Joe Dante’s classic 80’s dark comedy /horror got issued on vinyl for the first time by Waxwork Records at the end of 2018 & it’s beautiful.

This cult film deserved a release sooner but after all these years of waiting, I wasn’t let down at all. The film follows Tom Hanks & his neighbours in their quest & obsession to prove that their new neighbours are satanic murderers. It’s silly, it’s hilarious & fun!

Joe Dante managed to bring in the master of film soundtracks the late great Jerry Goldsmith, who mixes comedy, horror & the feel of American suburban life in his work for this soundtrack. ‘Night work’ the title track has an oddly creepy feel, then the organs kick in & make you feel like you are listening to a 1960’s horror soundtrack, the organs are heard throughout the soundtrack & is an integral part of the strange ‘Klopek family’ theme. There’s a military feel as well with the wonderful Bruce Dern’s character ‘Rumsfield’ in the form of ‘Bad Karma’ that adds something different. And my favourite on the album ‘The Garage’ which fits perfectly with the crazy trash/bin beating with a garden rake! The organs have their moment before the orchestra helps to make it eerie sounding. There are dog sounds & weird squeaky horns which make it all the more fun.

I was blown away with the artwork, it should be commissioned as a bottleneck poster as the original film poster is underwhelming although it makes its point. Inside the gatefold has Ray’s nightmare sequence which was a nice touch. There are also notes from the Director with another small poster worthy of framing on the other side. With the two records themselves you have a choice of the subscribers variant which is a Gorgeous light Blue with Pink splatter, which I have or the ‘Suburban sky’ marbled Blue standard.

It’s another underrated film that has gain cult status with a great cast including the late Carrie Fisher, Rick Ducommun & Cory Feldman. It’s a complete package from Waxwork Records, fun to listen to & great to look at.

Sid was great, and Sid was not Vicious. I hate it when I read the shit that people write about punk in general and Sid in particular. For a start, I don’t even really like that word — punk is just a label. Sid was fucking great; a really funny, nice person. People were stupid because they under estimated Sid, and didn’t give him enough credit for what he actually was. Sid wasn’t stupid; on the contrary, he was smart. Sid was hilarious too: he was so tall, and he had a kind of Dee Dee Ramone walk and goofy manner. Some people at the time, and some people now, under estimate Sid. Big mistake. It pisses me off. People speak and write a load of nonsense about punk.
