What is Pop Culture Magic/Witchcraft?
In this post I will explain what pop culture magic is, how it works, and who can practice it. Please be aware this is very much a jumping off point. I recommend doing your own research and coming to your own conclusions.
MAGIC FOR THE CITY DWELLER
CHAPTER ONE: WELCOME TO THE CONCRETE JUNGLE, WHERE MAGIC NEVER SLEEPS
magic isnât just for the deep woods and moss-covered stones. itâs not limited to candlelit covens or ancient runes etched in a sacred grove. magic is where you are. in the humming neon signs, the flickering streetlamps, the rhythm of bus doors opening and closing, in the energy of walking amongst a crowd on a busy street.
urban magic is about finding the mystical in the mundane, harnessing the cityâs restless energy, and using every graffiti tag, liminal space, cracked pavement, and forgotten coin as a tool for enchantment. the city is aliveâa churning, breathing, chaotic organismâand if you listen closely, itâs whispering spells in the wind between skyscrapers.
this isnât some high-brow, ceremonial magic doctrine. here, we work with sigils written on coffee shop napkins, metro card protection spells, and phone screens charged as scrying mirrors. this is magic for the streets, for the punks, for the witches in walk-ups and studio apartments, for the ones who find the divine in the hum of a dive bar at 3 AM.
WHAT MAKES URBAN MAGIC DIFFERENT?
the biggest shift between traditional and urban magic is the environment. instead of sacred groves, we have community gardens. instead of rivers, we have storm drains. instead of bonfires, we have neon lights and power grids pulsing with raw electricity.
but just because the setting is different doesnât mean the magic is weaker. city magic is potent as hell, because itâs charged with movement, history, technology, and millions of lives overlapping in real-time.
ELEMENTS IN AN URBAN CONTEXT:
⢠earth â concrete, bricks, asphalt, parks and park dirt
⢠air â the wind between high-rises, the whispers of overheard conversations, the endless streams of information moving across the city
⢠fire â electricity, neon lights, the heat of a crowded bus, a match or lighter
⢠water â rain pooling in the streets, sewer systems, fountains in public squares, water dripping from rooftops
⢠spirit â the city itself, the collective energy of its people, the ghosts in old buildings, the echoes of everyone whoâs walked these streets before you
this practice isnât about forcing the old ways into a modern setting. itâs about adapting magic so that it fits your world, your reality, your city.
THEORY & FRAMEWORK: CHAOS MAGIC, QUEER MAGIC, AND CITY SPELLS
urban magic thrives on three key principles:
1. ADAPTATION â use whatâs around you. city witches need to be resourceful as hell. your âwandâ can be a pen, a drumstick, or a crowbar if thatâs what speaks to you (though a crowbar is a little extreme). your âaltarâ can be a windowsill, a shoebox, or even temporary like the back of a bus seat where you traced a sigil in the condensation.
2. INGENUITY â urban magic is subtle, fast, and often disguised. your ritual circle might be drawn in spilled coffee, your sigils hidden in street art, your glamour spells worked through fashion choices and body language.
3. INTERACTION â the city is alive. talk to it. work with the spirits of your apartment building, the crows and raven and wandering city cats who see a lot, the graffiti messages that seem to answer your questions in cryptic scrawls, street names that feel like answers to questions. trust your gut, keep watch for the synchronicity
MAGICAL SYSTEMS THAT THRIVE IN THE CITY:
1. CHAOS MAGIC: THE DIY APPROACH TO WITCHCRAFT
urban magic truthfully falls under the umbrella of chaos magic.
chaos magic is sort of like punk rock spellwork. no rules except what works. itâs the belief that magic isnât just about ancient texts and strict traditionsâitâs about belief as a tool. hacking reality, using symbols, and experimenting with what actually gets results. if something stops working you chuck it and move on to something new.
⢠create sigils from street signs, corporate logos, and subway maps.
⢠use âreality hackingâ spellsâlike placing intent in a QR code or whispering an incantation into a social media post before it goes viral.
⢠swap out outdated correspondences for modern toolsâyour phone can be your scrying mirror, your router a beacon for intention-setting.
chaos magic thrives in the city because cities are chaotic. theyâre full of random encounters, glitches, synchronicities waiting to be tapped into.
2. QUEER MAGIC: BREAKING RULES, BENDING REALITY
witchcraft has always been the domain of outsiders, rebels, and the marginalized. queer magic embraces fluidity, resistance, and radical self-expression.
⢠use genderfluid deities, archetypes, and spirits in your workings.
⢠cast spells at drag shows, pride marches, and underground ravesâbecause those are modern sacred spaces.
⢠turn self-love into a spell, defying the narratives that say queer people donât deserve power, joy, or love.
urban queer magic is loud, unapologetic, and built on the bones of those who paved the way before.
TOOLS & MATERIALS: USING THE CITY AS YOUR SPELLBOOK
urban witches donât need fancy supplies. we use:
⢠đą smart phones â scrying mirrors, digital sigil boards, enchanted playlists
⢠đŤ metro cards & transit tickets â protection charms, travel blessings
⢠đ keys â for unlocking opportunities, closing doors that need to stay shut
⢠đ pens & sharpies â sigil-making, graffiti spellwork
⢠đŞ spare change â prosperity charms, offerings to city spirits
⢠𧞠receipts â paper magic, petition spells, glamour workings
if it exists in your daily life, it can be a tool.
EVERYDAY SPELLS & RITUALS
đŽ PROTECTION SPELLS FOR NAVIGATING CITY LIFE
⢠âdoorway wardâ â rub salt along your threshold, whispering âno harm may cross this line.â
⢠âmetro shieldâ â imagine a glowing energy bubble around you before stepping onto public transit.
đ° PROSPERITY & SUCCESS SPELLS
⢠âlucky coinâ â pick up a found coin, say âbring me fortune,â and carry it for a week.
⢠âresume enchantmentâ â anoint your job applications with cinnamon for luck before sending.
đĄ HACKING REALITY WITH CHAOS MAGIC
⢠âdigital sigilsâ â set a sigil as your phone wallpaper and charge it every time you unlock your screen.
⢠âparking spellâ â whisper âopen the wayâ as you search for a spotâwatch as one appears.
đ COMMUNITY SPELLS & URBAN COLLECTIVE MAGIC
⢠âcity-wide sigil workâ â drop the same symbol in different places and see what manifests.
⢠âfull moon offeringsâ â leave a quarter at a crossroads to honor the cityâs spirits.
THE CITY IS YOUR ALTAR
this is your grimoire, your spellbook, your guide to turning the city into a magical playground. donât just live in itâwork with it, enchant it, let it enchant you back.
magic is everywhere, babes. you just have to know where to look.

The way this photo shoot is giving me flashbacks to my vkei obsession as a tween and first seeing performers be so ambiguous in their gender and sexuality makes me so giddy. Vkei was such an influence on my queer awakening and I hope somewhere out there Xlov is that for others too.

Hi, how are you?
Youâre not waiting, youâre expecting. Waiting is for the line at the DMV, expecting is for manifestations
Iâm not policing peopleâs words, I swear. Use whatever term you want ;-; But this is more so about the shift in perspective to be made thatâs genuinely beneficial. To get mildly (and crudely) science-y before I make my point:
When you expect something, your brain codes/interprets it as already on its way. The system that constantly makes guesses about incoming sensory input then fires as if the event is certain in your reality. That triggers a dopamine release, which signals your nervous system to prepare for the incoming reward.
When youâre waiting, your brain interprets the event as uncertain. Uncertainty spikes stress and cortisol, and pushes your nervous system into a state of tension, fatigue, and frustration.
Thereâs a difference between waiting for something to happen and expecting it. And it really changes the game if youâre someone whoâs sick of waiting and worried about marinating in that draining feeling of waiting for the shift or the manifestation.
Waiting implies fatigue, as inâyouâre tired and youâre stuck in this limbo, waiting for something to come around when youâre not even sure if it will. Youâre just exhausted, drowning in the not knowing, wanting it so badly but getting pulled deeper into the waiting itself.
Expecting, on the other hand, holds a completely different energy. Expecting means you know youâve already done what you needed to do for the thing to come, so now youâre just expecting it. It doesnât suggest any dragged-out time frame, because youâre not âwaitingâ, youâre expecting. Expectation means it could arrive at any second. And it can, because you already have it. Thatâs why expectation feels present and immediate, itâs because youâre open to it happening right now.
Thatâs the same reason we say pregnant people are expecting a baby. Not âwaitingâ for the kid to pop out whenever it feels like it. Or why we say weâre expecting a visitor, not just waiting around for them to maybe appear. Or why we say weâre expecting a call, not sitting and waiting to see if the phone rings. Expecting implies certainty, because you know itâs coming. Semantics, in a way, but trust me on this.
This matters, because I constantly see people say theyâre waiting for their manifestation, waiting for the shift to happen, waiting for the illusion to drop, waiting for whatever. And then they spiral, because waiting feels exhausting (who the hell likes waiting??)
But youâre not !! waiting!! If youâve already done the workâwhatever your process isâyouâre expecting. (Congratulations, please donât cause a forest fire in the pursuit of a trendy gender reveal).
Waiting vs. expecting is like wanting vs. knowing, or thinking vs. deciding. When you move from the energy of waiting to the energy of expecting, youâre no longer at the mercy of âwhen.â Youâre no longer powerless, because youâre expecting, and that automatically works in your favor for manifestation and shifting, because it changes the way you observe reality without forcing it or stressing over it.
If whatever you observe in reality, isâ meaning, for example, whatever religion you observe is the one that plays out in your life, whatever law you observe becomes the one that dictates your reality, whatever beliefs, rules, assumptions, or intentions you observe are the ones you experience.
So when you shift your POV from waiting (âI donât know when this will come, I have no controlâ) to expecting (âI know itâs coming, I know itâs mineâ), you step into the role of control. Expecting aligns you with letting go and letting it flow (unintentional rhyme) NOTT because youâre clueless and waiting around, but because you already know itâs on the way.
That shift in perspective changes everything about how you see and experience what you want. How to apply this is just,,, honestly, just knowing that youâre not waiting. Thereâs no magical rule to apply here other than interpreting things differently.
Could help if you worry acknowledging the âwaitingâ causes a delay. It doesnât, especially if youâre acknowledging the expectation. If anything, that reinforces that what you want is already yours.

How I Mastered the Law of Assumption and Shifting
It all started in 2021, when a friend of mine first told me about shifting. I didnât question whether it was real or not, I just went with it. At that time, I was looking up information online, and one afternoon I tried the sunny Method using all five senses. I managed to âmini-shiftâ into aot for a few seconds.
Then school started again, and because of my eating disorder, I put shifting aside until September 2022, when I decided I wanted to go to my skz dr.
Unfortunately, thatâs when I fell into a vicious cycle: trying method after method, getting frustrated, wondering why it wasnât working anymore, and doubting myself even though I already had proof it worked once. I kept trying, but nothing seemed to work. At that point, all I wanted was to escape my cr, which I hated, and that only made my anger and doubt worse. So I paused shifting.
In the summer of 2023, I discovered subliminals on youtube and a few months later I came across the law of assumption. I decided to try manifesting things in my current reality. But even with loa, I ended up trapped in another cycle: endless affirmations, dividing everything into 3D and 4D, waiting for signs and movement, complicated visualizations. I would make subliminals and check after five minutes if they had worked; I would assume I already had my desired appearance and then immediately look in the mirror to see if it was true. After a while it became exhausting. I was overconsuming information, and since every creator had a different perspective, I just felt even more confused.
By the end of December, I found a creator on amino who had shifted using the law of assumption. She suggested Tumblr as a place to find good resources. So I started reading posts there about loa and duality. Then I read Neville Goddardâs books. Thatâs when I had my real click.
I realized that I make the rules. There arenât two separate realities, 3D and 4D, there is only me. Manifestation is instant, and the only thing that can block it is my own belief. Failure doesnât exist.
From that moment, I started manifesting small things immediately: a canceled test, five euros, a pen, a new phone. These little successes made me realize that if I can manifest a pen, I can also shifting reality. I started assuming, without hesitation, that I can shift whenever and however I want.
Itâs that simple.
Once you assume, itâs done. The 3D is just your imagination using the five senses. Itâs not your enemy. And itâs instant.
From there, I became a master shifter now. I persist not to see the results, but because I know Iâm already living them. Even if one night I assume I wake up in my dr and the next day Iâm in my cr bed, it doesnât mean I failed. Who cares? The 3D doesnât define me, and itâs not the final result.
And indeed, on January 5th, 2024, I fully shifted into my skz dr. From that moment, I knew all of this had been worth it.
In my cr, which I once wanted to escape, Iâve now manifested everything I desired, and it feels simple: the body and appearance I want, healing from illnesses, my cat, my sp apologizing, a free trip to Budapest, and much more. At the same time, I can live multiple lives without fearing death or worrying about living only once.
So donât get discouraged. Maybe I made things too complicated along the way, but thatâs okay, it was my journey.
