relationship?

This feels like it could be a fanfic but not quite. But Elphaba trusting that if she follows Fiyero's plan he will get back to her and find her. Waiting beneath the floor, maybe the part of her brain that was so sure he could never have feelings for her in "I'm not that girl" despite the obvious signs telling her she's crazy and he couldn't possibly be alive. Her choosing to believe the impossible anyways. How she must have felt when she finally heard him call for her.

I think one of the many reasons I love Fiyeraba is that it’s one of the few m/f “villain romances” I can think of where the woman is the villain.*

I feel like often when there’s a love story (or at least romantic tension) between a “good heroic” character and a more dubious/villainous character, usually the man is the villain. Part of this because lots of women wanna fuck villains. But I also suspect part of this is because we tend to hold fictional female characters to higher standards of likability/morality. So, we don’t as often see the reverse.

Even in the few instances where a hero has romantic tension with a female villain (including my beloved batcat and aeon) it rarely ends in a canonical happy ending with them together. It usually ends in the villain’s defeat or them just leaving because it could never work out.

And Wicked looks at that and goes: Nope. The female villain will get a happy ending with her beloved and she won’t have to change for him.

And as someone who hates “brooding alpha males” in romance fiction and loves female villains/antiheroes, it’s really refreshing to see a story that inverts the tired “good girl fixes the bad boy” plotline.

Instead, they do “good boy runs off with the bad girl” which you just don’t see as often.

*(I know Elphaba is more of an antihero but she’s a villain in the eyes of Oz and she’s based on the villain from The Wizard of Oz so I still think she counts)
