The Reluctant I
In the spring of 1993, my team was chasing an F2 tornado in a small northern town called Waynoka when we received news of the biggest tornado that Oklahoma would ever witness. The storm chasing caravan known as the Twisterminators quickly changed their route east to where the storm was brewing. Quitting the current tornado wasn’t an issue due to the fact that it was quickly dissipating. Our team leader, Thom Jarton, made the call to change the plan for the day, a call in which he would later regret.
Thirty-two miles east, the Twisterminators found themselves gazing into a ferocious devil of a storm. The sky was dark despite it was midday. Thom was on the phone with the local weather station, WKAY News 7, giving them projected routes of the tornado and receiving helpful information from them as well. Hail pounded the cars as we approached the storm. The sound was like a clothes dryer full of quarters playing their demented beat. Small cracks began to form in the windshield window, a window in which the team replaced several times over.
The plan was to locate the tornado and to follow it for photographing and to give accurate up-to-the-minute information to News 7. They would later compensate us. Adrenaline hurled through our veins as we first spotted the twister. Nobody on the team had ever seen a cyclone as big and terrifying as what was tearing apart the world just two miles ahead. They could hear the roar from where they were, like an old train coming at them a hundred thousand miles per hour. Terry Helking, the photographer for the Team, said later that he could actually feel his heart beat against his ribs.
Our caravan sped toward the storm. The members of the team waited for Thom to give the “stop” order but it did not happen. Debris filled the tornado. It was clear that the winds had eaten several buildings and cars. We would later come to find that it had eaten towns whole like a demon beast at a buffet. Thom wanted us to get closer. When we were just a mile from the F5 tornado, it changed its direction and came right toward us. At the speed of light, the team whipped their vehicles around. They were no longer storm chasers but rather the ones being chased. Running for their lives.
One of the vehicles, when turning around, hydroplaned on the wet road and hit a telephone pole. The car stalled. The others did not even notice. They sped away. The occupants in the crashed car called for help on their radio but the others could not hear them above the roar of the tornado just behind them. All along, the demon storm came raging for them, like the reaper himself collecting souls. They rushed to get the car running but it wouldn’t start. They kept calling on the radio in desperation and fear. The other members of the team heard their cry and while one car sped forward, Thom’s car turned around. They had front row seats to a tragedy.
In what seemed like only seconds, the storm came for them. The stalled car was lifted into the air along with trees, pieces of building, animals, telephone poles, vehicles and a million other items. They flew up into the air five hundred feet or more before the tornado lost its grip. The car freefell back to earth and hit the ground at a hundred miles per hour causing an explosion. The members of the team were killed instantly. Their bodies were never recovered. The cameras on the cars captured everything. The death of the storm chasers were broadcasted live on WKAY News 7. In living color.
The members in the caravan were in shock at what they had seen but the driver had enough clarity of mind to run. They turned the car around and drove as fast as they could away from the F5. Thom regretted the decision for the rest of his life to chase that tornado. In fact, he regretted chasing tornadoes at all. He was responsible for those men’s lives. He was their captain. Their lives were in his hands and the ferocious devil devoured them whole. He never chased a storm again. None of us did.

Dinner Time
"Dinner's ready! guys, dinner! Where is everybody? guy's stop playing video games and come to the table, now! I'm not going to say it twice, I'm not in the mood for it tonight. Don't you dare give me that look, Peter. Where's your sister? Carrie! Dinner! Jesse go find your sister, please. Peter come to the table. There you are Carrie. Where were you? Alright, let's all just sit still for half an hour and enjoy dinner together, that's all I'm asking. Let's not make this harder than it has to be.
Carrie, will you say grace, please? What do you mean you don't want too? Aren't you thankful for being able to eat? Fine, Jesse, what about you, will you pray? You too, huh. I don't know what's up with you kids today. You know what, I'll pray. Shut your eyes! Bow your heads! Hush!. Thank you Lord for our food that you provided us. Amen. Now eat.
So Peter, how was school today. Peter, what are you doing? Peter Brinkley, put your pants back on! I don't care if it's more comfortable, this is the dinner table! Nobody wants to see that. I don't care if that upsets you. Where did you learn that gesture, mister! You never raise that finger to me again, you hear me. You know what? you can go to your room without dinner. I'm not gonna have that attitude in this house, pal. It's too late for sorry, you need to take your plate to the sink and go to your room. Carrie, don't provoke him, Carrie, stay out of this. Carrie! This is between me and your brother. Do you wanna go to your room too, young lady? What did you say? Forget about your room, go to the bathroom, get the bar of soap ready, I'll be there in a minute. Why does every night have to be like this. Are other families like this? Am I a bad mother? Thanks Jesse, that's sweet of you to say. Don't tell the others but I made a pecan pie. It'll be our secret."

Vinny and The Cat
I walked out to the alley way that separates J. Walkman and Turner Law Firm and the Klein Deli across from it. Apart from the dirt and the occasional smell of the city when the breeze brings it to you, it's the only place to have a quiet lunch.
The alley has a few large refrigerator boxes nestled up to the law office side and a dumpster that hasn't been emptied in God knows how long. Trash has been blown by the wind and gotten stuck in the corner by the dumpster to create a pile. The faint smell of sour milk and meat that's gone bad hits me every few seconds but after awhile the smell goes away.
The street is in view, just a few yards away really. Cars hurrying along to get to where they need to go. The yellow taxi's taking the back roads in order to make a few extra bucks. The sidewalk is full to the brim with people in fancy dresses and business suits. Probably heading to another Law Firm. God knows this city is full of them. You're never short of a few lawyers. Did you ever hear the one about the good kids growing up to become doctors and the bad ones becoming lawyers? It wasn't a joke, just an observation..
WHAM! The door from the delicatessen slams open and crashes against the brick building. An older man, in his late fifties, walks out to the steps with a chef’s jacket over his hairy shoulder and a disgruntled look on his face. He shoots his eyes my direction as if to say, "Yea, you too, huh?" Heck, the alleyway makes for a nice lunchroom, I guess for some people it's a place to release bad emotions. The old man, I'll call him Vinny, digs through the pockets and pulls out a pack of Kents.. He holds the carton to his mouth and pulls out a single stick with his teeth. He puts the carton away in one pocket, at the same time digs through the other. He pulls out a lighter, cuffs his hands around the cigarette to calm the effects of the wind, and lights up.
Vinny sits down on the top stair of his side of the alley, the smoke from the cigarette billows from his mouth. He grabs a brown crumpled up paper bag, pulls out a sandwich, probably bologna, heck, he works at a deli, it's probably honey ham and muenster. An interesting thing happens while he eats his lunch. An alley cat, black with a few patches of white, climbs out of the alley rubble and walks up to him with no fear. MEOW! the cat says to Vinny. MEOW! Vinny says back. Vinny presumes to talk to the cat like they were old friends having a beer at a high school reunion. Vinny delicately tears a piece of his sandwich meat and tosses it to the cat. The little black ball of fur scarfs it down like he hadn't had a meal in days. Poor thing, looking closely you can see the outline of his ribs, the cat, not Vinny.
After licking his furry lips, he sniffed the dirty ground and then looked up at me. He looked right into my eyes. You would think that a hungry cat like that would be eyeballing the half eaten turkey club in my hands but he didn't. He looked at me. Almost like a person would if they were looking for validation. I tore a piece of turkey from my sandwich and tossed it a few feet from where he was sitting. He scarfed it down and then ran back toward the same direction that he came, disappearing in the alleyway trash.
"He's a con cat, ya know," Vinny said with a thick, Italian accent..
"What do you mean."
"He's not as hungry as you'd think," Vinny resumed, "He probably feasts on plump, juicy rats all day, the alley is like a smorgasbord to him."
Looking at the sandwich in my hands, suddenly I'm not so hungry. I think it was the "Plump and juicy rat" comment that got me. I threw my sandwich down on the ground near where the cat was before, stood up, brushed off, wished Vinny a good day and began back toward J. Walkman and Turner. As I opened the door, the little black cat ran down the alley, picked up the turkey from the sandwich and ran back to his hiding place. Vinny snickered and gave a wink toward the cat. I should have known. Vinny and the cat working together. I was having lunch with two con men.
