ROMANIA: E-an-na
E-an-na is hard to characterise and addictive to listen to. Here's what they say about themselves on their website:
"Humankind bows to pieces of paper or plastic, without which life cannot mannifest itself anymore. Surrounded by so many wrongs moral and life values, raised to undeserved ranks, we chose as such: if this world is not enough for us, then we shall find a new one. This is how E-an-na has been born. Or, at least, this is how we unveiled it. E-an-na is a realm of ours, towards which we left, foreseeing the ending in this world. A realm where breath is still green. In which birds sing tirelessly and rivers don’t have unnatural colours. A home of the sky."
They're definitely a surreal band for me, but a very good one. Let them continuously surprise you!
AUSTRALIA: Southeast Desert Metal
Not exactly folk metal, but I have a family member who was a substitute player for these guys, so of course they're my pick for Australia. ABC has called them "the most isolated touring band in the world", and they write some fantastic stuff about Arrernte culture. Check them out!
TOGO: Arka'n Asrafokor
Starting off with an African band, and one I already really like! Arka'n Asrafokor are often called Togo's only metal band. Their lyrics are in Ewe, French and English. In addition to guitars and drums, they make use of the gankogui (a local cowbell), axatse (a percussive shaker), Evù drums, djembe as well as the West African talking drum.
