Hiya FoscX! Js a lil question for your characters, how would Rick Kostrov react if he was right in front of you (could be fic or irl) and he has all his memories along with knowing you're the one behind all those stories you've made for him that he had to live through, he also knows the good things you've made him live through like meeting FJ, would he react positively or negatively? Or probably both? And how would FJ also react knowing you're also his creator? (The question goes the same for the rest of the Kostrov Family, like Jake, Maggie, even Loretta and Ryan the dog I think, I forgot his name XD) You can always reject answering this if you want to, no pressure! I'd just like to know how they'd react knowing you're the one behind all their greatest stories from ups and downs 💛

Rick would 100% just kill me 😭 there are a few examples in the books about how he treats specifically people who have done some harm to his family, and usually he's not very forgiving :,) he's a bit of a grudge holder and I fully doubt, if he truly knew I was to blame for what happened to Loretta alone for example, that all the good things I also made him go through would make up for that ❤️‍🩹 He simply loved people around him too much to accept the tragedies that happened to them just because he still got to live a somewhat enjoyable life. He loved FJ and the kids but I don't think Rick has the capability of making peace with some fates.

FJ would probably also at least not want anything to do with me, not necessarily because of what happened to him but because of what happened to Rick during the accident :,) I truly think he would hate me the most for that and would not tolerate me lmao. He did go through some horrible things in his past but FJ did still get the "net positive" in a sense that he really loved his life after he met Rick. Rick also liked his life, but he was just way too traumatized to forgive it, but FJ was more capable of leading an ordinary life to hold much of a grudge in his later years. Still, Rick's accident nearly drove him mad and he'd be very annoyed at me about that ahahah and rightfully so

Jake would probably be my bestie haha. He hated his early childhood but he got the better end of the stick and had the best family later (with Rick and FJ). He was also, while cynical, generally a pretty positive person that tried to find meaning behind things, and in his adulthood, he had a much healthier mindset about his childhood than Rick did, for example. He would try to wrap his head around it and move on, he'd try to find reasons for certain situations.

Maggie would also probably want me dead hahaha for the same reason FJ would have, plus her mom. She didn't have as much trouble accepting and forgiving things as Rick did but she's a bit more rough around the edges and slightly more stubborn than he is, so she'd definitely not be on friendly terms with me :,) she'd argue I destroyed her life and she got the positives out of it anyway before she slams a fist in my face, and I'd deserve it.

Loretta is a very interesting case because I actually think she'd be understanding. Not necessarily because she's happy with how things have gone down (I'd get a knee to the gut at least for all the Rick horrors and having people scare her kid) but because of how many people Rick actually helped because he was angry enough about what happened to her, I think she'd be more forgiving. She always wanted to help others and wanted Grimport to change above all else, and her unfortunate situation did spark that change over the course of decades. She would also be happy about Jake and FJ and how Maggie grew up and everything, so I believe she'd take all the good that happened into consideration. I doubt she'd be my friend but she'd at least not totally hate me haha

Ryan would love me cause I'm yet to meet a dog I'm not besties with HAHA, i love dogs 🫂

TLDR; I am a horrible creator for all that I put them through and, while it makes a compelling story, it does not make for a forgivable life, and I would not blame any of them for wanting me as a piñata

Story rambling (harsh childhood discussion):

Rick struggled with a lot of different things, as you do once life becomes as troubled as Rick’s was. Among these things was his terrible insomnia, and it was one of the reasons why he struggled with drinking as much as he did later in life. Before he was in therapy, once he couldn’t live in his own head awake and nightmares took away his sleep, alternatives often seemed alluring, no matter how destructive they were.

A huge reason behind his bad sleep wasn’t even the Underground, but his late father Rostya. He was the one Rick so very often refused even acknowledging the existence of due to just how big of a stain he left on his life, the main perpetrator behind Rick’s restless nature and broken fight or flight instinct.

Rostya was a very frightening man, an extremely man1pulative person who, in a lot of ways, got destroyed by his own selfishness and decided to overpower the only thing he still had authority over – his own son. Across many years, he not only isolated Rick, but ensured him they were two pieces of the same puzzle. And Rostya was, above all, an extremely cruel, possessive man, and he broke Rick’s identity to the point that he couldn’t see himself as anything but a reflection of his father, just an extension of the most vile person he had ever known. It was Rostya’s treatment that eventually lead Rick to making the desperate decision that would change the course of his entire life.

Some way, somehow, throughout everything he had been through, Rick managed to collect a small circle of people that saw behind the lies his father and later even Kendle fed him. In a lot of ways, FJ simply making sure the rare hours of sleep Rick gets were spent in a safe, comfortable space helped heal bits and pieces of that shy, quiet kid who needed to change everything about himself to merely survive another day.

Hi hi, question: What advice do you have for rating a story, what advice do you have for doing research on weighty topics (mental health, oppression, abuse and such), do you have any websites you do your research on, and how do you approach avoiding mischaracterizing or belittling these issues?

Hey heyy 🐦‍⬛

I always like to refer people to the "make it exist first, you can make it perfect later". You're bound to get into 700 million edits anyway, so try not to get too stuck on writing a perfect story and WRITE A STORY first. My biggest drawback when writing my first trilogy was just being shitty to myself and trying to perfect something I knew will probably evolve with me as time goes by. I'd come to the end of the book, start editing the beginning, realize "this is so shit yo" and then rewrite it again, and ten years went by like a breeze haha. It's only once I let go of this pressure to write perfection and instead wrote a story I enjoyed that I managed to actually finish something. We will always evolve and we will always write something better than we did 5 years ago, and that's okay. It's preferable, actually.

Another huge mistake I've done when I first began writing The Kostrov Traces was not having any outline for the story. I had the general events that happened, but why they happened, how they correlated, what I wanted to say with them... who the hell knows! Haha. It lead me down many years of rewriting just to get it to a place where the story does have a cohesive narrative with a point. The outline itself doesn't have to be perfect, it doesn't even have to be detailed or set in stone, but you should have the general idea of who your characters are, what their arcs will be, and what you want people to get from the story.

As for the topics you mentioned, I feel like talking to people brings you where no website can. There are many people who have gone through events that you're researching and I always like to listen to them instead of treating mental illnesses and traumatic experiences like a chartboard of words. Every experience is unique and I feel like the best way to represent something is to engage with that uniqueness and truly understand it on a human level. When interaction isn't available, there are plenty of interviews people who have been through these events have done, so I definitely suggest researching those alongside the regular medical and historical research on the web you'd usually do. I also like to write about things I have experienced or have been around to see the effect of. Of course, this won't always be possible, but this adds the layer of personal experience that simply makes topics feel "alive". I write about mental health because I have direct experience with it, which allows me a bit of a perspective in the experiences characters may go through. I don't have experience with irreversable and worsening chronic pain, though, so I spent a lot of time learning from people who do to see their highs and their lows in hope I can represent it correctly.

I don't have specific websites sadly. I just fact checked everything I read several dozen times and was lucky enough to have friends who are also professionals in fields I was researching who could advise me when I was unsure about something. I feel like the best way to write a character that does have a certain issue is by humanizing them instead of making them "this xy disorder character". Their disorders and experiences are unique to them, so try to get into their head and allow them to be people with those traits instead of symptoms disguised as characters. Don't romanticize mental illness and trauma either and don't shy away from showing the raw sides of it, too.

People in their life who always assumed FJ is the emotional one between them just haven't spent enough time around Rick to realize his skin is as tough as an old peach left in rain for three weeks (in other words, he's just a little boo in a big body, pls do not ask him sentimental questions 😭💔)

Story rambling:

This was at the end of the first couple of months since Rick and FJ first met each other. They spent a lot of that time trying to figure out who exactly FJ was before he got injured and slowly worked on triggering his memories in any way they possibly could (as he had a head injury-related memory loss). This accidentally lead to a formation of a really tight friendship that started to overtake why they were spending time together in the first place. Eventually, Rick managed to identify him and the time came for FJ to go back to Sandcrest, something neither of them were really looking forward to at that point, even though they didn't want to admit it.

FJ made a mistake of asking about Rick's wedding ring, something that Rick was never really prepared to talk about and it lead to this very moment. It's been five years since Loretta's passing but he was nowhere near over it, nor accustom to the emptiness it left behind. He felt immensely guilty about his inability to celebrate her life without falling apart, and FJ unintentionally made him feel alive again, even for just a little while. It was then that they both realized the difference they made in each other's lives, and the rest is history ❤️‍🩹🤎

They kind of nearly went separate ways after this before they used honey cake and Christmas as a reason why FJ shouldn't really rush home THAT quickly, and he just never left the Kostrovs ever since hahah

Meghan Kostrova, tormenting her mean looking father since the day she exploded into existence. She's almost a scarier presence than he is in her adult years, which takes some serious skill

Story rambling: Despite Maggie's pretty rough start in life after her mother's passing, she ended up being arguably the most stable and well rounded of all the Kostrovs. She was a bit explosive as anyone raised by Rick is but, because of the extremely healthy environment Rick created for her after the trauma she had gone through, she grew up to be an extremely confident and empathetic adult, the one people were forever grateful to have as a friend. She was a musician later in life, a pretty successful singer and a hobbyist photographer who worked her butt of to achieve her dreams ♡ although her coping mechanisms were a lot healthier than those of the rest of her family, it didn't mean she wasn't a Kostrov still - her feisty nature made her everyone's worst nightmare when she would notice people doing others a disservice and she had absolutely no issue standing up to anyone that steps on her toes.

Maggie also grew up as arguably the only person that held Rick in her grip, usually the one to shove him back in his place when he had his destructive moments. She never really understood why everyone was so horrified of him - to her, he was just a goofy teddy bear with funny eyebrows who took himself way too seriously for waay too long in his life

For a lot of the story plot, she's a young adult and lives her own life but, luckily or unluckily for her, she always gets dragged back in one way or another haha

When Maggie lost her mom and Rick lost his beloved wife, they both went through two completely different grieving paths. Maggie was the direct witness to what happened the day Loretta died and had the potential to stay truly scarred for life, but with the help of her aunt and Rick, she was given all the possible help she possibly could have needed.

Rick, on the other hand, was held in jail as a suspect. He missed a very crucial part od Maggie's grieving, so once he was finally released, he put all his efforts into keeping Maggie safe, happy and healing while, sadly, neglecting himself for a long time. It lead to a lot of supressed grief he hadn't really processed and a lot of regret that would surface only years later.

Did you intentionally design Rick to resemble a lion? Ever since I've seen him on your TT, I keep on getting lion vibes.

I actually didn't! People do say this very often so it must have happened accidentally hhaha I can totally see why though, so it's a welcome comparison ❤️

He was vaguely designed with owl features since I wanted him to emote with the tips of his hair. For example, when he's sad or happy or whatever else, I wanted to have the ability to kinda express that visually through his hair alongside his face, which is kind of what owls do with their weird eyebrow-head feathers haha

The main purpose of the hair tips has been to make them look like little horns though haha. I always thought it makes him comically villainous and suited his spiky brows.

They're Maggie's and Mike's kid who was lucky enough to gain conciousness after Rick's criminal prime and sadly too late to actually see him outside of the shadows too much in their late teens.

If Rick Kostrov had a chance or wish to change something in his life, what would it be? Would he change how his parents were like when he was younger? Or will he change the bad decisions he's made throughout his life when he moved to Krasnogorod? If not, what's his reasoning and why? If yes, why also?

Oof this is kind of difficult to answer because there are just so many instances that kind of lead him to where he was which he would absolutely love to change. In other ways, however, he wouldn't change many of them because he knows it saved lives and brought love not just to him, but to people around him (Jake, Maggie, FJ, Bella, Ryan, FJ's son Spence...)

The thing he often mentions he wishes he could take back during the books is meeting Loretta (his late wife). Not because he wishes to erase her influence but to spare her the fate that befell her "because" of him. He always said he'd give his life for hers at any day and he never felt any differently throughout his entire life. He truly believed she would have brought so much good to the world if she never met him.

He would likely also never shake Kendle's hand (his ex-boss from the Underground in Krasnogorod), given another chance. He'd stray far away from him because that one decision truly did ruin his and so many other lives in the long run.

If he could change others, he'd certainly make it so his father never had children so he can never trap Donna (Rick's mother) in their home or abuse Rick. He hated that man but he hated him more because he did love him, in a strange sort of way, despite how abusive he was toward him. Rick would certainly rather give his mother freedom of Rostya's chains and never be born than ever be faced with love that can never come without physical torture.

At the same time, as I mentioned before, he'd struggle with all of this because he knows his life lead him to beautiful people, and those beautiful people loved him dearly. If he could change it so Loretta was okay and everyone is safe with her here, he'd give his life for it in a second.

Ima be so fr with you all I know about your characters/story is how they look and a little bit about each of them but anyways whats your inspiration for your art style? And how long have you been an artist? :3c

I actually don't think there is just one single inspiration behind the artstyle! :D I grew up watching old animated films and reading a lot of Donald Duck comics haha so I'm sure that's where a lot of my artstyle came from in those early days. I loved watching the Fox and the Hound for example and I remember drawing a lot of it when I was young. It's definitely influenced by old 2D animation and comic books, but I honestly just kept drawing and the style developed pretty randomly. Animation helped refine it a lot since you have to actually think about shapes and what details are important to keep and which aren't.

My animation inspiration will always be Treasure Planet! That's peak animation I want to achieve one day, even 1% of that magic will be enough for me 🥹🤲❤️

I've been an artist since I was a super young kid! I had the luck of being encouraged to do this from a very early age (plus I'm also fairly introverted and anxious, so I spend a lot of time drawing haha and I mean A LOT). I can go deeper into it another time, but long story short, I spent many years working as hard as I physically can so I can ensure this can be my full time job as I knew I had certain limitations otherwise. I also hyperfixated on this Grimport story very early on (I was below 10 when these characters came into existence ❤️) which helped with the discipline haha

I've since been through art achool, majored in animation and started my own business + another business with my colleagues, and have been working professionally for a little under 5 years (with many more years and side gigs even before that).

Story rambling:

I mostly draw his weird nightly ventures 'cause, you know, that's where the drama happens, but he really just spends most of his days past the age of 40 chilling on that roof, or hiding in the house because the sunlight annoys him too much. 

I kinda like his 50s saga a lot - once he actually recovered from that nervous breakdown and left his shady life behind, he entered a bizarre era of self discovery, and this man did not understand the word "subtlety". Extravagant fur coats and sparkling suits aside, it was kind of difficult to care about living a life by someone else's standards once he disassociated into constant state of satire for a while too long in order to keep his sanity.

It made him really live every day as if it were his last. Sometimes this meant buying several billboards across the city with his face plastered on them just so his bigoted first neighbor has to look at him no matter where he goes, and sometimes it meant hugging FJ and the kids just a little bit tighter before sleep. As much as he was just slightly unhinged and treating everything like one big joke past his clash with Kendle, it was really the best outcome he could have ever hoped for after the type of life he lived.

for some reason i had been thinking about this a lot but, if this were set in a more modern time, would Rick be more mindful of the political issues now and STILL run something underground knowing the risks were higher? idk i think it would be so cool to see how his character would move within this timeline. especially because he’s so aware of everything. i can imagine him running like very well knowing political events like rallies or protests.

Oh I think about this so often haha 😩 I think he'd be just as bad if not worse. I'll start by kinda rambling about the state of Rick's world in general:

The thing about Krylovgrad Oblast (place in the USSR where Rick's gotten dragged into the underground) between the WWII and the fall in the early '80s is that the risks were really high already, people just didn't have social media and the media they did have was government-issued. USSR in general was nearly impossible to get out of when Rick did and he basically risked his life and got out of the country safely just because his connection to his late uncle (who was an army general) allowed him to bribe the officers to let him go.

A similar thing happened to New Rosea at a certain point. During The Kostrov Traces, Grimport and New Rosea in general had the "look" of a regular US state even though they absolutely were not functioning the same way. Their police, for example, was centralized and was beginning to get heavily involved in the government. The infrastructure in general was absolutely horrible, so unless you lived in Ripstead and you were a high class citizen (aka, a part of the 1% fleet of the factory CEOs that essentially owned New Rosea), you were not in a great spot. This was not exactly as bad between the '60s and '70s when the Kostrov Traces takes place, but it becomes incredibly difficult to ignore in Fiasco Elite between '80s and '90s when the police headquarters chief did actually take a seat in the legislature and began executing the will of their governer as they both saw fit (and the governor wanted New Rosea to be about factories and profit alone, which ended up costing people lives, their homes, their safety, completely severed the classes into the poorest and the richest, and ended up causing riots that Rick, among others, began to orchestrate).

All that to say, if he saw today's world in general, he'd be losing it. His issues way back in the 20th century were largely isolated to a single state (though rising and never really isolated in truth), but the situation today is widespread and inescapable. I'm sure he'd be in the middle of the riots and all, but I'm also unsure how long he'd make it with how incredibly hard it is to stay annonymus these days and how paranoid he was already. He saw a lot of shit during his time, but one thing he had on his side is being able to hide in the shadows, which he was still paranoid about. I'm uncertain if he'd be able to handle today's state of technology and I don't think he'd feel as confident with calculated risks. I think he'd be much more quick to act just due to how swiftly he'd feel he'd be snuffed out, which might mean he'd be less useful to the cause than he was in the 20th century if we just look at his mental state.

TDLR; yes he'd be involved and he'd definitely be plotting some underground rebellion, I just don't believe it would be as successful as it was back in the day because Rick does not do well under surveillance and becomes erratic. He'd, potentially, be more destructive in a less productive way and his mental state would likely deteriorate quicker.
