A magical being, created “to be the best” at scaring people… but he’s not very good at it.

“Really? That’s cool, man. Nice to meet another magic user, I guess.” Pete gives the little guy a good-natured grin, even if it’s a little small. He still doesn’t entirely trust that he’s not hallucinating this weird little thing, but either way, he’s pretty good at rolling with it.

“Uh, what… …kind?” He rubs his neck, trying not to think about his last instance of magic usage, where he summoned a bunch of weird bugs into New York. “I dunno man, it’s… …it’s complicated. It’s sort of tied to my dreams and stuff. I thought you might know something about it, but it’s okay. I’m cool to just shoot the shit.”

He laughs at that last comment. “Okay, so you know what a puppet is, then? That’s basically what a Muppet is. But if you say you’re not one, I’ll take your word on that. So uh, what’s… …what’s your name?”

Being polite with weird little Not-Puppets. Just another day in the life.

“Oh... Well, I dunno about dreams dreams, but I guess there’s the Dream Oracle.” Does she even do any magic involving dreams? The Nightmare Knight probably could, with all his power, but Besty barely remembers any details about her. “And the Nightmare Knight -- and Steve!”

“Uh-huh,” he says, as if he understands that even remotely. “Why’s there two words for the same thing? That rhyme?”

Delighted to introduce himself, he momentarily rises up and tips his hat. “I’m Thebestmaster! Besty for short. What’s your handle, stranger?”

…Okay, they’re definitely not talking about the same thing. Pete has no idea who “those kids” are, and someone from Nod would probably know about his powers, come to think of it. He tries to hide his disappointment as best he can, and tries to count at least being 95% sure this li’l dude is real as a victory.

“Um… I guess I’m kind of like a wizard, yeah,” he settles on slowly. “I have these powers, but I don’t need a wand. It’s kind of a whole thing.”

He sighs. “Don’t worry about it, man. I thought–I see things sometimes, weird beings ‘n’ stuff, I thought you might… …be one of those. But I think we might be talking about different things.”

So much for finding out if the grey baby is okay.

“So, uh… …you’re real, right? Just checking.”

“Oh! Me too!” Besty says. “Magic without a wand, I mean. I’m not... Um, I don’t think I’m a wizard.”

He’s never really thought about it before, but it seems more like a Dreamsider word than one that Steve or the Nightmare Knight would use to describe themselves or anyone else from their world. He hasn’t really researched the term, because as far as he knows, people usually aren’t afraid of wizards.

...Oh, right, conversations. He should ask about the other person. “What kinda magic d’you do?”

“Huh?? I might look like a puppet, but I’m not actually one!” And he’s not even asleep this time -- that’s when people usually think he’s inanimate!

Pete blinks at the question, which seems so irrelevant in this moment. “It’s not important, I’ll–I’ll tell you later.” He doesn’t know where that promise came from, but it just kind of slips out.

“No? I… I don’t know, I don’t think so anyway. They’re just a grey baby. Y’know, black eyes and uh, stuff. No, I’m not from–I’m not from the dream realm, but I’m supposed to have like, powers from it or some shit? So that counts, right? Sort of?”

Okay, if he really were from that realm, he’d probably know Pete’s name. And it seems really weird that he wouldn’t know the grey baby, but he is talking about dreams, so…

“You’re from there, though, right? That’s why you’re here.”

Worth pressing the li’l guy a li’l more. Hey, at least if he’s a hallucination, he’s kinda silly-looking.

Besty barely acknowledges the reassurance about learning what a Muppet is; he was already halfway to forgetting the word altogether the second it came out of his mouth.

Powers from Dreamside...? Did he go and learn them there? “So you’re a wizard like those kids? Aren’t you supposed to have a wand or something?”

“I’m not FROM Dreamside, but I lived there a long time. What’s that have to do with me being in this place? People get here from all over, like wherever your human world is.”

Pete’s first reaction to this question is to get defensive and flustered, which is ridiculous, ‘cuz the puppet thing in front of him might not even be real. Sure, after talking to Glasses Guy (Indrid, he tried to remind himself) he knew that there were plenty of nonhuman beings here, too, but this is just a step too far into surreality and it makes him a little uncomfortable.

“What’s the deal with me?” He blurts out. “What’s the deal with you? You look like a Muppet.”

Oh shit, wait. Is this–is this the Vox Phantasma stuff coming back again? His stomach drops a little bit. “Wait, hold on, do you know the grey baby? Are they okay?”

He’ll process what this means vis a vis his powers later; right now, he needs to know if he can reach that baby.

“What’s a muppet,” Besty says blankly. This guy’s so weird! And he didn’t even answer the question.

“I don’t know any babies,” he says, frowning. “And I don’t...” Know any grey babies, that’s for sure, but a thought gives him pause. He does sort of know someone grey...? Not that he’s been a baby at literally any point in his life.

“D’you mean Mutemaster? But you’re not even a Dreamsider.” So they probably came here from whole different places, but this guy seems to be sure he knows something about Thebestmaster.
