please wish my very favourite son a good second turn in the oven. i bisque fired him last year along with mushroom puppy & co, left him on a shelf in my house for a couple of months and then promptly knocked him off and he lost an ear. which i've stuck back on with bisque repair. which i've never used before. good luck ear

Let me have this. Look at the state of my country. Let me have this.
“… and he came awake like someone struggling to the surface of a lake of laudanum, where the strongest delights were the deepest and there was nothing above but cold and fear and duty.”
-Philip Pullman, La Belle Sauvage
Reading La Belle Sauvage after re-reading the HDM trilogy for the first time in like a decade. Minor spoilers.
I’m only about halfway through it, and I’ve found the way that The League of St. Alexander permeated the lives of schoolchildren unusually unnerving. Naturally, the way that the Magisterium affects the lives of everyone in the HDM trilogy is unsettling, but it isn’t the slow progression from nothing to control that is illustrated in La Belle Sauvage.
I find the imagery harrowing, with the way that the academics of Malcom’s school are replaced.
I’ve heard very mixed things about La Belle Sauvage and the rest of the Book of Dust, and I’m trying to reserve my own judgement until I’ve finished the trilogy, and not hold my expectations too high. But I’m in awe of Pullmans ability to make me feel more than a little unsettled.
