The FNAF fandom isn't something I particularly engage in, but I've been a fan of the series of years. Putting theories aside for this post, I feel like there's something that's been on my mind lately, mainly the fandom's treatment of women characters. Today I want to talk about one in specific; Fiona Murray.
Fiona is an interesting character. A puppeteer, a designer, a woman who showed kindness and compassion to her husband's workers during hard times. She has a personality, you can see exactly so in those audio recordings and video reels left around Secret of the Mimic. She died tragically and yet there were so many things to carry on her legacy.
However, the fandom has a horrible problem of reducing Fiona to only a few things; a wife, a mother, an accessory, something that an AI started to mimic due to a man's grief. In my observation, when Fiona is brought up by fandom, it's only really for a few things
In passing, when the post is clearly about different characters, usually the men (Edwin Murray included)
In regards to the Mimic and F10-N4 when the post has nothing to do with Fiona Murray herself
While some of this makes vague sense, I can't help but be frustrated that someone like Fiona is reduced to just.. This. The blatant mischaracterization of Fiona Murray, and disrespect to her name, runs rampant in the FNAF community. It also bothers me that most posts in Fiona's tags on this platform are actually about F10-N4, not Fiona Murray herself. Theorization aside, Fiona and F10-N4 are two separate characters, the latter of which being an AI that happened to mimic the former after her untimely death. While arguments of their similarities can be made, it seems blatantly disrespectful in my opinion that most posts tagged with "#Fiona Murray" happen to be about an AI made by a grieving husband, and not the actual character who had that name.
All in all, I really think the fandom should reevaluate how the FNAF fandom treats their women characters, Fiona being no exception. I don't think a person like her should be reduced to what she has been reduced to, and it disheartens me that she, along with many many other girl characters in this franchise, are rarely talked about, overshadowed by characters like William and Michael and Henry. Fiona, and the other girl characters of FNaF, really shouldn't be reduced to what they have been
