The Lily & The Figure

Has anyone else noticed the lily encased in glass in Jimmy's apartment?

Now I'm pretty sure the lily belongs to Jimmy (due to it appearing to be a decoration in his apartment), but I suppose it could be Martyn's and he brought it in when he crashed at Jimmy's.

What's making the lily suspicious in my eyes at least is the fact that Jimmy doesn't have many decorations in his apartment, the only noticeable one that is shown in both chapters with Jimmy's apartment (Chp. 17 & 20) is the lily. In fact, we get an even clearer image of the lily in chapter 20.

Now, what could this potentially mean? Well, in terms of flower symbolism, white lilies represent innocence, modesty, and divine grace; they are also used heavily in weddings and funerals. I can't really see a strong connection between what the lily represents and Jimmy or DDVAU in general at this point, so this flower may indicate something else.

Then I remembered something very important: there is a character in DDVAU that is associated with white lilies.

Florencia.

Thanks to DDVAU chp. 21 and the updated Relationship Chart, we know for certain that Florencia is a part of the Waytes/All Seeing Coven; so the fact that a symbol of one of the notable people of the Waytes is in Jimmy's apartment is mildly concerning and raises a lot of questions.

Something else we should talk about is the Figure.

Right, so the purple and the eye imagery, plus the words deciphered from the scribbled mess next to the Figure ("safe," "prophet," "danger," "protect," "peril," and "watcher."), it's safe to assume that the Figure is with the Waytes/All Seeing Coven.

Now, two of the most common theories around the figure are that the Figure is Florencia or that the Figure is telling Jimmy to protect Florencia. In a previous post here, I gave my reasons for why I don't believe the Figure is Florencia and why I lean toward the other theory more.

So the fact that the Figure paid a visit to Jimmy, whose apartment has a symbol closely associated with Florencia, someone the Figure seems entwined with, something feels up. Yes, it is a bit of a stretch I suppose but it is odd isn't it?

DDVAU Chapter 23 Handshake Analysis - when holding hands is actually gay

What was the most important scene during chapter 23? I know some of you are going to say “Grian winking at HG” or “HG leaning over that hospital bed”.

Look, I know Grian has more rizz than I ever will and HG’s ass is really fine, but the most important scene during chapter 23 is the handshake scene. This scene, if looked at closely, we can actually see where each of our gay disasters currently stand and their thoughts about what’s going on. Let's get into it!

G gets into HG’s space (control, on his terms), leaning in while HG leans back.

HG isn’t sure what G’s doing

G holds out hand (professional), reaching out with an olive branch (metaphorically).

HG is utterly baffled by this olive branch (his ears were up before with surprise, then they shot straight down with confusion).

G’s a lot closer than I thought (he’s nearly touching HG’s chest).

HG has crossed his arms (protection? barrier separating? trying to keep distance due to past together or not understanding what is happening right now?)

Stars - these only really appear when someone is excited. I know for a fact G isn’t excited here, so why the heck is HG so excited about this? (happy G doesn’t hate him? especially cuz this dude has a crush on G that he’s oblivious to? I’m starting to think this doodle is about Scar finally coming to the realisation that he likes G).

G is thrown off, flustered (didn’t expect that answer)

G really is a flustered mess (embarrassed, having a hard time staying in the role).

First thing G thinks of when flustered - I don’t want to call this guy hot. Makes sense, but really G, that’s the first thing you jump to?

HG is amused by G’s flustered state (chuckle)

G doesn’t like HG laughing (he’s making an effort here!)

HG leans in and responds, G is surprised by this (proximity or response?)

Sure~ - denotes playfulness or flirting! (probably playfulness considering HG being amused and chuckling, but I can hope).

HG doesn’t immediately grab G’s hand (light touch instead, probably doesn’t want to cross a line or make G too uncomfortable).

G flinches pretty hard in response to the touch (nervous? uncomfortable?)

HG lifts his hand and extends his pointer finger slightly to touch G’s pinky (showing that he still wants to shake on it but letting G ease into it?).

G reaches back pretty fast based on movement lines and how his cardigan’s sleeve is sliding back (G being resolute in what he’s doing - reminds himself of strategy/plan?).

G pulls HG’s hand back towards him based on cardigan sleeve sliding forward 

The hands are held together in the middle of the page (represents that they are now equals? Maybe that’s why G pulled HG’s hand back, to kinda say that he’s only doing this if they are equals from now on?)

HG is pretty close to G (their noses are almost touching)

That name introduction was totally flirting (HG being amused and genuine = flirting)

G breaks the flow with the lack of reaction and him being confused (really G? We could have had more flirting if you just didn’t buffer during that moment!)

HG is led to share a tidbit of personal backstory about his name to clear up G’s confusion (see G! HG is a person with hobbies and a life! When are you two going to start dating?).

G cracks up (like, hard) over this, HG immediately gets defensive (awwwww!)

After all this, G lets go of HG’s hand to pull himself together (yeah, they held hands for that entire exchange. Long time to hold the hand of someone you hate G).

G probably wanted the hand holding to be over fast (cuz of HG hate), but he got distracted by HG’s Hawk alias’ backstory.

HG probably just didn’t notice how long the handhold was (he’s not very aware of invading personal space).

HG stares at the hand that was held and rubs the finger he extended to G (did HG like G’s touch/holding G’s hand? Seems like it)

Hg clenches fist and continues convo (what are you doing HG? are you trying to save G’s touch?).

*guys, I think HG may have a crush on G, but I dunno 🙃

G give HG a light punch with the hand he held with HG (something only really used as a friendly or romantic gesture when that light 😁), G is starting to open up to HG.

So, Grian is putting his plan forward but is starting to know HG on more of a personal level, starting to see him as more of a person than just a cop. He’s getting more comfortable with HG to the point where he’s laughing at what he says, punching him lightly, even engaging in casual conversation.

HG on the other hand, is confused about what's going on and is approaching this agreement carefully to make sure he doesn’t cross a line. But at the same time this moron obviously has a crush and is oblivious to it…

So the gay disaters are still gay disaters… 

Why am I not surprised…

I wanted to add, because i noticed it while reading your amazing analysis, that I think the hand shake panels are a visualisation of grian and hotguys entire relationship timeline - or all the times they tried to start and messed up somehow

They don't really know each other, hesitant meeting

Hotguy meets grian suddenly and hurts/frightens him during mother spore

Grian suddenly decides to become "friends" with hotguy with ulterior motives which he feels he's forced into because of hotguys visits/actions

hotguy meets grian in his decision halfway, an almost equal defence to grians (when he starts visit in the hospital) Grian doesn't like this change and tries to pull away but Hotguy pulls him back in - like how hotguy blackmails him and convinces him into letting hotguy stay iirc

They're finally equal, grian accepted the handshake and hotguys dynamic with him on his own terms, they've met on the same ground and can finally start properly for the first time

I noticed that the panels containing the handshake got bigger and bigger over time so I figured it meant something symbolically, but I wasn't quite sure what.

The Figure: why it probably isn't Florencia

So the figure made its appearance in DDVAU chp. 17, appearing in Jimmy's apartment giving him night terrors.

Right, so thanks to the purple and the eye imagery, plus the words deciphered from the scribbled mess next to the Figure ("safe," "prophet," "danger," "protect," "peril," and "watcher."), it's safe to assume that the Figure is with the Waytes/All Seeing Coven.

Now, two of the most common theories around the figure are that the Figure is Florencia or that the Figure is telling Jimmy to protect Florencia. In a previous post here, I gave my reasons for why I don't believe the Figure is Florencia and why I lean toward the other theory more.

1. Appearance

Florencia and the Figure may look similar at first glance(short and purple), but there are smaller details that seem to indicate that these are two different people. My artist friend took a look at the two characters and helped me figure out the body differences between the Figure and Florencia.

Hair - while it may appear that Florencia and the Figure have similar hair, a closer look actually shows that Florencia has long hair tied up while the Figure has such short hair we can see the back of its neck.

Nails - Florencia have neatly trimmed nails with white nail polish while the Figure has Mother Spore looking claw-like nails.

Eyes - Florencia and the Figure have different eye shapes. The outer regions of their eyes, specifically the inner line that denotes the sclera, is different. It is tilted up more and wider on the entity.

Neck - the neck width of the Figure and Florencia is different with the Figure have a slimmer neck.

Chin - Florencia has a flatter chin. The Figure is more smooth in the line of the jaw to chin than Florencia.

Waist - the tapering for the waist from the ribs to hips is different.

Chest - Florencia has a bigger chest than the Figure, whose chest is much flatter.

2. The Words Seen Around the Figure

The words deciphered from the scribbled mess next to the Figure consist of: "safe," "prophet," "danger," "protect," "peril," and "watcher."

The one I want to focus on is "prophet".

The Prophet seems to be a title that Florencia goes by based on her ability to see into the future literally called "prophet" and this card on Maruu's twitter.

We can assume that the Figure is referring to Florencia when it mentions "prophet", which would mean if the Figure was Florencia, she would be referring to herself in the third-person (which doesn't make a ton of sense).

3. How Abilities Work in the DDVAU Universe

A majority of the people in the DDVAU universe have an ability, only one. It's not really a huge thing though as most abilities are pretty minor or not super useful in day to day life (ex. animal features, Tango - warm up stuff like kettle, Impulse - built in oven mitts, Jimmy - only hear minds up to meter).

So the fact that Florencia could possible have TWO powers and two powerful ones at that seems highly unlikely. Even Grian, who is basically incredibly powerful compared to other people in universe, only has one ability(Evolution); yes, it seems incredible versatile to the point where it seems like Grian has multiple abilities(invisibility, changing colors, super healing, ect.), it is still only one.

So unless Florencia's prophet ability can see into the future and turn her into a sleep-paralysis demon where her appearance is modified pretty extensively and she refers to herself in third-person and as the Prophet in this form, I find it highly unlikely that Florencia is the Figure.

Haunted by DDVAU Chp. 19

Sooooo, chapter 19 of DDVAU, where they have the Drink & Draw night at the Fairy Fort always activates the little nagging voices in the back of my head but not for the reason you may think.

When I was younger, I took a painting class. Now, we got to paint on canvas and there was a rule that the art teacher always told us: ALWAYS paint the sides of the canvas. It is programed into my head at this point😢.

Guess what Scar doesn't do in this chapter!

Look Scar, you do you, (your painting is better than anything I've every created) but I'm just letting you know every time I look at your wonderful painting, I can still hear my art teacher's voice😨.

New DDVAU Relationship Chart with Key

We recently got an updated version of the DDVAU Relationship Chart!

Now the big question is what does it mean? For this, I have a created a key based on my best deductions!

I'm also thinking that the yellow highlight may represent those people doing investigation around the Halloween incident.

Pearl for obvious reasons: her conspiracy theory about the Waytes .

Gem because Pearl is there and knows about Pearl's conspiracy theory .

Tango was involved with incident and Pearl wants to interview him.

Jimmy because Tango is there and he may want to help figure out what happened to himself and Grian. Or it could just be a double date thing, but that seems less likely in my eyes cuz Gem and Pearl aren't together yet.

Observations and guesses I've made based on the key above:

Ren and BigB had a previous relationship

Martyn was Grian’s other previous relationship (looks like it ended a bit rocky)

Tango and Scar were in a relationship previously?! (if so, the fact the Scar didn’t know what Tango’s mutant ability was is so much worse)

Mimic and Florencia have feelings for each other

Mimic is two-timing with a crush on CG as well (CG is just pulling everyone isn’t he)

Gem has a crush on Pearl

Florencia and Grian have some sort of rocky familial relationship (confirmed!)

Jimmy and Sparrow have a rocky relationship

The grey lines are concentrated in the CG-Emerald Soldiers-Waytes corner

HG wants to impress Grian (did someone say Tinted?!)

“Just Kiss Already!”: Part 2

~ a several part analysis of why Scar does like Grian already and why the heck they aren't together currently

During the Valentine’s comic, HG starts chatting with Grian and helps him carry his cat food back home. They even get into some deeper conversations near the end with HG even giving Grian the cookies he made SPECIALLY for CuteGuy, his infatuation. 

Now Scar is a decent guy and probably wanted to cheer Grian up, maybe he gave up looking for CG and didn’t want the cookies to go to waste. But the only interaction these two has seemingly had wasn’t very good, so the fact that HG

approached Grian again

helped Grian carry the cat food home

had a personal conversation with Grian

shared a detail of his PERSONAL life with Grian

gave Grian specially made cookies for his infatuation

AND didn’t immediately walk away after

seems to imply that HG seems to like Grian in some way; there is no way he is doing this for every stranger or even colleague he comes across.

However, this would be something one would do if one had an interest (romantically or otherwise) in someone 😏.

“Just Kiss Already!”: Part 1

~ a several part analysis of why Scar does like Grian already and why the heck they aren't together already

We clearly already know that Grian has a huge crush on Scar, but Grian is only half of the equation here. 

Scar also needs to be on board with a relationship. Luckily, I believe we have been provided with enough information to deduce that Scar does indeed like Grian and quite a bit from the looks of it.

Many of these hints pop up while Grian is interacting with Scar as HotGuy. Let’s start at the beginning:

Chp. 4, HG sees Grian and basically ruins his day by messing up Grian’s exams.

Question, why did HG do this?

Now, you may think it’s because he knows Grian, but Scar knows Grian, not HG. Not to mention, while Scar and Grian are colleagues, even though they have known each other for five years, they aren’t quite friends yet (they are work friends, just not "friends").

If you were a busy superhero and you saw someone you worked with walking down the street, do you immediately show off to them?  I know Scar can be a little extra at times and perhaps he was really bored, but this seems like something special since I highly doubt that Scar does this to all of his colleagues: just Grian.

Why? Why just Grian? What is so special about him Scar?

Chp. 26 & 27 Conversation Settings

We all know that the last two chapters have taken place in the same location, around the same time; but has anyone noticed during the two conversions taking place how different the vibes of the setting were? 

With Jimmy and Tango, the setting feels comfortable, a moment in time you would freeze and live in forever if you could.

With BigB and Grian, the setting feels somber, like something heavy is hanging in the air.

Obviously part of this has to do with what each pair is discussing: Jimmy and Tango fondly chatting about how nice things have been and admitting that they like each other. On the other hand, Grian and BigB are talking about the potential of an event that heavily affected Grian to be connected to their past; a past that affected them both badly and still haunts them to this day.

Jimmy and Tango’s topic is clearly lighter and happier than Grian and BigB’s topic, which could lend to how both settings these conversations take place feel.

Additionally, there are the colors that make up each setting. Jimmy and Tango’s environment is lighter and more colorful. It may be night, but there is white from the swing and cafe, bright colors from the flowers and the flags, and literal light coming from the fairy lights on the swing as well as Tango’s hair.

However, Grian and BigB’s environment is a lot darker with the night sky and the metal railing and chairs. Heck, even their clothing feels darker or at least duller than Jimmy and Tango’s.

I love the parallels of these two scenes: no words are spoken and both are of two people having a conversation, but you can see and feel the mood of each of the conversations; it’s wonderful.

Chp. 27 Analysis - I fear the future

Oh? Based on the color of the speech bubbles, must be BigB and Grian chatting.

Are you seriously eavesdropping Scar? I can’t say I’m surprised…

Yeah, why did you hide? Habit perhaps?

Oh Grian, they keep asking you because you went through a horrible experience and they care and are concerned about you.

However, I do understand being asked over and over about a horrible experience can get on one’s nerves, especially when they want to move on…

Grian is still troubled by this, immensely if the last chapters are anything to go on…

BigB’s right, there has been no closure. Just a horrible experience and the city’s superhero bugging him in the hospital…

Hints? What sort of hints?

Grian… Aren’t you CuteGuy? If it’s not that, you DID escape from the Watyes when you were younger; I feel like that would be a pretty big target on your back.

HOLY HECK! IS BIGB ASSOCIATED WITH THE WATYES AS WELL???

I don’t like that look Grian… What does that look mean?

We also got the purple-pink color with this oil slick patten that seems to pop up whenever Grian is uneasy, panicked, or on edge (chp. 14, 15, 22, 25).

My question as well Scar.

That’s interesting phrasing: “I asked you to be honest with me”. Does BigB have a history of lying to Grian?

Ok wow, BigB had to say he was serious for Grian to believe he was being honest; what happened?

Oh dear. This is a heavy topic for both of them.

Grian is clearly still close to or trusts his ex for him to assume this position; he doesn’t really seem like the touchy type.

BigB’s family was with the Watyes? Or the All Seeing coven?

Accountants huh? That makes sense why they weren’t a priority, you can always find accountants, they are pretty plentiful. Heck, even Skizz is one!

Compared to you?! Grian… What were you to them? Why are you so important to them?

The Guiding House? Is that another coven? Or a general help facility?

The coven… So they are probably talking about the All Seeing coven Pearl mentioned while talking about the Waytes.

All this emphasis on how Grian was special and different.

“Had to escape” - implies that the coven was never going to let Grian go. What were you to them, Grian? This also means that Grian would have a pretty big target on his back, a perfect reason for the attack.

Great point Grian. It has been 15 years, why now? Did they finally find him after all these years? Is there something approaching that they need him for? Why now?

Is their past with the All Seeing coven why BigB and Grian are still so close despite being exs?

“It sucks when you are honest” - ok seriously, what happened? What happened in the past where BigB was honest and it sucked? Was it when they broke up? I know it was on good terms and so that BigB could go abroad to study, but that must have messed Grian up; he seems to really love BigB.

Speaking of which, BigB is back from studying abroad. Besides general personal reasons, why wouldn’t they be back together? Is it because Grian has a crush on Scar? That doesn’t make too much sense since Grian has come to the conclusion Scarian will never happen and him and BigB seem to have good chemistry…

OK WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED? “Seems like I’m always sincere when you need a lie and a liar when you want the truth”!!! Communication issues? Not seeing eye-to-eye? WHAT HAPPENED??? Hey, at least this is a potential reason for why they aren’t back together.

“I still feel them watching me” - I mean, they are the All Seeing coven🙃 Ok, I’ll shut up now.

Oh Grian… BigB… I don’t know what you went through, but I’m so sorry.

…What happened back there? What did you see? What did they do?

So many questions, few answers, even more questions…

“Learn to love” - hand on Grian’s shoulder (love the implication that they were exs or maybe even that BigB still loves Grian (romantically or platonically)).

“The person I was before” - so BigB wasn’t on the outskirts, he was fully in the coven. 

Sounds like the coven had certain beliefs or practices that shaped a person. This is sounding more and more like a cult.

Yo! We got the doodle finally! 

This is a very sweet show of support. …If BigB is the Mimic, this is a little terrifying and ominous.

“We protect each other” - what horrible things led to this promise being made?

Wait, does this mean BigB and Grian were childhood friends? 

Wait, BigB knows about the wings. Doesn’t that mean he knows about CuteGuy? If he knows about the wings, he’s probably seen them when they weren’t withered and CG has such a unique wing pattern… Hmmm

BigB, that face does NOT fill me with confidence for the future…

My question as well Scar-

MARTYN WTF!!! Why do you look like you belong in a horror movie?!

Geez, look at that grip! Someone’s protective (or suspicious of Scar)

Ooo! Another instance of the shadow over Scar’s face looking like HG’s visor! Maybe this indicates that Scar’s fight or flight makes him go into HG mode. Or maybe Scar’s been pulled back to the hospital where Martyn was standoffish with him.

I mean, we already got doodles indicating that Martyn and Scar don’t get along, so this is probably to be expected in the future.

Oh! We got BigB’s surprised color: purple!  …Purple? Umm please let it be for his eyes and nothing else.

Scar is me when my friend taps me when I’m wearing noise-canceling headphones

Did…did Martyn ask where Scar was? How else would he know Scar was upstairs using the bathroom? How suspicious… Martyn has just met Scar, yet seems to have such a close eye on him. Similar to HG before…

Martyn, what is your game here? Is it because you are protective of Grian? I mean, you did just catch Scar eavesdropping on him but this does seem a little extreme…

Scar! You charmer!

Well, the darker side of this interaction is Scar has so much practice recovering this much from bad situations due to HG shenanigans and PR, maybe even for situations where he as to get info out of people *cough* *cough* Grian! *cough*

Crap! Scar, Scar! Do you plan on grilling BigB?! About what they were talking about?! What are you going to do, I don’t like the look on your face!

BigB, run.

Scar’s a man on a mission, BigB looks uncomfortable and scared, Grian looks amused and Martyn looks suspicious. I sense a disaster imminent

Scar, is this for info? Or maybe something else. Is this because BigB is so close to Grian?

Huh. I mean, I always kinda knew this in my subconscious but this chapter really illustrates how close Martyn and Grian seem to be, like almost BigB and Grian level. I know they are childhood friends but there seems to be something else here…

The DDVAU Classification System (Pt 5.5): Avians

Height & Flight

Usually, the wing span of avians change based on height: tall avians will always have smaller wings and short avians will always have bigger wings.

For example, Deryn has the biggest wingspan of the avians we know because of how short he is; the shorter the avian, the bigger the wingspan.

Reference - Grian's height is now 5,4

On the other end of the spectrum, Poli is tall for an avian and has smaller wings. Additionally, he can’t fly because of the placement of his wings on his lower back.

While there's a lot of winged avians in the capital, a lot of avians in the DDVAU universe don’t know how to fly.

 Avians need to learn how to fly, plus usually avians need a permit to fly and the system makes it hard for people to get one. (Grian was taught by Deryn!)

Feathers & Bones

Anything with feathers/wings could be considered an avian; some are more bird looking, others are more “human” looking. 

You can be an avian without being born with wings, although some people wouldn’t consider you to be an avian, mostly likely due to the lack of said wings.

Avians hair is feathers; soft feathers that kinda act like hair, but it’s just feathers!

Every avian has a different way of presenting feathers in the face (if they have a way); it's just variety.

Skizz is a "Kiwi" because he is a wingless Avian, it’s just an avian that can’t fly.

Avians tend to have hollow bones like birds so they are incredibly lightweighted, allowing them to be able to fly (and that's why CG has custom made guns!)

Inspiration & Design

Avians have different characteristics than birds, that’s why avians like Grian have a unique color or pattern in their wings 

Some avians did evolve to mimic bird patterns of wings or such, but not anymore in the modern times. For example, Jimmy isn’t a canary hybrid, he is just an avian.

When Doody and Maruu design avians, they may have a particular bird in mind, but it doesn't make them that bird, it's just a design inspiration.

All avians are inspired by multiple birds rather than just one and aren’t linked to actual birds, since it’s more of “humans with wings” rather than being something along the lines of being half-bird.

However, since avians need to hunt to survive (both small and large animals), they technically fall into the “birds of prey” category.

Avian behaviors

Avians often don’t like people touching their backs (due to their wings usually being there).

Their feathers fluff up when strong emotions arise(their hair are feathers so they do poof out even if their wings are hidden).  

Avians tend to grow and rip out their feathers when stressed.

They make nest-type rooms for themselves to be comfortable. 

Also when they get overworked over stuff they like to take baths or go on showers to calm down. 

Grian likes to perch over stuff when he is CuteGuy and as Grian he just sits on the arm rest of chairs

Society’s view of avians

The government views avians in a bad light mainly because most of the rebels / vigilantes known in history are avians or had a connection to birds, therefore, the government is very wary of them as a whole.

Some people consider those who only have feather hair to not be avians. If someone has wings or anything "not human", they are a mutant.

Hiding Wings

In the past, avians/any winged mutant used to be hunted down for their wings by humans so there is also that cultural fear of keep them hidden or not call out too much attention

Most avians with big wings for flight hide their wings using ponchos or coverings like that

It’s very rare for avians to be able to hide their wings like Grian(Grian is just really weird in general when it comes to mutants and their abilities).

Even though avians can’t really hide their wings if they are big, all they usually get in public are just looks and that’s it. Mutants are still common and accepted by a part of society.

Avians can undergo surgery to get rid of their wings. This is usually done with small ones and usually when avians are young (Ex. Jimmy) but it can be done with big ones and when the avian is older as well (Ex. Sparrow).  Just like any other limb when removed, an avian who had their wings removed can feel phantom pains from where their wings were.

Tango - Orange

Jimmy - Yellow

Scar - Green

I wonder if we'll see anyone else's color when they are surprised later on!
