The History of Snapbacks

Snapback hats first came on the scene in the late 1950’s. Snapbacks were created by New Era Cap Company, a headwear company founded in New York in 1920. New Era created the hats for the Cleveland Indians, and then later the rest of the Major League baseball teams. The hats grew in popularity, and New Era innovated the design, going from 8- to 6-panel caps, which is the design of the modern snapback today. 

The hype died down in the 1970s, and the hats were almost forgotten until hip hop legends like Tupac Shakur, Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, music groups like N.W.A. and Mobb Deep, and actors like Will Smith popularized it again in the 90s. Pretty soon, it became one of the most iconic trends of the era.

The snapback trend has evolved and changed through the years, and thousands of designs exist, both from the New Era Cap Company and from other clothing brands. It remains a staple piece for hat lovers to this day.

"Most people grow up associating the words King & Queen with Charles & Elizabeth. I grew up being told of Pharaohs dark as night migrating across Africa going on to establish Kingdoms like the kingdom of Sine.

I heard stories of my Great grandfather Bour Sine Mahekor Diouf, the last king of Sine (a region in Senegal). He was hot tempered, very strong & unapologetically fearless.

Amongst all these things, his pride ran as deep as his skin was dark & if there was anything my people are known for, it is our unique blue black skin. He was an agent of change in Colonial Senegal & his beautiful rich skin of dark hues is not the only thing passed on to me. To be rooted is to establish one’s ancestors as foundation.

After Maad a Sine Mahekor Diouf passed, Sine became apart of the independent Senegal. I am Sérère, it rings in my name, cheekbones, skin & blood.
