A few Orchids I picked up from an Orchid show a couple of days ago. (the flowering ones on the sill are Cattleya orchids, and the one sitting on the floor is a Dendrobium speciosum)
Also loving the fragrance of these lovelies! I had always known Cattleya orchids were fragrant but not so much to fill up entire rooms!
The others are a few Odontocidium and Phalaenopsis orchids that I’ve had for quite a while now :)
Hello! I've just acquired an elephant ear plant(black magic if my googling is correct). I was trying to figure out how to care for it from google but found nothing about growing them indoors :/ I was wondering if you might have any tips for me? :) Also your blog is great and the reason I wanted to start getting tropical plants C:

Unfortunately, I don’t have any experience with the black magic version of elephant ear. Perhaps my followers have tried them indoors?

Alocasia (Elephant Ear plants) thrive well in filtered light, indoors. They also LOVE water. This is so they can maintain the moisture in their leaves and keep them from drying out. However, you should always be careful with over watering as this may attract pests (especially if they are kept indoors) or cause eventual root rotting. I find fertilising them once a fortnight with nitrogen or seaweed fertiliser is adequate enough to keep them thriving with new leaf growths. Lastly, keep the plant away from cold drafts, as this can cause dormancy in tropical plants like this one.

Hi ! I’ve had this Monstera Deliciosa for about 3 months now. I don’t think its doing so well. I think my AC might be harming it. All the new baby leaves are yellow and some of the big leave have brown edges. Any advice on how to make my plant happy again?

First cut off the unsightly leaves - you will feel better about the plant. Second, where is this plant located? Monsteras need to be near a window but out of direct sunlight (an hour or two is okay). Lastly, make sure you’re aerating the soil in addition to watering/fertilizing. Good luck!

Sounds like your humidity is very low. These plants thrive in tropical conditions, especially in humid atmosphere. The AC is likely cause harm by drying out the moisture from the air and in the process from the young leaves and the soil as well. Like houseplantjournal suggested, it’s best you move the plant and provide regular waterings and fertilise well once a fortnight.

Hello, I have a fern, Osmunda regalis (I'm pretty sure, the label just said fern.) It's drying out really badly. I've cut back almost all of it and I'm getting some new shoots. Is there anything I can do to keep it healthier until winters over and its not as dry??
Hi there! I’m actually not that good with ferns (I had a Boston fern that eventually died while making a terrible mess of dried leaves). If you need to create an environment of high humidity, I suggest a humidity dome if it can fit. Else, a tray of pebbles with some water will also help to humidity the surrounding air.

If the fern is turning dry and brown at the tip of the fronds, that usually means there’s not enough humidity, like the poster above suggested. Best way to control this is using lukewarm water and spray twice a day. This should hopefully make your fern happier. :)
Also some tips with the watering is that it’s best that you don’t water on top of the fern and put a bowl or a tray underneath the pot and let it seep in that way. As the new fronds and roots near the top of the soil tend to be more sensitive to moisture and often rot if watered too often. Water every 3-6 day depending where you keep your fern. and note that it’s more likely to kill a fern from over watering rather than under watering.
For the soil, make sure you have well draining soil, as this will prevent eventual root rot.

@houseplantjournal Hi, the biggest factors for loss of leaves on boston ferns is due to lack of light. Overall boston ferns and other ferns like maidenhairs struggle surviving indoors due to the lack of light and humidity, despite being commercially labelled as ‘indoor’ plants, which is only a marketing label to lure in more buyers. It is still possible to grow these ferns indoor, only that it is very difficult to understand what the plant wants before it is too late. I hope I helped you understand what may have gone wrong with your fern. :)

Hi, Could this possibly be ‘Imaptiens Sodenii’? The leaves show a similarity of some kind of tall species of impatiens.
