I keep seeing people call FFIX “lighthearted” and ??????

I’m pretty sure there’s more mass genocide in that game than in most of the other Final Fantasies. Plus one of the major questions the game poses is “what is the value of life?”  Um. 

You see Garnet’s mother die.Cleyra is wiped off the map. Burmecia is sacked. Alexandria is torn apart. Lindblum is brought to its knees. Hundreds of black mages fall by your own hand, and many more by their short lifespans. An entire world is destroyed. Garland dies. Vivi possiblydies. Kuja possibly dies. 

Vivi’s grandfather wanted to eat him. Freya’s lover can’t remember who she is, and by the end she doesn’t love him anymore, even if he her wants to. An entire race of people (the summoners) were wiped out. Garland has produced a bunch of “soulless” bodies and Gaia is a parasitical vessel for Terra. 

Having a cute-sy artstyle doesn’t make it cutsie.
