Well, it was won partly at the first corner, but I think maybe even partly before that. The track surface was so cool and gripless, drivers were being asked to do as many as five burnouts—usually it’s two or three. Norris was so preoccupied about how Max was taking his time, forcing him to wait with his tires cooling, that he didn’t do the instructed five burnouts, he did three, and none of them were particularly aggressive, unlike Max’s five. It was as if he was distracted by Verstappen taking his time and he was irritated enough to be complaining about it on the radio, and that played a significant part in what happened at Turn 1. Yes, Norris ran wide, but the whole scenario would probably have been different if he’d got his rear tires as well prepared as Verstappen’s and got off the line better… This was won by Verstappen being perfect on an evening when neither Norris nor Russell were.
