It’s the time of the season When love runs high In this time, give it to me easy And let me try with pleasured hands…
"Hey, why don't you come over?" -folkiisms
“Sounds perfect. Should I bring something to eat/drink?” - Sarah.
Joan chuckled and put her hand over her mouth. "I'm talking about you. Maybe you're my motivation," one corner of her mouth quirked up into a grin and, to distract herself, Joan pulled the ukulele that laid on the coffee table onto her lap. She strummed a few chords and tilted her head to one side, picking out another song. "Stars shining bright above you, night breezes seem to whisper 'I love you', birds singin' in the Sycamore tree, dream a little dream of me..."

“Sounds perfect. Should I bring something to eat/drink?” - Sarah.
“Hm…” Joan laughed on the other end of the receiver. “How about some vodka? If you want to.”
“Of course I want to!” Sarah then absently smiled. “I’ll be over your place in 30 minutes.”
Joan wasn’t much for drinking, usually, but this was something else. “Alright, see you soon,” she said with a grin.“ She hung up the phone and began rushing around the empty apartment to fix herself up.
As soon as Joan hung up, she ran to her room, checking if she looked at least good. She combed her short, brown strands or hair, putting just a little bit of natural makeup and then putting on a fedora that his father gave her, along with a red blouse and black pants, using her comfortable and favorite shoes. She then went to see his brother, said goodbye to him, took a bag and taking in two vodka bottles, finally going out and walking towards Joan’s home, pretty excited about it.
Thank G-d Mimi wasn’t home today. Joan shared an apartment with her younger sister, who was off for a few weeks in Paris with her new boyfriend, Richard. This gave Joan a chance to get better acquainted with a new… whatever this was. She went around the living room and threw open the curtains, dusted her record player, and straightened up the guitars and dulcimers on their stands.
After half an hour, Sarah was at the door, nervously straightening her clothes before knocking the door, with a slight feeling of anxiety. What will happen when Joan opens her door? No-one knows. “Shit, I forgot my wallet…”
Joan smiled sweetly at Sarah, gesturing for her to come inside. The hallway outside Joan’s apartment smelled fresh; inside it smelled like cigarettes, Pine Sol, and old books. She lived in a brownstone in the center of Palo Alto, California, a place that reminded her a lot of her beloved Greenwich Village. “Hey hey, no problem,” the woman said smoothly, “if we go somewhere, I gotcha.” She winked and nudged Sarah. “Sit anywhere you like. I’ll go get some glasses so we can crack open these bottles.”
Sarah’s lovely smile brightened as she saw Joan doing the same thing, she got into her apartment, the fresh smell of it relaxing her. She then looked over to Joan, grinning lightly and nodding. “Okay, I’ll sit over here”. Shen walked towards the couch, sitting down with her legs a bit spread. As she waited for the lovely Joan come with the glasses, she closed her eyes, her head throwing back on the couch.
Fishing two glasses out of the cupboard, Joan hummed a little song to herself which eventually turned into singing. Her voice dipped and flowed soulfully, a voice rarely heard to outside ears. She hadn’t gotten over her extreme stage fright quite yet. “How long since I’ve spent a whole night in a twin bed with a stranger, her warm arms all around me…” The words came to her without a second thought. Joan carried the glasses back into the living room, singing as though Sarah wasn’t even there. “How long since I’ve gazed in the dark eyes that melted my soul down, to a place where it longs to be…”
As Sarah heard that charming voice after such a long while, her blank expression turned into a warm smile, then lifting her gaze to meet her eyes when she came in the living room. “Such a beautiful voice you have. You still haven’t gotten over the stage fright?” She kept gazing at the girl, she was so cute in an unique way.
Joan blushed a deep red, a lithe hand brushing long black locks out of her face. She cast her eyes down to the coffee table and sat in the chair across from Sarah. She was too shy to open a bottle yet, perhaps that would come after a minute of chatter. "Not yet... I think I need motivation. And who knows, maybe I have it now." Her voice trailed off in a sing-song tone, happy grin pushing onto her lips.
i don’t understand how human beings who have interacted closely with animals can believe that we are the only intelligent and worthy creatures on this earth like the first time i ever touched a cow and stared into her eyes i cried for the rest of the field trip and decided i wanted to spend my future owning a hobby cow farm. how can you touch an animal and not feel their emotions radiate through you? how can you desensitize yourself to their needs and their desire to enjoy life fully. i actually feel so empty because i don’t have a pet in my life (besides my roommates rats) because i am my best self when i am in the presence of an animal and can dedicate my time and energy towards caring for and nurturing them. it makes me feel sick to my stomach when people pride themselves on being able to capture or hurt animals, people who hunt and race animals. it is so frustrating to explain to my family again and again who they are affecting just because they want to eat something they think tastes good. i am so frustrated. i have always felt an enormous bond with animals. once i went to a birthday party at a petting zoo and they had an enormous buffalo there and i was so overcome with emotion i sobbed and held my hand on the buffalo for the rest of the party while everyone went off in different directions. i felt so sad that it was trapped and forced to live in a cage. its eyes looked so sad like he has given up. he was so huge, the largest animal i had ever seen yet he looked so gentle and docile and loving. i had dreams for years about rescuing that buffalo. i have always felt like i can understand the emotions of the dogs that i’ve owned. no matter what the dogs in our household have always chosen me as their #1 and i have always felt like i can communicate with touch and sound and eye contact with them in a very special and sincere way. i guess i might be crazy but i just think that animals are capable of so much more than we give them credit for and that they put so much trust in us not to hurt them and we betray them over and over. i wish i had the resources to rescue another dog right now, someday soon i will adopt a retired racing greyhound and i think about it every day. animals are so amazing, intelligent, loving & perceptive! animals are not food, animals are our friends!!! its so cheesy but its so true! animals in captivity are suffering…. i am going to be a lifelong vegan
Cassidy this is so beautiful…
I have always felt the same way, I spent my whole life traveling in central America and spent a year living in Costa rica, I felt such a deep connection to all that animals that I met, and became vegetarian at age 9 because I didn’t understand why the animals were murdered for food. It’s a shame that animals are viewed as food by a majority of the population rather than living, breathing beings, that have feelings and different personalities. I will never understand how people can see animals as entertainment and food, go see animals in circuses and zoos, and not think there’s something wrong with that. It warms my heart when people ask me for advice on becoming vegan, documentaries and websites to visit, and when people tell me I encouraged them to be vegan :’) Animals are on the planet with us, not for us and I wish people could see that.

Something tells me you want to save the world, well become a doctor, don't be one of those people who end up homeless because they thought saving the world would involve a busted untuned guitar. Get over yourself.
okay now lemme tell you something
i heard a story once, it was probably on one of those shitty facebook posts, but basically there’s this storm on a n island and all these starfish washed up on the beach. this woman’s going through and tossing some back into the ocean. a guy comes up and is like, “what’s the point, there’s so many starfish, you’re not doing anything to help.” so she picks up one, throws into the sea, and goes, “i did for that one.”
in 1963, bob dylan, joan baez, pete seeger, and many other musicians gathered at the march on washington with martin luther king. there they performed songs like blowin’ in the wind, we shall overcome, etc. you can watch it on youtube, but the sight of seeing thousands of people gathered together to sing along to songs of fight and freedom is truly an inspiring thing. when they boycotted the buses at selma, they sang ain’t gonna let nobody turn me round. when they boycotted the drafts for vietnam, they sang i ain’t marching anymore. music is an integral part of any social movement. it’s like singing a sports anthem before a match. it gives a community feel, it brings rapport and energy, it gives you the courage to go forth.
music is a universal language. you don’t need to speak english to understand that a song is sad or happy. i believe that if you want to get a message out to people, the best way is through music. and just look at all the great protest singers we had in the 60s - woody & arlo guthrie, pete seeger, phil ochs, joan baez, bob dylan, odetta, buffy sainte marie, etc. i’m pretty damn sure a helluva lot of people joined these movements simply because these musicians allowed topics like racism, war, greed, injustice etc to be brought to the public attention.
and some people might say that me being a protest singer and singing these songs won’t solve anything, but i disagree. everything you do has an effect on the world around you, no matter how small. and sometime a big mountain is moved because of very small pushes that have built up.
