summer on the lake
It seems easy to lose interest.
Seems there is a good amount out there that have never even had it.
It could be the result of a Zeitgeist to which one has never really subscribed, or simply lethargy.
Whatever it is, you gotta hope it makes you.
Hones, hewn and turns you, till you are tight inside.
And ready to unwind when the time strikes.
It can be a simple night.
A path not crossed twice, or made timeless, so already entwined.
It simply resides, as some bad existences of life
A consistency one finds themselves rather to not define
Torn between oneself and that other side
It’s not within the comprehension of mind.
And it can take a body, with a redwing wrapped casket
And vodka gimlets
At the bowling alley
To find a slip of family
It only leaves you to think
What is it to me?
Pick apart these faces
Looking for a piece
Eyes, ears, a nose?
High cheekbones?
Phylum deciphering in all the wrong places
Forgetting nothing is ever a simple defining.
Left behind
In yellows, browns
And variations of lime
Overcast skies
And tight neighbored homes
Heavy feet upon their floors
Heavy sighs behind each door
Another winter like the one before
Anticipation past over
In the midst of Michigan Architecture
A turn of leaves And patterned fields In the low fog That hugs these hills Habit building homes Wrapped in vinyl Or laid out in aluminum Sit squat To the silos And old wood barn Trucks parked up in the yard Meant to mimic the monuments housing sacrements The priests read out loud Just more stories about Relationships Bent birches Mud puddles and complacents Arguments over authorship Of emotions A forest thick But go by too quick Passed trees Once not worth cutting down Now grown in around But there’s sun behind each cloud
I think of eating fresh almonds. Prying the green skin with red mud beneath my nails. I chewed them then - the nails. The almonds I barely savored a bite.
I didn’t know you then, Though you still would not have liked me. Detesting me even more, for my youth and vigor, Having found me. Drunk, in a dirt field. The sun long up, and the day progressed past eight. I remember sprawling myself out large on rooftops. No fear to the drop on either side, “Anything for the stars”, I would have likely said, Had anyone asked, or could translate. I smoked a lot. Took tea, sometimes espresso, in the morning. But never coffee. And I still wrote in a scratch Only I could read. Nothing to keep from hindering my secrecy. A quilt for so many reasons … Afraid I’d lack depth. Expose my self as inept. Give way to too much, That I just could never get back. Why could I not have stayed Upon those sun bleached hovel-like homes? Have lost myself somewhere between those dry rocks? “What a tragedy, she’s gone”, Townsfolk’d recall. Another sad faced girl, At the heart of it all. Still naiive to the world And its want for your fall.
Instead the frown stayed, Frozen, placidly, in place. Instead time played Its cruel joke, On another almost pretty face.

Joe Heaps Nelson
Sep 16, 1968 - Apr 16, 2018
During his times in the hospital, Joe created collages from the magazines he found and sent the images to friends. Here’s a collection of collages he sent me from 2015 to 2017. Nothing could take away his sense of humor and whimsy. Joe played with familiar flyover state themes of advertising distorted down-home ideals and “all-Americanness”, ever sprinkled with the absurd. These collages are a little more all over the place, being from found resources, but they carry his signature comedic tone, his vitality of color, and his bold composition.
Though he may not be with us any longer, his friendship and the light and laughter he brought to so many will always be. RIP
