Fixing a broken lens
I picked up a broken anamorphic adapter that I sort of fixed with some optical adhesive. The result was not as good as I wanted but it’s in the corner of the lens so I’ll probably just mask it off

DIY Camera Trigger
I have been getting into videography recently, and have found the top handle a rather comfortable way to hold the camera. However, normally the camera can only be triggered using the shutter/record button, and holding the top handle with one’s right hand means that the camera has to be transferred to the left hand, in order to start recording. SmallRig makes a nice top handle with a record…

Quick note on Tintype
I recently bought a few tintype plates from Zebra Dry Plate, and used the HC110 (150x dilution) + 1g ammonium thiocyanate per 150mL formulation for development (7min, 20degC). The plates were then fixed in 1:4 dilution Rapid Fixer (4min, 20degC). The developer is supposed to be good for one 8×10 plate, so I reasoned that it can handle 2 4×5 plates comfortably. However, I think that the second…
Rode VideoMic Cable Mod
I’ve owned my Rode VideoMic for more than 10 years and I’ve always loved the sound it captures. Compared to the internal microphones of many cameras, the sound quality is crisp and clear. However, as I’ve stepped away from photography in general for many years (having only restarted in end of 2023), I did not realize that the audio cable for the mic had dry-rotted away. Seeing this and many…
Sidequest: Canon SELPHY Transparency
Canon Selphy dye sub printers make great little prints. The way they work is that dye loaded sheets are heated, whereupon the dyes migrate onto the photo paper. The used cartridge thus contains effectively a negative image. By printing an inverted image, the dye sheets retain a positive image in three layers – Cyan, Yellow, and Magenta. I mounted these (poorly, I might add) onto acrylic plates,…
Canon VT De Luxe - Arguably the Best LTM Camera
As an inveterate camera collector, it was only a matter of time before I fell in with the Canon rangefinders. I had picked up a Canon P middle of last year, and truly enjoyed it. Unfortunately my copy has a problem with the shutter speeds, and that kept me on the hunt for another. In the process, I came across a VT de luxe on sale locally, and picked it up. For the uninitiated, the “de luxe”…
It's a New Year, 2026!
It’s been nearly two and a half years since my last post. In the intervening years, I have experienced many changes. But here I am, back again. A few quick updates: I still have tonnes of Gundam kits, but most of them have not been built Castle Grayskull suffered an unexpected problem in early 2024. Some ants found their way into the foam and created a huge nest in the castle, hollowing out…
Cinestill Monobath and Expired Tri-X
I’ve been testing a new Canon VT Deluxe, which I’ll write about soon. I loaded a 24-frame Tri-X from my bulk roll. Because I was really lazy, I decided to develop it (shot at ISO 200) in the Cinestill Monobath DF96 developer. While the images were pretty good, there were some brownish stains in the roll. This reminded me of the fogging I saw in my old bulk roll when standing developed. Perhaps…

A surfeit of Leicas
In the past 1+ years, I have grown my collection of Leicas significantly. Although I did offload a digital Leica M240, I picked up the following Leica M3 Leica M4 Leica IIIf Leica M2 Black Paint Leica MP That has meant that my beloved M2 (my first) had seen little use for almost 2 years. This past December, I decided to remedy that by bringing the Leica M2, and a collapsible 5cm Summicron…

Making a (Te)X-Pan
Many photographers have heard of the Hasselblad X-Pan, a panorama camera that costs as much as a digital Leica M. And furthermore, being an electronic device, it has a habit of failing without warning, with zero chance of rescuing it from becoming an expensive doorstop. Enter, the TeX-Pan. It’s nothing more than the Fujifilm GW690, aka the Texas Leica. The main thing that needs to be done is…

Major Update on Konica Hexar AF
Alright folks! After the near miss a few months ago, I’ve managed to snag an amazing copy of the Hexar AF with the hard-to-find dedicated flash unit, in near mint condition, for less than 700 USD. I’ve already shot 3 rolls with it, and it’s every bit as amazing as it’s reputed to be. Rapid and accurate AF, superb color rendition. Definitely well worth the money. Here are some shots from the…

Expired Tri-X Tests
I’ve been shooting a bulk roll of Tri-X that’s been particularly poorly stored. Seeing that it’s taking me a long time to go through the roll, I decided to shelf the old roll, and break out another 100ft that is a couple of years newer and stored in cooler conditions. My reasoning is that if I am going to be shooting so slowly, the better roll will continue degrading while I struggle with the…

*This* close
I was *this* close to buying a Konica Hexar AF today. On the surface the camera looks great. I took the camera, tried focusing, and when I pressed the shutter, the text in the display went garbled. Electronic cameras like this one are always a bit of a gamble. The seller tried to explain that this is a common problem and that the camera will reset once the battery is removed. I was having none…

Mu Metal Revisited
It’s been more than a year, and I just want to provide a quick update. I have indeed fixed the problems with the Olympus Mju-Metal. I have left the film in the camera for more than a year, and still, no evidence of light leaks. Pictures below!

Travelwide Wanderlust Part 2
After tricking out my Travelwide, I wondered, what else could I do with it? I have been listening to the I Dream of Cameras Podcast, and Jeff Greenstein has been talking up the X-Pan for years. I am quite intrigued by panorama cameras, but don’t have the sort of income to piss on an X-Pan, so instead I went on eBay and bought a Chinese 6×12 roll back for my large format cameras. In particular, I…

The Travelwide Wanderlust
The Travelwide Wunderlust was a spectacular Kickstarter success that I backed when I was in Baltimore. Several delays meant that I had left for Singapore by the time the camera was ready to ship. Although the team delivered in the end, they were harangued by the backers incessantly. Kudos to the team for seeing it through. It ultimately broke them, though. I received mine 2 years plus after…

Strange Coincidences
Sometimes, life has a way of throwing strange coincidences at you. One such instance has to do with David Lynch. In the past year, I have been listening to the Film Photography Podcast, and one of the features is that it will sometimes have esoteric sound clips patched in, often to humorous effect. One clip that caught my attention was from Twin Peaks (a famous quote about the virtues of…
