Did anyone else feel the latest Enola Holmes movie felt very incohesive and messy. Compared to the other two this wasn't great, it had it's cute moments with Enola and Tewksbury and Enola with Dr Watson. Also the one story told by Dr Watson about his relationship with Sherlock which was very sweet.
But Eudoria felt like a caricature of herself, like no mention was made of her being a suffragette, only that she likes to make expositions and is on the run because of that.
And how the whole story played out, it was just messy.
I really like Enola Holmes. Fun character, good movies (and books), and all that. But what are they doing with this modern wedding dress and makeup at the end of the third movie? I understand us putting in modern feminist values, but can we please stick to the historically accurate costuming? 🙏🏽😭
● Enola the move you pulled on Tewksbury was. Not cool. At all. I know he knows she's very career-driven and he loves it but he was literally standing at the altar and you were still at home. This communication is so shit- c'mon girl I expected better from you than to have last minute second thoughts and nearly bail (before anyone comes at me trust I would be just as if not more critical if the genders were swapped)
● The mystery just felt so lacking. Neither Enola nor Moriarity had thought ahead far enough for it to be shocking. I mean, I literally had to rewatch the 2nd movie to pick up on all the clues I missed first time around- but in this one I guessed half the clues before Enola did. Girl what. Moriarity legit LED Enola to where Sherlock and the lady were kept captive. There were practically no twists and it felt like the movie was over before it even started. Enola follows 2 people who end up being killed before she reaches them and I have so many questions about both the chases.
● The lack of interactions between Sherlock and Watson was sad
● Kind of disappointed in Sherlock not gonna lie. I mean, has he never been kidnapped and held hostage for what, 2 days, before? The insanity felt somewhat ooc— though I do adore Lady Tewksbury. She was so strong and definitely one of the best parts of this movie
● These movies are pleasantly period accurate most of the time, but I'd assumed it was one of those colourblind shows since it never addressed race before. So when it suddenly brought up the topic of colonisation and racism I was SAT (especially since I've been seeing colonisation-was-good bs more frequently these days which. As someone who lives in a country that was colonised by Europeans for around 4 centuries. Ew.) But it was executed... so... horribly. It felt so out of nowhere and disconnected with the usual themes of the movies. Now I wish they did keep it colourblind
● For a feminist movie franchise, this was really lacking the feminism. They brought it up a little at the start with how Enola had doubts about marriage (especially to a Lord) and what it might do for her freedom. And then they kind of didn't mention it again till the end. I would've liked that to have been a running point through the movie- especially since Enola being alone has always been one of her biggest fears.
● Instead of the whole colonisation plot, I think this would've fit a class issue much more. The snide remarks about Enola being of a lower class and Tewksbury's work for equality would've tied in much better. It's something that these movies have talked about before so it wouldn't be random, but would instead give a chance to dive in a lot deeper with it all on a more personal level (since class and marriage issues have never personally affected either of the mcs before)
● Did Tewksbury actually just. Give up the Lord title? The title he was using to advocate for the rights of the poor? Did bro just do exactly what granny tewksbury tried to make him do? What. On Earth. DOESN'T THE WHOLE MYSTERY OF THE FIRST MOVIE REVOLVE AROUND HIM WANTING TO BE A LORD AND HELP PEOPLE!?
● I felt like there were so many shots where I could see the cakey makeup. Don't talk to me about that horrible 21st century summer dress she got married in. Also man this isn't really related to the movie but I really don't get Hollywood beauty standards. Millie looked so natural and youthful in those flashbacks (which. Why were there so many flashbacks.) But the lip filler and whatever else she's done to her face makes her look so much older and sadder. Why do they all get rid of their perfect natural features man ):
● The "woman and husband" was fun, I'll give them that. Also a big fan of women not giving up their names when they marry. The ocean swim scene was really sweet and romantic. Yeah.
