Donny Xiao, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk
So, we need to get out of here immediately because this bar is full of demons[âŠ]. Chidi and I are going to go out the side door. You and Tahani go out the back.
âdid i drink too much?â

âNoo honey, why would you think that?â
She sets a hand lightly on the young Kingâs shoulder. He had drunk a little too much the night before, but far be it from Shirley to outright tell him. He seemed like he had been having fun and, honestly, the poor kid could use a little more fun in his life.
Shirley removes the hand on donnyâs shoulder and touches it to his forehead, frowning.Â
âYou feeling okay?â
âBecause it feels like thereâs a deathclaw with the flu trying to tear itâs way out of my skull.â
The words are delivered in a matter-of-fact tone, which is ruined slightly by the fact that heâs muttering them into his hands. Heâs vaguely afraid that if he lifts his head heâll be sick all over Shirleyâs nice clean bar. He appreciates her reassurance, though, and the hand on his forehead is nice and cool.
âIâm... Iâll be okay.â
Itâs a lie, of course. Heâs obviously dying.

Send me âđâ to see what my muse would give yours as a Christmas present.
I bet you fifty bucks you canât turn that car over there into a fireball with just a book of matches
I mean, I could but... Iâd definitely get in trouble for that...
âthe year max only agreed to a christmas photo on the condition that she got to pick everyoneâs outfitsâ
UNINTELIGABLE SCREAMING AND CRYING
reluctant heroics
misspaulingâ:
She notices the women, in the peripherals of her vision, and Charlotte makes a very brief mental note to keep an eye on them throughout their lunch. Itâs one thing if a few girls notice and recognize Donny- gossip can be somewhat helpful in her line of work- but itâs another thing entirely should they opt to approach him.Â
Charlotte offers Donny a sympathetic frown as he slides deeper into the recesses of the booth. âUnfortunately, the attention is something youâre going to have to get used to- or at least learn to handle a little better. I donât think itâs a matter of not being safe- I think your powers just need a little work; I honestly believe with a little training youâll be perfectly okay in public spaces. Oh-â
Finally, a server approaches their table, setting a couple glasses of water before the two. Charlotte gestures between Donny and the server.
âA busy restaurant at lunchtime is a good place to start.â
âCanât I just... save people and go home?â Donny mumbles under his breath, both hands rubbing at his head, eyes on the table. âNobody acts like this about like, firefighters...â
He peeks up at Charlotte as she speaks, his face still completely incredulous. Being âperfectly okay in public spacesâ sounds like a pipe dream to Donny; heâs been a danger to those around him since he was a teenager, and the first accidental fires had started. Charlotte hadnât been around to see those. And, yeah, regular training has been helping him get a handle on his powers - he can almost always bring forth the flames at will now, and his control is improving - but heâs a long way away from feeling like heâs safe around other people.
Or comfortable around other people, really. Self imposed isolation hadnât exactly been fun, but at least it was familiar.
âI just donât kn-â Donny glances up again, and starts when he realizes thereâs someone else at the table. The server is here, and Charlotte wants him to talk to her. Oh God.
âH-hi.â Clearing his throat, Donny scrambles for the menu he hasnât even glanced at. âDo you... have beer here?â
HEY WAITER I NEED A REFILL OVER HERE
*cluelessly looks around like a big ol dork cuz he doesnât realize heâs the one getting yelled at*

âThat doesnât sound as nice as you think it does.â
the good place sentence starters | still accepting!
âIt doesnât?âÂ
Looking a little crestfallen, the young King looks worriedly down at the guitar in his hands.Â
âDoes it sound uh, out of tune? I bet itâs out of tuneâŠâ
âAny time I had a problem, and I threw a Molotov cocktail ââ BOOM! Right away, I had a different problem.â ((I know they already have a thread going but I CAN'T NOT SEND THIS ONE OKAY))

Max erupts into a fit of laughter, hugging an arm around her side as she doubles over. The bottle being held in her other hand threatens to spill as she giggles, but even drunk, Max can keep an eye on her drinks.Â
âAnd maybe thatâs why you ended up here, hm? Just a thought.â
She giggles again, bringing the bottle to her lips for a sip. A beat and her eyes widen with realization.
âUnless you wanted to work here, which,â she tips the bottle in his direction, â âs pretty fucked up.â
Donny face is so red right now, and he isnât quite sure if itâs due to the drink or the company. Hell, probably both. One thing he is pretty sure of even with his head spinning pleasantly is that getting Max to laugh is maybe the greatest thing in the world. Itâs pretty damn infectious, too; as Donny watches her his sheepish chuckle turns into something much more genuine and impossible to hold in.Â
He canât help it, he always turns into a mess when he drinks, but just at the moment he doesnât even mind.
âHah, god, no.â Donny reaches for the bottle when Max holds it out to him and gets it on the first try. âI was... it uh, it sounds really fucking dumb... I was trying to enlist. Like uh, in the army.â
Whateverâs in the bottle makes him cough when he tips it back, but it burns pretty nice while it goes down. Like fire spreading out into his fingertips.
â...anyway the molotov thing was just once. Once. I was... a really stupid kid.â
