❝ Uh… I don’t know? ❞ He was watching both Seven and the snake closely, wanting to make sure that the snake wasn’t let out of it’s cage anytime soon since snakes were something he was always scared of. Prompto was watching Stripes closely since the snake was still on Seven’s shoulders.

“He’s fake.” Seven reminded, having built the robotic snake knowing that neither brother was going to let him keep a large snake ever, and kept Stripes looking robotic under the assumption it would soothe Prompto.

“He’s not even gonna touch you. It’s fine.”

Prompto nodded, just kind of glad he didn’t have to elaborate.  Explain himself.  He really didn’t know what he could do for Seven when it came right down to it, but to help him out a little right then?  Even if it seemed small and simple?  He’d totally try to do something.

The request was a little surprising, but it got a smile.  “Hey, no pressure, okay?  But someday, if you ever feel like it, my friends are totally cool.  I think you’d like them, and they’d like you.  I mean, one on one to meet and stuff so it’s not scary.  Well, Gladio’s a little scary, but that’s just kind of his thing.”  He was aware that he’d gone a little ways past rambling, stopping himself with a little cough.

There had to be something a little less overwhelming than meeting people, right?  “Mm, maybe… sunglasses?  So folks won’t stare at your eyes, I mean.  Or comb your hair in front of your face, I guess.”

“I think I’d be okay with meeting your friends soon...”

Though Gladio seemed to make him wary, just what kind of guy was he? If he had heard correctly wasn’t his brother also best friends with the Lucian Prince?

“I’ll...Figure something out, but before I meet your friends I want be sure they know just what exactly I am. I’m sure they’ll be nice to me eventually, but it's only right for them to be cautious too. You can tell them that self destruct permissions are disabled though.”

He chuckled at his sad attempt for a joke even though it was true, silently knowing that it was, unfortunately, a hazard as well if he became to injured down the line.

It wasn’t so much Seven’s words that made his palms sweat, made his hands feel clammy at the same time; the ideas were responsible for that.  It was like how, every once in a while, he got the thought in his head, the very vivid mental image of an MT with their mask blown off, revealing a real face underneath, revealing–

Prompto took a moment to breathe.  Bad as that was, it didn’t come close to the thought of Seven… reverting?  Not being himself.  Being erased.  The shell of what used to be him possibly hurting people.

Hands balling into fists for a moment, Prompto took in another breath and let it out slowly.  “I know I can’t make promises or anything like that.”  He paused to laugh a little, sounding far too grave.  “But if I’m… around… I’ll do everything I can for you.”  That sounded so useless having said it out loud, hadn’t it?

“Thanks, brother.”

Even if it was an unrealistic promise it still put Seven at ease, glad that they had found each other.

“Honestly if you could just help me be less...Afraid of other people that will help a lot too. I know I’m paranoid about well...A lot of things, but needing to blend in and appear ‘normal’ is pretty important.”

He had already gotten in the constant habit of covering up his arm, but there wasn’t a thing he could do about his eerie red eyes. Seven could only hope no one would notice these days.

"You ever, um." He almost stopped himself there. Almost. Pushing forward almost took physical effort. "You ever have nightmares? Like. You ever dream about never getting to be yourself?" About the terror of being trapped there, where they were intended to be, doing what they were intended to do. The /idea/ was starting to give Prompto shallow breathing and a faster pulse. He couldn't ask more. He couldn't.

“The only nightmares I have are of our brother begging to be set free...” That one haunted him on a regular basis, even though he knew the likelyhood of any of them becoming self-aware like he and Prompto were was quite low. But going back to the labs was out of the question, and even then the most merciful thing he could do was to shut it all down. 

“But I do know that if I’m injured enough I will likely lose myself, core programming just takes over...”

Sighing as he looked down at his metal arm that was more often than not a hassle to keep in shape, he couldn’t help but to be a bit jealous of how normal Prompto was, but all the same, was lucky he could hide all his obvious MT parts.

Okay, yeah, maybe the thought of a snake shedding its skin was a little much, if only because he really didn’t want to imagine a daemon doing that, but…  Well.  It was as close as he’d been to a snake without squealing or having to kick it off his boot and run, so… that was progress.

“A-ah, well.  I mean.  I don’t wanna go out and hug all he snakes, but… it’s not too bad?  Like, I don’t think it’s going to eat me.  And probably not bite me in my sleep.”  Okay, yeah, he needed to stop talking or he was going to come up with more awful scenarios.

But Prompto did definitely perk up at the mention of chocobos.  “Mm, I guess you wouldn’t want to go to a ranch, right?  Too many people.  There some good open ground here without a lot of rocks?”  Noctis wasn’t going to be too mad that his whistle temporarily went missing; or at least he didn’t think so.  Just “misplaced”, to be returned later, and the guys were totally enjoying a hotel and a little town with a diner anyway.

“I mean...If we’re together then I should be okay with a small crowd?”

Prompto would watch out for him at least. They could just be a pair of ordinary twins, not clones, and definitely not MTs. It was only when he was alone when he got quite cautious and paranoid about others trying to cut him down...

“Besides I kinda have to get used to people more if I wanna blend in the first place and learn how to be ‘normal’. This war won’t last forever, so I have to plan for that I guess?”

“Must be lonely…” Noctis couldn’t really imagine himself alone from everyone. Alright, he could given his lonely childhood but it was more like he couldn’t fathom having no choice but to separate himself from other people.

“Even if you’re an MT, you’re still kinda like my best friend’s brother so you’re always welcomed in my group.” Luckily major injuries weren’t common, usually it was Gladiolus who took the heavy blows anyway. “Ya know, if we’re ever on the job together since we kinda have to hunt around.”  

“Did...You miss that part about safety?” Seven immediately questioned, quite taken by surprise by the sudden offer, especially since it was someone he just met.

Fidgeting for a moment as he thought it over, the clone then sighed and shook his head.

“I may not have loyalty to the Empire, but I do have loyalty to General Tummelt. If you cross his path on the battlefield then I’m obligated to take his side.”

Yeah okay, he was still kind of not as excited about the experience, getting ready to jump at anything the moved in the grass, but… well, Seven was getting to be kind of an expert in this stuff, right?  So it’d be okay.  Hopefully.

Prompto nodded, only too glad to stay put and not move toward any more snakes, but he really couldn’t help but zero in on the one being brought closer.  It was terrifying!  And it was horrible!  And it…

Was really tiny, actually.  And not… super deadly-looking…  Oh.  Well he definitely wouldn’t have jumped to hold it or anything, but… looking at it wasn’t so bad.  “I guess it… it’s sorta fine.  You know.  For a snake.”  He joked, feeling a little more relaxed that he expected.

And then just a little bit curious.  “So what’s it… feel like?  I mean they’re not… slimy like worms, right?”

“A little scaley more than anything else I guess, though I’ve yet to be around one that just shed its skin.”

He had only read about such habits rather than seeing it up close. Perhaps if he ever settled down enough to keep a snake or two as pets he would be lucky. Knowing that Prompto had no desire in trying to hold the snake Seven gently released him back where he found him

“I hope that was at least a baby step in the right direction. Now you said something about chocobos?”

“Yeah…I’m pretty sure they wanna do the same to my friend…” That sounds frightening already, to die just because someone didn’t approve of you or because you were deemed ‘defected’. 

“I don’t do anything to anyone unless they come after me first, and you didn’t chase me around in a ship overhead like all the other MT’s do.” Sure, Noctis could have summoned his weapons if he was paranoid, but he could never do that to someone who was clearly innocent in all this. “As long as you don’t try to live in Nifleheim or follow their orders, you’re a citizen of Insomnia to me.” 

“I see...”

It was fairly understandable at least, though still couldn’t help but to worry about Loqi considering if it came down to it he would accept orders from his reliable brother.

“Well at the very least I can promise I don’t plan on going anywhere near the Empire, but considering I am half MT at this point I can’t really promise anything else. If I’m heavily wounded I may just lose all logic and reasoning. That’s pretty much why I tend to keep to myself.”

“Yeah, I am.” He gets it, Noctis doesn’t exactly carry the air of a prince when he walks around nor does he even speak much like a royal. He gets any surprise, it only makes sense after all. 

“Unless you work for Nifleheim, I wouldn’t do anything to you.” Shoulders give off a shrug, running his fingers through his messy black hair. “Yeah…His name’s Prompto and he’s my best friend.” He’d have a picture right now if he could but it was Prompto who had a love of photography. 

“The Empire wants to ‘dispose’ of me just like they did with the rest of the defective units. I promise I have nothing to do with them.”

Loqi was the only one he could trust from the Empire, but even then he took his brother’s word that he would not be dragged into the war against his will. 

“Thanks for not shooting me or anything...You know, being an MT and all.”

It was a nervous whisper, but the Prince didn’t seem armed at all, or even startled, and that was enough to ease him.

“It’s alright, I just didn’t think that…I’d ever even find someone like you.” It was awkward, painfully awkward. He has to wonder just how many MT’s escaped in their life before or after Prompto did as a baby? Clearing his throat, Noctis rubbed the back of his neck when blue eyes continued to look at the blond. “I’m um…I’m Noctis.” He could surely tell he wasn’t working for Nifleheim at least. If he was, he would surely try to kill him…right?

“The...Lucian Prince?”

It had been a name he had heard several times in passing, both in and outside the Empire. Sure there was no proof that the man before him was royalty, but doubted he would have any reason to lie.

“I mean if that’s the case then I guess I don’t have to worry about you turning me over to the Empire. You were looking for someone, does that mean I have another brother somewhere?”

Still a little concerned over Seven’s safety, it wasn’t like Prompto was going to insist he do anything he wasn’t comfortable with.  He’d obviously stayed safe and survived that long, but trying not to worry was another thing.

The perfect photograph waited for no man, or at least that served as reason enough to get back to the spot as soon as he could, careful to change up his walking path a little just to be sure.  Not like he thought he was being followed or spied on, but it didn’t seem like a completely paranoid thing to do, either.

But it did give him a little time to… come to terms with what he was going to do.  Snakes.  They still freaked him out, and certain daemons in particular super did not help, but he’d agreed.  And he wasn’t really regretting that, just–  Preparing himself.  For snakes.

So it was a little embarrassing when his voice broke twice upon greeting, “Yo, bro, ready to go?”

“Uh-huh.”

For once Seven was quite excited and found himself eagerly leading the way out of the outpost until they came across a suitable grassy area. 

“Alright you stay here for a minute and I’ll see if I can find some harmless little snakes around.”

Getting to the ground level he hoped there would be some harmless little garden snakes living around these parts, and smiled as he found one to gently scoop up and present it to his brother.

“See? Small and harmless, has its own little job in gardened areas. I won’t make you hold it.”

“Hey, Prompto! Where the hell were-” Suddenly his blue eyes look surprised to the blond with such a familiar face yet Noctis could tell right away this wasn’t his friend. Of course Noctis and the others knew by now the truth of Prompto’s forgotten past even he was too young to ever remember, but he definitely didn’t think there was another who could escape like him. 

“…You’re um…definitely not Prompto…” He mutters, trying to think of what to even say to him given how much of a struggle first time social interactions were for Noctis.

Letting out a small yelp as the stranger approached him, Seven then cautiously stepped away as the other quickly realized he was not who he thought he was. He had always dreaded the idea of being found out he was anything close to an MT and being shot down for it at once, was this going to be one of those violent moments?

“Seven.” He answered softly, knowing that it was at least polite to introduce himself. “I’m sorry I’m not who you’re looking for.”
