Siam to Thailand
The transition from Siam to Thailand in 1939 marked a significant shift in national identity and modernization efforts. The new name, "Thailand," meaning "land of the free," was intended to foster a sense of unity and pride among the citizens. This change highlighted the country's unique heritage and its status as the only Southeast Asian nation never colonized by European powers.
Prime Minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram, known as Phibun, spearheaded the renaming as part of his broader vision for modernizing and Westernizing the country. Phibun's government implemented various cultural and social reforms aimed at creating a cohesive national identity. The name "Thailand" symbolized this new direction and reflected the leader's strong nationalist sentiments.
Additionally, the renaming was influenced by the rising tide of nationalism at the time. The new name underscored the ethnic Thai identity, distinguishing the country from its significant Chinese and Indian populations. In the context of global events leading up to World War II, Phibun's alignment with the Axis powers and the name change were efforts to assert a stronger, more independent national stance.
Creating famous symbol around Vietnamese temples
In Vietnam, I noticed a recurring symbol present in every temple we visited. Inspired by its cultural significance, I decided to integrate it into my project.
Creating this symbol was straightforward: I began with a cube, adjusting its dimensions to match the desired width and depth. Next, I carefully selected the sections I wanted to intrude, then extruded them downward to form the intricate pattern within the mesh.
Finalising Materials
The remainder of the process involved experimenting with various stone textures to determine the most suitable option for the exterior of the pillars. Additionally, I deliberated on the ideal color for the temple pillars.
I adorned the pillars scattered throughout the temple with the intricate symbols I crafted. Placing them around each pillar, I ensured that they seamlessly blended with the temple's overall design, adding an extra layer of cultural significance and visual appeal.
Flying Buttress
A flying buttress is an architectural feature most commonly associated with Gothic architecture. It consists of a support or buttress that stands apart from the main structure and connects to it via an arch. This innovative design allows buildings to have higher walls and larger windows by redistributing the weight and counteracting the lateral forces pushing the walls outward.
In the context of my temple project, incorporating flying buttresses could be highly relevant. Firstly, they provide essential structural support for tall walls or expansive spaces, ensuring stability without compromising the aesthetic and functional aspects of the design. This is particularly useful for my temple's grandiose elements that require additional support to maintain their integrity.
Moreover, flying buttresses contribute significantly to the visual appeal of a structure. Their intricate and dynamic design adds complexity and interest to the overall look of the building. By integrating these elements into my temple, I can enhance its visual complexity and create a more captivating and authentic representation.
Lastly, the inclusion of flying buttresses could symbolize a fusion of architectural styles and cultural influences. This approach aligns perfectly with my project’s theme of diversity and cultural representation. By blending traditional Vietnamese architectural principles with elements from Gothic architecture, my design can reflect a rich tapestry of cultural and historical influences, highlighting the interconnectedness and diversity of architectural heritage.
Lost temples of Cambodia
The lost temples of Cambodia, such as the famed Angkor Wat and the myriad of other ancient structures hidden within the jungle, have always fascinated me. These temples are a testament to the grandeur and sophistication of the Khmer Empire, showcasing intricate carvings, towering spires, and complex layouts that reflect both religious devotion and architectural ingenuity. The way these temples have withstood the test of time, often reclaimed by nature, adds a layer of mystique and wonder to their already impressive legacy.
In relation to my Vietnam temple project, the lost temples of Cambodia provide a profound source of inspiration. Both Vietnamese and Cambodian cultures share deep historical ties and influences, particularly through the spread of Buddhism and Hinduism. Studying the Cambodian temples has given me insights into the regional architectural styles and religious symbolism that have permeated Southeast Asian culture.
For my project, I aimed to capture the essence of Vietnamese temple architecture while subtly incorporating elements inspired by Cambodian temples. The intricate carvings and the sense of spiritual grandeur found in Cambodia's lost temples helped guide my design choices, adding a layer of depth and historical context. This cross-cultural blend enriches my project, highlighting the shared heritage and diversity of architectural styles in the region.
By drawing inspiration from the lost temples of Cambodia, my temple project not only pays homage to Vietnam's cultural heritage but also acknowledges the broader tapestry of Southeast Asian history. This approach allows me to create a design that resonates with a sense of timelessness and interconnectedness, much like the ancient structures that continue to captivate and inspire us today.
Adding Materials
I adjusted the color of the roof material to a lighter shade and started experimenting with applying a metallic texture. However, I found that this didn't meet my expectations, so I reverted back to the original material.
My intention was to create two distinct sections of the roof to enhance its texture and detail. However, during this process, I encountered difficulties that caused me to lose the materials I had previously applied. Consequently, I had to almost entirely recreate them. Due to time constraints, I wasn't able to separate the sections as originally planned, resulting in them sharing the same color. While I wasn't entirely satisfied with this outcome, I had to accept it as there wasn't much else I could do at that point.
Creating pattern for pillars
To craft the intricate pattern to go onto the pillars, I turned to a design I discovered on Pinterest for inspiration. Using a straightforward approach, I shaped a basic mesh to match the outline of the pattern.
This process was relatively straightforward, although I encountered some challenges when refining the intricate details, especially the ornate ends of the design. After carefully adjusting each section, I applied a smooth shading technique, complemented by a smooth modifier, resulting in a final design that met my expectations.
Unfortunately I ended up losing this design as my work hadn’t saved so had to completely restart it which was frustrating.
Adding fences and pillars around temple
As I began duplicating and pasting the roof sections, I noticed that the result appeared somewhat haphazard, as if it had been hastily assembled. I made adjustments to rectify this issue later on.
I started by integrating the fence I had previously crafted in another project, along with the pillars, encircling the temple's perimeter. These elements were then joined together using the fence sections from another project, which I had also utilized near the base of the temple, close to the steps.
Following this, I incorporated a redesigned version of the pillars and affixed them to the front of the temple. This adjustment served to bolster the thickness of the wall, preventing an overwhelming presence of the fence. Moreover, the addition of this design injected further intricacy into the wall's appearance, complementing the temple's overall aesthetic.
Adding pillar into scene
These pillars feature the iconic Vietnamese symbol that I meticulously incorporated. Beginning with a simple and unadorned design, I intended to enhance them gradually. Yet, as I observed the temples we visited, I noticed their simplistic elegance, inspiring me to maintain a similar aesthetic
With the addition of materials and subtle embellishments, I aimed to infuse realism into the design, ensuring it harmonized seamlessly with the temple's atmosphere.
Modelling fence
Creating the gate was a straightforward task, drawing inspiration from both Pinterest and my own photographs from Vietnam. Many of the gates featured a circular design at the top, which I replicated with relative ease. Starting with a circle, I removed the center portion and positioned it between the first and second pillars. To extend its length, I applied an array modifier, adjusting the values until I achieved the length I was satisfied with.
Similarly, I applied the same process to the bottom of the gate. I crafted a basic circle and modified it to form a pattern that met my expectations. Afterward, I utilized an array modifier to replicate the pattern across the gate's width. Finally, I merged the meshes together to create a unified object.
More modelling of my temple
Employing a mirror modifier, I replicated the achieved design from one side onto the other, achieving the desired symmetrical effect. Subsequently, I affixed the previously crafted bar onto the top of the temple's base, completing the look to my satisfaction.
I placed the roof I designed onto the temple and was pleased with the result. Subsequently, I duplicated the entire structure and stacked it on top. However, upon doing so, I noticed that the stairs appeared mismatched. To rectify this, I revisited the design and removed the steps from all levels except the ground floor. I then repeated this process until reaching a height that met my expectations.
Beginning the temple
Creating the temple model turned out to be quite straightforward, as I had already prepared the essential components. I introduced a cube into the scene and carved out its middle section to form a foundation for the steps. Subsequently, I extended the steps, which I had previously refined with beveling, and affixed them to the base.
I had outlined a rough plan for creating the model, starting from the base and progressing upward. I began by crafting the bar that would link the roof to the building's base. This step was relatively straightforward, involving extrusion, intrusion, and the application of a solidify modifier to give it a bar-like appearance. Following that, I incorporated fence posts, which I had crafted in a previous project, around the perimeter of the steps.
I extended the walls upward and integrated the pillars I had prepared into key areas. Utilizing modifiers, I meticulously carved small, uniform incisions into the mesh, achieving the distinctive transparency effect reminiscent of the walls found in Vietnamese temples.
Roof with materials
Initially, I fashioned the design with the material, but it lacked visual interest. To remedy this, I decided to enhance it by doubling up on certain sections, particularly at the ends. Additionally, when integrating it into the temple structure, I opted to modify its shape from rectangular to square, aligning it more seamlessly with the design of my temple.
Roof Modelling
I commenced refining the details on the curved sections of the roof, a process initiated by shaping a cube to approximate the envisioned form. Drawing inspiration from the intricate architecture of the Vietnamese temples I had observed, I extruded certain sections to enhance the level of detail. While not depicted in these photos, I duplicated these elements and extended them along the original roof. Regrettably, I forgot to capture screenshots of this procedure. Nevertheless, the process was straightforward, involving duplicating and stacking the elements before further extruding to elongate the scale.
Roof Modelling
Next, I applied the new material onto the initial mesh I had crafted, employing the snap tool to ensure precise alignment between the material and the mesh shape. Utilizing the x-ray mode aided in maintaining clarity while executing this process. Some adjustments were necessary, requiring me to separate certain sections and incorporate the solidify modifier to enhance the roof's dimensionality..
Roof Modelling
Following that, I repeated the same method utilised during the initial attempt to build the framework and texture of the roof. Drawing inspiration from the weathered, woody appearance observed in various Vietnamese temples during my travels, I selected a material reminiscent of aged timber to imbue the structure with authenticity and character.
