it's probably bc a lot of the fans (now) are only watching skam bc they fetishize gay relationships (u can tell bc a lot of the fans are straight girls who ONLY consume media if it has a gay (male) relationship) and men and so they would rather a season about a hot guy than a season about a really interesting character.
