Trial annotations I produced using the software Procreate. These annotations were used to test the placement of the writing on the page:
Initial ideas and rough concepts that I produced in my workbook:
Reflection:
My intention for this spread was to display the events of the story that led up to the discovery of the monster. I am very happy with all the information I was able to display on this spread and that despite it being very entry focused, I was able to break up the overall layout with the inclusion of the tree drawing on the left hand side.
Overall, I am very happy with the information I displayed and how I went about doing so. Unfortunately, when I first produced the drawing for this spread, I underestimated how much writing I needed to fit into the blank space and unintentionally left myself with very little room to fill. This has left the left page looking very overcrowded, especially as it's placed alongside the negative space that fills the background of the drawing across the rest of the page. I'm overall a lot happier with the way the right page turned out, however, I wish I had decided on a slightly different layout regarding the way I placed the two sheets of text. I produced and finalised the entry on the lined paper before I had written the second one and unfortunately didn't allow myself much room after I glued the sheet in. While my outcome provides texture and allows for the page to become interactive, the contrast in the paper didn't work as well together as I had hoped it would.
Journal entry 6:
"21st April
Site tour is tomorrow. I think Dad has plans to renovate the place, not sure why he's planning to throw so much money into that shit hole, it isn't like him. I don't know how this benefits him. It's not my place to ask questions, he knows what he's doing if he wants to turn that place around, so be it. Still not sure why he's so adamant about me tagging along. It's just an old pharmaceutical facility. At least it'll be a good distraction. I don't want to think anymore about last night. I just want this week to be over, wish Cass would at least call me back. I've had enough of this all."
Journal entry 7:
"22nd April
What even is this facility? Half the place was restricted access. I could barely even call it a tour. Dad's adamant about this, though I snuck off while he was looking over the property information. Far side of the building was riddled with locked doors and cameras can't say how long it's been since they were last used. Only got through because of the temporary access pass I was given. The further I got through the building, the quieter it got. This whole facility is like a time capsule from the 80s. Nothing has been touched in years, everything was left as if it were abandoned suddenly. The layout is a mess. There was this wall of portraits along one of the corridors, some dated back to as early as the 1910s. Half of them were on the floor and each had a staircase behind it.Â
One portrait shared my last name, Fiato. It was too dark for me to get a chance to see down any of the staircases, but that portrait has to be of my great grandfather. I don't even know if Dad is aware our family is connected to this place, or if that's the reason he's buying it to begin with. But surely he'd tell me something this important. Would he even tell me if I asked?"
Journal entry 8:
"25th April
There's something locked away in here.
I went back.
There's something down those stairs. I know what I saw, I wasn't mistaken. It was being contained behind a glass wall. It was moving..crawling. How long has it been there? I don’t even know what to call that… thing. Is it even human? Was it human? It resembled the form of a one, but its antlers say otherwise. How long has this facility been abandoned? Is Dad even aware of what's being held down here? Does it need to eat..? It didn't react to my flashlight, nor did it react to my footsteps. Does it have any senses at all?
I'll go back again tomorrow. Just to check on it.."

Winsor Newton Sepia coloured ink and dip pen for stains and annotations, 7B graphite pencils for drawing, black marker for the majority of the writing and lined, printing paper and sticky notes used as the base for writing entries and additional notes.
Visitor badge produced for the sixth page of the journal:
I produced this design on the software Procreate and included the logo for the company Inde-cy that I had created previously for the note pad design.
The main focus of the sixth page revolves around a site tour that the author is forced to participate in by his father. The author's family buys the deeds to a run down pharmaceutical facility with the intention to renovate it to expand their cytology company Inde-cy. This tour is what enables the author to come across the monster and this discovery kicks off the start of the author's experiments. I created this badge to reflect these themes and to provide additional context to communicate my intentions for the page.
To allow room for mistakes, I printed out two copies of the design and cut them out with a ruler and an exacto knife before threading the designs through a laminator. When I cut around the first laminated copy, I cut too closely to the original design, which caused the laminated film to become detached at the edges and led to the whole design falling apart. When approaching the second copy, I was overly cautious and left a significantly larger amount of room between the edge and the initial design. This eliminated the problems I faced in the first copy and I'm happy I made the decision to produce multiple copies, as it allowed me to learn from my mistakes.

Initial layout and design ideas:
Reflection:
I wanted to portray a page that solely had text on it. I’m hoping that this contrast of an entry focused page compared to the previous spreads that are packed with additional information will highlight the importance of the message being portrayed. This entry is so important to the author that he didn’t have time to consider layout or arrangement. I wrote quickly to portray a sense of panic and worry in his words. I also used various line weights throughout the entire paragraph to show the inconsistency and lack of care for presentation across this spread. I made sure the annotations were longer on this spread to showcase that the contents of this entry have a lot of significance that's still weighing on his mind. I also made sure to make the author speak very negatively about himself in his annotations. He's trying to prove that his initial feelings weren't valid by expressing that his actions were a waste of time and that he wasn't the one who started the problems to begin with, so it shouldn't matter.
Journal entry 5:
“Watched Cassian punch a guy, I've never seen him lose his composure like that. For someone with so much self control he didn't give the other guy a chance to breathe. Some prick was touching on Beatrice, Cass had every right to get angry on her behalf. He only threw punches after the first guy did and I just stood there and watched as his teeth went straight through his mouth. I don't know why I didn't step in, I just let it happen? I felt paralyzed. Cass is always so perfect, I didn't know he could lose control like that. Was it the influence of the drinks or was it something else? Is that much violence even allowed for someone like him? It's like I witnessed something that wasn't supposed to happen. Cass just brushed it off as anger but I've never seen him angry. He told me he doesn't get angry... But what exactly does it mean to become angry? If I became angry then, how would that benefit anyone? Dad has always been against strong emotions so I've never thought to try, but how do I express the feeling of anger in a justifiable way? I asked Evianna about it but she just laughed and brushed it off. Maybe I didn't use the right words when I asked.”
Annotations:
"Never should've agreed to go. I was too naive to realise none of this would ever benefit me, there was no point."
"Did I ever even understand him as well as I claimed I did?"
"He's the one who got worked up, not my fault, he couldn't keep his emotions in check."
"He's deceitful, he's just like me. We were never as different as I had initially assumed."
"All a waste of precious time"
"I can't keep up"
Graffiti name tag representing the author of the journal.
I shortened the author's name, Niccolò, to Nick and practised various stylised variants of the characters in his name till I found a design I was content with.
I used a black Ohuhu alcohol marker on masking tape to complete the design and then placed the tag on the inside of the first page of the journal.
I gained inspiration for this design from graffiti I’ve seen displayed in various forms of media. Gachiakuta and the various displays of graffiti art that cover the walls of the fictional town Canvas Town, Miles Morales' name tag that he displays around the city using paste ups and the cover of Sean’s journal from Life is Strange 2.

Trial annotations I produced using the software Procreate. These annotations were used to test the placement of the writing on the page:
Reflection:
There’s one very key section of information that I wanted to express on this page, that being the note from the authors father that’s scribbled down on an old envelope. This message is the main set up for the events that will be portrayed throughout the rest of the journal, as it highlights the lead up to when the author encounters the monster he will eventually experiment on.
I definitely believe that the majority of this page is filled with information that isn't crucial to the main story of the journal. A large portion of the information that’s been portrayed on this spread is only there to add to the world building and to develop the author's personality rather than showcasing the main story I’m trying to tell. I wanted to display a note from the author's father and have it be what changes the trajectory of the journal's story. Unfortunately, I struggled to find a way to incorporate that note into the entries I had previously planned, so in turn, I created a whole separate spread that would be wholly centred around the note. To fill in the negative space surrounding the note, I added as much information as possible that would expand on the author's personality.
For how much importance I’ve put on the note from the author's father, it unfortunately doesn’t stand out all that much in comparison to the rest of the information that’s displayed on the spread. If I were to approach the layout of this page again, I would’ve written the note in a brighter colour that contrasts with the rest of the page, with thicker and heavier line weight to distinguish it more compared to the rest of the written text on the spread.
This spread follows the design layout that I produced for the first two pages. I’m a lot happier about the direction I went in for this spread compared to the page I produced previously. While I’ve gone back to the style I used for the start of the journal, this contrast makes the third page stand out even further than before. I did attempt to make the spread overcrowded with information to balance out the contrast the third page brings to the overall journal, but I don’t believe I was able to portray the details in the same way I did in the previous spread.
Overall, I’m not the happiest with the completed layout of this spread. There are definitely some sections I could have approached a lot differently, but due to how little time I allocated myself to spend on this spread, I rushed a lot of sections and was messy when including additional details.
Journal entry 4:
The fourth entry displayed in my journal project:
“12th April
Cassian talks about love all the time, his love for food, movies, music, his girlfriend. His whole world is centred around the feeling; everything he does revolves around what he loves and those he loves, and by being near him he’s introduced me to all his overwhelming feelings. I'm jealous of how easily he knows how to express himself. I think it's because love comes to him like it's second nature, all he knows how to do is love and that's where we're different. Love follows him around everywhere, love is drawn to him like a moth to a flame and I am a deer paralysed by his light.”
Annotations:
“he’ll understand, he’ll understand, he gets me, he knows this is right, i’m doing the right thing.”
“Revisit original logo. Name needs to be more on display, abbreviate name further”
"I need it all to be flawless before I present my results to him. They need to be perfect."
"I don't have a sufficient amount of time this isn't enough. I need to gather more evidence before the renovations start."
"I can't let him be a point of comparison anymore"

Completed piece:
Reflection:
The drawing above is of the sculpture “Angel of the Night” also known as “Angelo della Notte” by Italian sculptor Giulio Monteverde, created in 1885. This sculpture depicts an androgynous angel perched above a tomb located in Verano Monumental Cemetery. The statue has a protective presence despite its melancholic expression. Its placement in a cemetery is also a reflection of being an interpretation for death and grief, as if it guards over those who now lie in the cemetery grounds.
What drew me to this stature was how reflective the subject's expression is and it's symbolisation for grief and death. I wanted the expression of the sculpture to reflect the contents of the journal entry to the left of the piece. The author is in a state of reflection and confusion. He has observed a characteristic in someone he is presumably close to and is reflecting on the fact that he will never be able to be like them because of their striking differences. I wanted to portray a feeling of grief in the author's writing as well, he’s jealous and disappointed that he will never be able to be like someone he admires.
I finished the shading and rendering of this piece in just under an hour, meaning the overall depth and proportions are a lot weaker compared to my two previous drawings. For the time I had, I’m very happy that this is the outcome, but I do wish I could’ve spent more time making the proportions more accurate to the source material in the initial sketch, so that it was easier for me to apply details in the rendering process.
I am very unhappy with the proportions of this piece, especially when placed in comparison to the source material. Throughout all of the pieces I’ve worked on during this project, the proportions of my drawings have always been my weak point and are definitely something I am striving to improve on for future projects.

Envelope note for the 4th page of my journal:
I wanted to produce another note from the authors father that would look similar to the one I produced for the front of the journal. My intention is to portray, similarly to the previous note, that this was put together in a very rushed manner and that there was a lack of care for the material the note was written on.
I found an old envelope lying around the house and thought it would be perfect to use as the base of the note that’s from the authors father.
The envelope is ripped and torn and the Inde-cry logo is seen displayed in the top left hand corner. There’s no care in this note and no consideration for who’s going to receive it the only concern is getting the importance of the message across.
I took a picture of the envelope and trialed through two different styles in the software Procreate to use as a reference when completing the actual note.

Writing included in the note:
“Site tour

Don't park out front, use the field to the left, side entrance is unlocked, we will meet you there. Your involvement is necessary, we need you here son you'll understand once you see it. - Dad”

Reflection:
Overall, I am very happy with the outcome of this spread. I was able to include everything I wanted to in a cohesive way and I'm happy I was able to produce a spread that conveyed my initial ideas accurately. As a standalone spread, I'm very happy with the way it turned out, but when placed in comparison to the previous two pages I've created, I believe I lose a lot of the style consistency I had previously built up. This spread as a whole is very overcrowded and that's due to how much detail I've packed into the pages. While the previous two pages do look busy, this page unfortunately feels messy. There's almost too much going on and the details I've intended to portray become overshadowed by excessive annotations and ink smudges. I wouldn't be as critical about this page if it weren't for what I'd previously produced. While I'm conflicted by the messiness of this page, it could also be a representation of the author's very quick descent into madness. The contrast between manageable and overbearing in just the flip of a page could be used as a very good portrayal of his mental state and if I play into this in future pages, the messiness I once hated would become intentional.
Ideas and concepts for the sketches and doodles produced by the author’s friends:
Trial annotations I produced using the software Procreate. These annotations were used to test the placement of the writing on the page.
Written text included in the spread:
“Standard deviation: (memorise the tables)
(Determine if differences in data are due to change)
- Overlap in results indicates the difference in means are due to change or are not significant. When overlap doesn’t occur it means the difference in results are significant or are not due to change.
T - test = difference between two means:
Paired t-test compares means and standard deviations of two related groups, used to determine significant difference between the two groups.
Heart rate before and after exercise is a good example of this.
Unpaired t-tests compare the means of two independent of unrelated groups. Paired t-tests are considered more powerful than unpaired tests because using the same participants eliminates variations between the samples that could be caused by anything other than what’s being tested.
T-test differences: t-test ( n1 + n2 ) where n1 = number of samples in data set 1 and n2 = number of samples in data set 2.
Paired t-test n1 ( where n = number of samples )”
Annotations:
-"cells are currently controlled
-Maybe I've been focusing on the wrong things, no wonder my results aren't enough.
-should have the same code..it is an organism?
-Oncogenes control the cell division. need to manipulate the timing, quicker the better
-update blueprints, exits and camera location. Night watch shifts have been changed
-order under fathers name from now on.
-He's enabled this
-(DNA) Why didn't I try this to begin with? If I combine the DNA with a bacteria cells, I'll have an unlimited supply of replica strands
-I'll obtain every result possible.
-Results are currently displaying pro-oncogene. I need more control. more."

Poster Development Part 5:
References used for the background and journal page:
Outcome:
Reflection:
I definitely believe that throughout the production of this project, I managed my time very poorly. While I had started the first part of this project almost two weeks ago, I had not made any significant progress towards completion until the day of the project submission. This caused a lot of unnecessary stress as I was rushing to fit in the entire project in just under eight hours. While I think what I completed in the time I had is a solid outcome, I do feel like I missed a lot of details that could have been included if I had allocated more time towards this piece.
I am content with the overall outcome of this poster and the fact that I was able to include the three main components of my initial ideas into the final design. The newspaper, mug and journal spread provide a lot of crucial details about the overall subject of my project and they express everything they need to. But what makes me disappointed about this piece is the background. I spent the majority of my time focusing on the main part of this poster that I had neglected to include any details in the background. With the time I had left before the poster needed to be submitted, I knew that I would have nowhere near enough time to even approach starting anything new. So the background was left blank and I was only able to include a wooden texture to mimic a desk. I was really unhappy that this was all I was able to produce in the time I had and I didn't like how much the wood texture stood out in comparison to what I had originally produced. So to make the background and foreground blend more seamlessly with each other, I shaded the corners of the whole piece to make the background appear darker and this allowed for the newspaper, mug and journal to stand out more than they did previously.
While the outcome I produced for this project is good as is, going forward in the future, I need to allocate myself more time, especially for larger projects like this, otherwise I will become hung up on the work I wasn't able to produce, rather than what I was actually able to accomplish. More flexible time management will also allow for less stress when facing upcoming deadlines.

Poster Development Part 4:
Reflection:
I really like the way this newspaper turned out and I'm happy with how cohesive each section is when placed together. The positioning of the information in the article was really hard to decide on. The newspaper is at an angle, with the majority of the right-hand side being off screen. This meant that I had to be very specific about the information I displayed so that it would be understandable despite there only being half of the information in view. I definitely think I could've been a lot more clever about the display of the article, but I worked around the problem of limited view in a very lazy way by making the text fit specifically to the space I had. If this paper were to be placed vertically, the text wouldn't make sense and I wish I had allocated more time for this section of the poster to allow for the newspaper's positioning to be more accurate.
I had initially planned to have the box in the top left hand corner of the paper display a headshot of the owner of the company Inde-cy, which I had previously mentioned had been taken into custody in the article. But what made me decide against this was the fact that I wanted the monster that would be displayed in the journal to be highlighted more thoroughly in the newspaper. The headline 'monster uncovered' wasn't enough information alone and the entry also doesn't give enough descriptive detail for the viewer to understand what the monster looks like. So instead of a headshot, I added a grainy and low quality drawing to stand as an indicator of what the monster roughly looks like.
Article written on the news paper:
“Scandal surrounding Fiato family founders of cytology company INDE-CY alleged abuse of funded resources and involvement with human experimentations. Could this be the end of the once renounced company? Fiato head currently in custody. Authorities haven’t ruled out the entire family’s involvement. Heir to the company Niccolò V Fiato has not been sighted since the company’s breakthrough. Friends and associates claim radio silence from the young man and have been unable to gain information regarding his whereabouts for over a month now. The involvement of foul play is still unknown.”

Poster Development Part 3:
Reflection:
I'm very conflicted about the outcome of the mug I produced for the poster. The shape, rendering and dimensions present in the mug are all aspects I'm very happy about. The mug feels very real and I'm happy I was able to achieve that in the time I had. I used a mug I had lying around the house as a guideline for the shape of the mug and I referenced an image I found on Google for the shading and rendering. Overall, I'm really content with the way the base of the mug turned out. I think I struggled mostly on the shading of the inside of the mug and I don't feel I was able to portray it as accurately as I wanted to. Even in the final piece, it feels very flat and I wish I had gone back over that section of the mug to improve on it further. The writing on the mug is what ruins this piece for me. The writing is used to represent the name and slogan of the company Inde-cy, which is prevalent throughout the journal and provides relevant information to the poster. While it provides additional context, I'm not happy with the way it turned out. I really struggled to get the words to wrap around the mug and I feel that when placed on the mug, I had initially drawn, it ruins the illusion of dimension I had worked so hard to create.

Receipt created for the third page in my journal:
The third page in my journal is set up to be produced while in a coffee shop and I wanted to create a receipt that I could include in the page to reflect that.
I made this receipt quite quickly after searching what the standard format for receipts provided by cafes normally looks like. I used Winter Newton Black Ink and a dip pen for the writing and a scrap of regular printing paper as the base. While the outcome is solid enough and provides additional context to the page, I wish I had found a different texture of paper to apply the design to.
I referenced how I shorthand coffee orders at my own job in the item section of the receipt and used similar pricing to what I'm familiar with under the cost section.
Ideas and development for the sketches and doodles produced by the author's friends on the third page of the journal:
Completed design:
The graphite pencil doodles represent the author's friend Cassian. I made the sketches rougher and messier and tried to fill up as much space as I could with his drawings to present his character as being more carefree and to show that he’s not afraid to take up space. The ballpoint pen represents another one of the author's friends, Beatrice. I made her doodles more delicate and used lighter line weight in her writing and sketches. I wanted her doodles to be smaller but still have a lot of presence on the page, so I tried my best to make the flowers have a more finished look in comparison to the sketchiness of Cassian’s drawings. The black marker represents the author of the journal. I really like how thick the line weight is in comparison to his friend’s drawings, as his writing and comments stand on the page despite how overcrowded it may be.
Progress:
I created these sketches below while watching season 6 episode 7: Food Chain of Adventure Time. This episode goes into detail and provides information about how the food chain works. It takes us through every stage, turning the main characters Finn and Jake into each crucial part of the chain. What stood out to me the most was the bacteria section of the episode. Finn was used to represent how the bacteria develop and feed before evolving into the next step in the food chain. I really liked how expressive Bacteria Finn is drawn and how overexaggerated the expressions are while using a very simple base.
I took inspiration from these expressions and very roughly drew my own interpretation, plus additional faces following the style used in this episode.
Screenshots from the episode that I used as reference:
This was the expression I ended up using in the journal:
Worksheet and workbook layout concepts:
Doodles referencing Molly and Eli’s original characters and a concept design for a creature I created back in 2023:
Journal Page 3 Development
I created small sketches on the bottom left hand corner of the page portraying the author's depiction of his friends through quick, stylised drawings.
While I like the stylisation of the first sketch I produced on the right, I felt that it looked very unbalanced when placed alongside the sketch on the left and I was unhappy with how the proportions of the two drawings, when put together, turned out.
I also tried to create a bigger sketch using crosshatching of the author's friend, but I felt that the amount of detail didn’t fit into the setting of the page, considering these sketches are intended to have been produced quickly, while also in a public setting.
I erased the two sketches I started on the right and replaced them with the drawing shown below. I’m a lot happier with the composition of the page after changing the proportions and pose of the drawing and I’m a lot happier with the overall outcome. I definitely think my proportions are still lacking and I struggled to portray the correct perspective of the characters' poses through these sketches.
Finished sketches:
I'm happy with the overall layout of the page with these sketches included, but I definitely think they feel very out of place given the drawings I'd produced on the two previous pages. While the intention of these sketches is for them to be perceived as done quickly, the contrast in styles is still strikingly different.
