Björk’s videos are always something to watch. With her latest songs, she released a couple magnificent videos both directed by Andrew Thomas Huang. For “the gate”, Andrew gives us a small deconstructed overview of the process behind this very unique creation. A lot of digital manipulation is going on, using motion capture for the character, 3D animation to create abstract shapes and other landscape designs. Watch the result if you haven’t yet.
The energy and musicality of this film is fascinating. Relating to the dynamics of the infamous Issey Miyake 3D steam stretch fabrics, this dancer duo moves in a cubic space with a feeling of freedom while still demonstrating rigorous technicity. The lighting plays an important role with a vivid and contrasted setup matching the choreography’s timeline.
Surreal vibes in this one-sequence music video made by Werkflow for Patten. A whole team of animators and riggers gathered on this fascinating project to deliver a one of a kind experience that truly stands out. Watch how the environment get twisted and how lights interact with it while this character nonchalantly sings the lyrics. Can’t get enough of it. Please more gems like this Werkflow !
Another genius video work by Thomas Traum for Kenzo FW16 prints. As always with TT, the direction is inspired by today’s real and virtual world, either his camera moves/angles feel close to what a 1st person view feels in a video game, or the large shots and the editing look similar to an authentic film (ie first and last scenes). The most creative part comes with the choice to show the richness of Kenzo prints as dense stellar objects rather than only simple textures. On the music side, another bold idea was to use a track from Mechatok & Toxe, forward music producers making people dance on crazy rhythms and energetic vibes. Shouts to everyone involved !
Immersed in a virtual environment, the latest video piece from Sam Rolfes delivers an incredible experience. Inspired by first person shoot gaming, this short animation recalls scenes from Doom or Crysis when everything’s chaotic but you’re deep into the action. Top layers display the visual identity of Amnesia Scanner while the background refracts through it, emplifying an overall alien feel.

Fast-paced editing of liquid environments and vegetal designs visited by a squad of dynamic balls, that’s the video for Akito “Catch Feelings”
Akito’s been gathering a reputation for a while for both his club and radio sets and releases for labels like Subskank and Trax Couture (plus, if you go out in London it’s impossible to not see him on a dancefloor somewhere – dude is about.) With five tracks to play with on Pleasure Pending EP, though, he gets a chance to show his diversity – tracks like ‘Degrade Gracefully’ are a bit more morbid than what we’re used to from Akito.

Nate Boyce and Daniel Lopatin aka Oneohtrix Point Never joined for a new package of frames. Looking like coming fresh out of a deep dream, machine-inspired Nate created an animated sculpture floating over a deserted void. Followed by a scanned area of a post-apocalyptic urban corner embalmed with a dense fog, it all reminds of some old cinematographic nostalgia. You suddenly feel hypnotized by a large animated collage showing organic machines under stroboscopic lights. A bit of a sci-fi twist arises towards the end showing a glass ball containing a living head, the whole thing suspended by hi-tech ombilical cords linked to this intriguing security-like machine.
I feel like watching X-Files again
Perfect match between real and virtual images orchestrated by fashion film maker Thomas Traum for this Hunter FW15 campaign. Witness the fitness of these adventurers going through a dynamic and leveled landscape. Amazing work on textures and sound give this ad a refined world feinting to be real. Not to forget some top notch lighting and keying to blend these well equipped youngsters in the final edit. Nice move Thomas!
Extra rad animation by enigmatic boy V5MT using a Kevin Carey track called Space Heater. It doesn’t seem to be an official music video although K.R.E.S. shows powerful edit rhythm and, as usual with V5MT, an intriguing universe full of fictional(?) symbols. The use of flying particles plus smoke combined with a very pristine landscape give room to these mystic rocks and symbols standing proudly as if they’ve never been discovered yet. At some point, a smoke cloud starts dancing and giving a turbine-like choreography in mid air while synthetic chimes resonate around majestically. Notice at the end the beautiful typographic work on the credits.
Now this is one beautifully strange animation. Eduardo Meza providing a dark and colourful journey of some animals going through a matrix world. Scientific analysis or inspired dream ?
Video for Michael Beharie - Damion
Some wonderful renders by Pussykrew who worked with Sevdaliza on her song “That Other Girl”
In this video, Sevdaliza has fallen victim to her own creation of a safe vacuum. Submissive to deep-rooted emotions and assumptions, Sevdaliza finds herself imprisoned in her own paintings and sculptures. Can she remain unflawed? She has become nothing more than a statue surrounded by surreal environments. Identity becomes a game, however she remains in control of the computed bodies. She breaks the stereotypes of gender roles and constructs to manifest a different notion of cyborgian identity. Sevdaliza’s husky vocals float over a mechanical bed that excites masculine energy and sexual adrenaline. As the song continues, a rhythmic tension builds slowly into a chaotic climax. Every retribution becomes more intense and personal, yet she isn’t able to break from that obscure statue of a woman.
Highly wonderful stop motion piece created for Floating Points new song “Silhouettes” by directors Pablo Barquín, Junior Martínez, Nathan Grimes and Anna Diaz Ortuño.
Here’s a message from the Directors: An oscillating stream of light attempts to intrude on an arid natural landscape, abstract light and a living environment merge, reacting to the dynamics of the music. The luminous abstract forms are produced by a light painting machine that, frame by frame, draws in a real environment the 3D animated figures.
