He knows everyone is frustrated and pissed and scared and unsure, and Odin would be all of those things turned up to max if it weren’t for his level head. Him getting frustrated and snapping would just lead to more tensions, and the fact of the matter was, none of them needed that. Not now, anyway. Odin is prideful, sure, but he’d lived much of his life, biting his tongue. He can do it for a little while longer.
Truth be told, he’s not exactly thrilled to be spending his quiet time with Gil. The break was meant to be quiet; he needs the silence when the ship is so cramped full of them all, but he just puffs silently and doesn’t comment. Gil has as much right to be outside as Odin does.
Nodding, he tries to ignore the way Gil swats the smoke away, and it’s all Odin can do not to blow some of it right into the other’s face. Instead, he blows a few rings, watching them waft away, vanishing slowly, hopes that’s not a touch of condescension in Gil’s voice. (Truly, Odin might be imagining it. He and Gil haven’t really gotten along much, after all.)
What a loaded question, though, more loaded than a gun. Odin can’t tell Gil about the apparition. No one believed him back then; why will anyone believe him now? Odin is too proud to admit it; Gil wouldn’t understand, anyone. No one could; no one can. So Odin doesn’t say anything about that, about the apparition, about the whispers, about any of it. He just says, “I dunno. My brother got me started on it. Just a habit now, I guess.”
"…Why? You don’t w-want some, do y-you?"

he stands there in silence, no longer bothering to swat the smoke away. odin has him thinking ;
he’d been right all along, hadn’t he ? about titan ? about paradise ? about everything ?
in all honesty, gil’s hurt beyond belief, and suspects that no textbook is capable of providing
him with a cure for the thickening emotion lodged deep within his bones. arms fold across his
chest & he remains silent for a few minutes, allowing himself another glimpse at the other. gil watches as he puffs on his pipe, gaze following the rings, and he suddenly finds that he sees
odin in a more favorable light. he had offered him the pipe ; that counted as an act of peace,
right ? a truce, perhaps, for their rocky introduction... ?
he’ll take it. even if his manners are a bit...well, questionable.

another pause. a part of him has always wondered about SIBLINGS ; granted that all he ever
had as a child were his parents and his imagination. but that had been taken away from him
as well ---- he was stripped of a home, a family...he doesn’t remember them that much,
come to think of it, but he does remember the warm feeling of familiar love.
*& thank goodness for nevy. she was the only thing keeping him from being truly alone in
the universe.
