       she’s trembling by the time abby’s finished, even though she knows emotional attachment to her clients is a danger zone. alicia isn’t an idiot, she’d understood that what she’d done wasn’t going to be popular, but she hadn’t expected anything close to this level of vitriol. ❝ if you want to HATE me, ❞ she finally says, tone measured but slightly shaky, ❝ then fine. hate me. my first priority is to keep you and clarke safe, not to be your friend. would you rather the plaintiff subpoenaed her to testify in COURT ? because that’s what was going to happen. ❞

     ❝ it’s not fair, i know it isn’t, but there’s NO way to keep her out of it. i’ll prep her, you’ll be right beside her, and i’ll do everything in my power to keep her out of a courtroom. i’m right beside you two and in front. i’m always right beside you and in front. ❞

alicia flushes and looks down, hands tightening briefly into little fists.  ❝ i never said you ––- hang on, i think i just heard my phone. ❞  and with that she’s off into her bedroom to track down her cellphone in the hopes that by the end of a feigned work conversation, abby will have miraculously forgotten it all.  maybe she’ll just kiss alicia without turning it into a therapy session about why she’s so skittish, or maybe she’ll pretend none of it ever happened –– at least, that’s what she wants to have happen.

Speaking of waiting. Alicia has never, ever been good at it - even waiting for Santa Clause as a child. She’s practically vibrating with anxiety as she chips away at work, wanders around her kitchen, waits for Abby to ring her doorbell –– so much so that when it happens, she nearly jumps out of her skin. Holding her wine glass, trying to hide the way the dark surface ripples with her shaking hand, she opens the door with a smile. “Abby, hi. Welcome to the humble abode,” she says with a gesture around. “There’s more wine in the kitchen, if you want it.”

        Alicia’s so lost that she’s almost forgotten that it’s not normal to be nearly in tears in the middle of a bar. Well, not exactly the middle - she’s at a table in the corner trying to look as though she’s waiting for somebody. Slim fingers dance around the base of her glass absently and she stares blankly into the surface, trying to convince herself that this is the only drink she’ll have before she goes home. 

             ( She doesn’t want to go home. She doesn’t want to face how quiet it                is with Grace away. She misses having an office building to retreat                into so her loneliness looks like work ethic. )

      Seeing a former client on the other side of the room - a renowned doctor, no less, one she’d flirted with after the case, no less - is the absolute last thing she needs, but the world, Alicia thinks bitterly, hasn’t really had her best interests in mind lately. They’ve made eye contact before she can figure out what to do with that information and so she smiles reflexively, checking the time on her phone. She knows that on the surface she looks fantastic, but Dr. Abigail Griffin is more perceptive than Alicia’s ever been comfortable with. 

       abby knows something’s off from the moment she sees her. they’re not friends per se, but abby’s perceptive, and legal cases require spending a fair amount of time together. abby likes to think she knows alicia well enough for her instincts to be reliable. the way the other woman’s face twists into panic when she sees abby walking towards her only verifies her suspicions.

       there’s a soft smile playing on her lips. she’s trying to appear as non-threatening as possible. ❝ alicia! long time no see. can i JOIN you for a round or two? ❞

        alicia watches with her usual nervous observance as abby comes over, unable to glean any comfort from the other woman’s clothes ( gorgeous, but just modern enough to be intimidating ) or even the way she walks ( steady and confident, hips swaying, of course ). she reminds herself that abby is kind, abby is funny and easy to talk to, but she still finds herself straightening up and putting on her lawyer face as she arrives at the table. 

      ❝ of course, ❞ she says with a matching smile.  ❝ my new legal partner got caught up with a case –– no sense drinking alone, right? ❞ she’s aiming for light and joking, but she’s not sure how it comes across. she’s also lying, of course, but the truth is long and complicated and she really doesn’t feel like telling it.
