other interpretations on the fox:
the fox as doubt. which is similar enough to my previous post essentially saying the fox is coy/mischievous feelings he doesn’t want to let in. but the specificity of it only being doubt is compelling. a unique spin.
colbert said he thought the fox is the hound of heaven, reciting the beginning (and the end) of the poem: “I fled Him, down the nights and down the days; I fled Him, down the arches of the years; I fled Him, down the labyrinthine ways Of my own mind; and in the mist of tears I hid from Him, and under running laughter.”
which is a beautiful and visceral interpretation of the fox. and i think it holds within it the other interps ive thought about: it brings in the doubt (of god and love and life) and his priestly direction/directionless, and his coy feelings, and who to follow god or fleabag and what’s the difference (espec when fleabag has fourth wall breaking omniscience, something akin to god).
