Yet, true and lasting peace and joy seem to elude them because they search for them in material possessions, achievements, fleeting pleasures, etc., which are ephemera. END-TIME CALAMITIES

As we approach the end of the liturgical year, the Church invites us to reflect on the impending apocalyptic or cataclysmic challenges. KENOTIC SACRIFICE: A CALL TO SELFLESS GIVING

In our world today, many people find it difficult to sacrifice for the sake of others or sincerely contribute to the growth of their society. While some have a propensity to defraud others to enrich themselves, others, like the hypocritical scribes, pretend to be philanthropic to gain cheap popularity.

However, this Sunday's readings highlight two poor widows: one shared her last meal with Elijah, and the other offered two small coins in the treasury, which Jesus declared more acceptable to God than the large sums from the wealthy. Despite their poverty, they gave all they had, trusting in divine providence. Incredibly, Jesus Christ exemplified self-emptying love (Kenosis) by offering His life for humanity's salvation, which surpasses all human sacrifices. In today's gospel reading, James and John, out of selfishness, requested to occupy prestigious echelons that would make them greater than other disciples during Christ's regime. Similarly, in our contemporary society, whenever a new regime is about to assume office, many people would begin to lobby for political appointments.

 

Regrettably, some of these individuals, who often speak against bad governance, may, like Napoleon in "Animal Farm," become more oppressive and heartless than their predecessors when given a chance to lead. Unfortunately, the rich man walks away, his heart heavy with sorrow, unable to part with his great wealth. In a quest for material or immediate satisfaction, many people often overlook the spiritual or eternal nourishment that only Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life, can give. Despite their relentless pursuits and accumulation of wealth, they still feel empty and dissatisfied, much like the Israelites who yearned for bread in the desert.

Like the crowds in today’s gospel who sought Jesus for miracles only rather than His teachings, some people today often approach God with a transactional mindset. They flock to the Churches not to serve God but only in search of solutions to their material needs. Once they get what they are looking for, they run away.
