Common Nutritional Deficiencies Quail Game-birds Poultry
My two hens sitting in the wall planter found someone to lay them an egg whilst we were away and here is the result - hatched this morning. The funny thing is she/he looks exactly like them!

One of the joys of going back home to Scotland is seeing all the family - including these two and what could be better than a family dinner.
Every home should have some!
Scott the Silkie to the rescue! Web forming Ermine Moths are beautiful creatures but they are also extremely destructive in the larval form. In a forest garden normally this is no problem, as with the amount of vegetation there is food for all and the leaves easily grow back. However, this year the moths have been prolific and their caterpillars are everywhere in the hawthorn trees and the wild birds can't keep up.
Broody hens never cease to amaze me in their quest for motherhood but these two outdid all others with their ability to squeeze into a wall planter and sit on a wooden egg. So much so, in fact that if they hatch a wooden chicken, I won't even raise an eyebrow. Love from France, Sue xx
Tuxedo Quail - Dress to impress!
Sharing details on how I choose a hen for hatching and raising quail and ideas for making a safe nest for the chicks and one which also helps the mother deal with such tiny eggs. This has been a bit of a roller-coaster journey but as usual, there is a lot to learn and that is all to the good.

Heading back towards sunny days, we've turned the corner! One of my favourite photos - Stansilas our White-laced Chamois bearded and crested Polish rooster/cockerel. You can see in his face just how lovable he is. Much love, Sue and Andy xxx
The adorable English White & Panda Quail, you've got a (garden) companion, slug-eater, fearless free-ranger and friend for life. Much love from Normandie, Sue and Andy xxx

The beautiful and adorable Golden quail - an in depth look at this fascinating bird and why it also has the name Isabelle/Isabela.

Recipe Buns Baby Hedgehog Enriched Organic Dough
Fun to make and totally delicious served warm with raw butter. Inspired by these lovely creatures, I decided to make hedgehog-shaped buns but unlike the plain ones sometimes sold at our local bakery, I'm going to fill them with a mixture of nuts and fruit.
Enjoy!
