Adventure Time Princesses
I did another Thursday night draw session with SuperJogurt. The theme was Adventure Time Princesses! I worked on Ramen Princess, Crime Princess, and Excess Princess (and Squish’em Princess in my spare time). Enjoy!
My “Ramen Princess Sketches”:
Here, we have my line art for another person’s sketch of “Crime Princess”:
[Original]
And lastly, we have my coloring for X Princess”:
Oh, and while I was waiting around or whatever, I made Squish’ems Princess!
02.01 Inside
This game is available on Steam for $19.99. Developed by Playdead.
This game begins with a kid who is seemingly on the run. You have to navigate this kid through this world while dealing with puzzles and things/people who want to kill you. It achieves all of this without any dialogue or other narration. This game leaves a lot up for interpretation.
Pros: Great art, great atmosphere, excellent rope physics, and it acts as a great example of narrative through game play. We were so enraptured with this game that we sat down and beat it in just two sittings (although it is a fairly short game to begin with).
Cons: Some of the design is a bit too obvious. By this, I mean that some of the puzzles do not seem entirely natural to the world in this game. This breaks some of the immersion.
Important note: There is more than one ending, depending on how you do with collectibles.
My rating: 8.5/10
Boyfriend’s rating: 9.0/10
01.10 - Crypt Worlds
Available for free right here.
What even is this game? You have a pee meter, there are weird monsters, skeletons, pilgrims, skypilgrims, and you can actually go to hell (although it looks more like programmer hell than anything else).
Apparently there are two endings to this game and I reached one, wherein I broke the world and ruined everything. Go me!
Make your friends play this.
My rating: 8.5/10
01.09 - Gone Home
This game is available on Steam for $19.99.
FYI - it looks like it’ll be scary but it’s not.
I’m just not that into narrative games without a lot of actual gameplay, but the narrative was alright. I just have a difficult time being cast into a role and immediately having to care about some other character that you never even interact with.
My rating: 5.0/10
01.08 - Katamari Forever
This game is available for the PS3, and you can get it for about $30 on Amazon.
THIS GAME TOOK FOREVER.
There are many many levels and some of them are pretty easy, while others are frustratingly difficult. Oh, and it’s important to note that at a certain point you will stop unlocking new levels if your cumulative score is not high enough (those numbers are unknown and I only solved that problem thanks to Google).
The game was cute though and a good chunk of it was fun, although it was mostly challenging.
My rating: 7.5/10
01.06 Bastion
Available on Steam for $14.99, and there’s a free demo!
This game is about “the Kid” in the aftermath of the “Calamity,” which tore apart the city and shattered the world into floating pieces of land. You end up with the Bastion as your home base, leaving it in order to play different levels and progress in the game. There’s a lot going on in this game, but it’s not overwhelming.
This was a good game. Good narrative, nifty visuals, terrific narrator, and challenging gameplay. It’s not my all-time favorite, but I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a game to play.
My rating: 8.0/10.0
Sidenote: I’ve made it more than halfway through the first game list that SuperJogurt has given me! Woo! Go me!
01.05 - 30 Flights of Loving
What?
This game is available on Steam for $4.99.
I’m not sure I completely get this game. Actual user participation seems to be very low, with the game instead focusing on a disjointed narrative of yourself, Anita, and Borges, who are preparing for some kind of heist. The game is very short and other than that I’m pretty fuzzy on the details.
Narrative-based games are not my game of choice, and I’m far from in love with this game, but I liked certain aspects of it, such as the graphics and character introductions.
When I played it, the game also contained (from the menu screen) an additional game: Gravity Bone. I liked Gravity Bone more, just because I felt like there was some room for user participation and it also had an interesting story.
My overall rating: 4.0/10.0
01.04 Grow Home
Available on Steam for $7.99, regular price.
I really liked this game. It’s about a robot named “BUD” who has to make a star plant grow high enough that it will bloom and reach the spaceship that BUD came from.
This game was not terribly long, it was a lot of fun, and it was pretty impressive visually. The plant grows right through the atmosphere and it’s really interesting to see how your abilities change when you’re very high up, versus when you’re on the ground. It’s also just really expansive. I feel like I still have found everything.
There is a sequel game, “Grow Up” which I have not played yet, but I’m pretty excited about.
My rating: 9.0/10.0
01.03 Digital: A Love Story
Available for free download here.
Okay, so let me start off by saying that this is not my type of game. It’s a text-based narrative driven game that I really just have a hard time getting into. That being said, I started this game a few months ago, got stuck, and then just let it sit until today! I made my boyfriend help me/take over the controls.
If you enjoy games like “Gone Home” (coming up in a later review), “Save the Date” (8.5/10), or “Analogue: A Hate Story” (I have not played) then you should give this game a shot.

Candyland Art Session
Did an art session with SuperJogurt and some other friends. Here’s what I made:
1. KitKat (warm-up)
2. Cadbury Eggs
3. Pez
4. Squish’ems (not a real candy, but whatevs)
5. Swedish Fish
01.02 The Room
This game is available on Steam. It’s $4.99.
Played this game last night and this morning. So many puzzles. It reminded me of Myst, but it has a handy “hint mode” so it’s not so terribly painful.
The puzzles had a narrative framing device in the form of notes left behind by somebody who has gone through the puzzles before you. For the most part, I found that less than necessary, but it was an interesting choice.
For the price, I think it was worth a play-through.
