Firewatch Reference: Inside Fire Lookout Towers
Earlier we took a look at fire lookout towers the team visited during production on Firewatch, and most of the focus was on the locations of the towers, what they looked like from the outside. This time, let’s take a look at what’s actually inside.
As fire lookouts are taken out of service and replaced by cameras, their interiors are at worst stripped bare, or at best converted to camping cabins (reserve one and camp in it here!), but during development we were lucky enough to visit one which had most of its original furniture, and one which was still staffed by an actual lookout. It meant we were able to take hundreds of reference photos of the interior build and furnishings of a lookout tower from the same era as Henry and Delilah’s, and also get a glimpse of the supplies and equipment you’d find in a fully staffed tower.
The reference photos above were taken at Huckleberry Lookout in Glacier National Park, and Crane Flat Lookout in Yosemite National Park by Jake Rodkin, Jane Ng, and Olly Moss. The lookout interior concepts were drawn by Olly Moss.
