UPDATE: The missing runner has been found alive and in surprisingly fair health! I heard he walked up to the Search and Rescue personnel who were by the El Dorado Creek bridge - it's a few miles down the WS trail from Michigan Bluff. The weather has been far from ideal with snow falling in the area, which makes his survival (and ability to find SAR himself) that much more impressive. So so so relieved...a big thanks to all involved in the rescue effort.
It would be interesting to know more about how he made it through the elements (two cold nights with snow while only wearing shorts and a light windbreaker). Nevertheless, this is one tough dude. May he make a speedy recovery!
Missing Runner - A Safety Reminder
*Yesterday, a runner went missing during a training run on the Western States Trail between Michigan Bluff and Devil's Thumb - also known as the canyons. He was last seen by his group around 9am. He is a slower runner, so it seems he was left to go at his own pace, but when the group returned to the start (the run is an out and back), they realized he was missing. Since he was left behind on the way out, they should have come across him at some point after the turn-around if he was still on the correct trail.
Search and Rescue are continuing their efforts today, but the idea of spending a night out there and more is worrisome. Even though there were quite a few running groups on that section yesterday, nobody can confirm seeing him after 9am, so it is very likely he took a wrong turn off-trail.
A nightmare situation. It's definitely a safety reminder for the whole running community. Hoping he is found soon...until then, he will be in my thoughts.
*Updated 4/1 - runner found alive :D
