TIL in 1915, San Diego hired a “rain maker” who used a secret mix of chemicals to “attract rain” for $10,000, payable if he filled their reservoir. It rained for most of January, destroying bridges, dams, and causing 20 deaths.

that was the Devil
I mean they wanted rain
His name was Charles Hatfield and I’m not saying that you shouldn’t make a deal with him, but I am saying that you should be very clear about the terms and conditions
theres so many things that are wild about this he had a recipe for the cloud making formula and gave -some- details about it such as how many ingredients it had, that it had to be aged in oak barrels, and that to work properly he had to erect a raised platform that the fumes from the formula could better rise up. the details about this imply that yeah, if you figured out what he did you could do it too after this he successfully went on to make rain for other local governments who knew, yeah, quite famously this guy CAN make rain
Everyone: Tsuna we'd follow you to the end of the world!!

Hello guys! If any of you follow me on A03 you’ll know I haven’t Posted in a while. And while I’m trying to work on all my stories I need to know which ones you all want next! So here’s a poll to see! Thank you!
memes i miss: Pooh Baseball
Ok so a lot of people are confused over this, allow me to give some clarity.
There’s this little flash game online from way way back, Pooh Baseball.
It starts off innocently enough as a nice little baseball minigame, but soon spirals out of control. No, it’s not doing creepypasta shit, but it’s just the difficulty ramps up. IT RAMPS UP HARD. It starts off with just introducing curve balls and stuff like that, but then people start cheating. For instance, Tigger can do physics-obliterating zig-zag balls, and the owl’s ones would disappear in mid-air. It was severely difficult, and when 4chan’s /v/ got a hold of this, any incredulousness towards the game soon evaporated. I guarantee that any little kids back in the day probably gave up quickly, but the people from /v/, battlehardened from Dark Souls, Touhou, Wario Ware and all sorts of reflex-driven games, took it upon themselves to try and beat it.
But then people from /v/ perservered and managed to push on and finally take on the final pitcher - Christopher Robin.
And they discovered the true depths of hell.
See, Chris is a cheating motherfucker. There is no other way to describe him. He took notes from every other pitcher (Or devoured all their souls to gain their power, depending on how memey you want to go with this), and can use every one of the tricks that the other pitchers can.
AND HE CAN COMBINE THEM.
This resulted in stuff like dissappearing zigzag balls and speed-changing screwballs. It was borderline impossible to beat him.
I should stress: The people playing this were from /v/. There were men who could go toe-to-toe with Gwyn with no armour and come out on top. There were some who could take on Remillia Scarlet and escape without a hit. There were people who could get through Oblivion with never levelling up.
And they almost all fell against this child and his celestial pitching arm.
And the memes began to flow.
I’ve played it myself, and got up to 6.
I don’t think I have the words to express how much I want to kick a nocturnal bird up the arse.
any time i hear the insufferable transphobic athlete arguments i think of that one time in middle school when my boys lacrosse team did a full-contact scrimmage against the girls team (who typically play with limited contact) and i, a six-foot, 180lb defender, got utterly laid-out by this 5-foot-nothing girl experiencing the newly-unleashed animosity accompanied by violent sport and as i looked up at my assailant from flat on my back i experienced a brief bout of heterosexuality and fell wildly in love and then had to be taken to the ER because i had a concussion
“from flat on my back i experienced a brief bout of heterosexuality” took me out
That was the concussion
Gay Bowser and Accident prone Luigi, the ship of the century.
(Really jazzed to see how the movie is looking so far)

Internet is back at it, again…..
When someone says harem to people, these kind of paintings come up in people’s mind.
L.F. Comerre. (1850 - 1916)
But, people who drew these paintings, they are called orientalists, have never seen a harem because NO STRANGER WERE ALLOWED TO ENTER THE HAREM UNLESS THEY WANT TO LOSE THEIR HEAD. So they painted what they dreamt of, since they were grown up with Western beauty concepts, they painted Harem girls as what their culture accepted beautiful.
BUT, at 19th century Persia, the Western beauty standards were not dominant. So of course, they had their own beauty standards and their own concept of beauty.
The more masculine a woman was, more beautiful she was accepted. The opposite was also true for men. Women with heavy brows and faint mustaches considered so attractive that they were sometimes painted on or augmented with mascara and young beardless men with slim waists and delicate features. In 19th century portraits of lovers, the genders are barely distinguishable, identified only by their headgear.
Young men without beards were the idols of beauty that time. Sexual mores and erotic sensibilities of 19th century Iran permitted homosexuality between these young men and older men.
BUT, after Iran started to be more modern, aka more Westernized, this beauty standards were lost. West beauty standards started to be more dominant and homosexuality was no longer permitted. Today, it is a crime to be homosexual at Iran.
This book, women with mustaches and men without beards, is about the beauty standards of Persia at Qajar dynasty. If you are interested, you can buy it and read. HERE is an interview with the author, Afsaneh Najmabadi.
At that time, Qajar princess was considered beautiful. Today, uncultured internet memers are making fun of her. Shame @ all of you.
EDIT: That’s not Pricess Qajar ffs….. Qajar is the name of dynasty, not the princess….
Varric in Dragon Age Inquisition being a famous author is so funny. Imagine you accidentally get pulled into leading a group of people trying to save the world, and the group helping you do that is a bunch of strong warriors and magic users, and then idk, famous author Neil Gaiman, who just happens to be really good with a crossbow
tumblr is my preferred social media site partly because it has real basement energy.
like, everything that happens on tumblr is kind of happening, spiritually speaking, in somebody’s basement. different kinds of basements in different kinds of posts, of course—sometimes the basement is finished and you’re down there with friends in a giddy slumber party and sometimes you are covered in mud and crouching gibbering in someone’s storm cellar, but that basement feeling remains.
twitter? instagram? tiktok? those are above-ground apps, my friend. out there in the open air where anything could find you. i’ll take my social media experience at worm-level, please.
My roommate (the one who hates septum piercings so much they make her gag) thinks my art is the most disgusting and ugly shit on the planet, and every time I announce that I've sold a piece or gotten into a show, she makes the kind of facial expression you'd expect of someone eating chili at a live autopsy and says, "I'm glad you're having fun! :)"
You're all misunderstanding; I love her so much and I'm having a great time. It's like when you're a kid and you chase other, less cool kids around the playground with a fun worm you found.
She doesn't consume any media besides sitcoms and reality TV, and doesn't have social media besides Facebook, so when I come to her with something even remotely bizarre, she just has absolutely nothing to compare it to. Like, when I show her something mildly weird that made like this:
She's just fully convinced that I personally invented the concept of body horror all on my own specifically to make her life a living hell. She thinks I'm the only person like this alive. It's so funny. I love her.
