‘Self-actualization’, a term used in humanistic and existential psychology, implies a bringing into actuality of something that has been a latent potentiality. The term ‘self-realization’ suggests a making real, or seeing as real, something that has been only a dream or a vague intuition. Similarly, Jung’s term ‘individuation’ refers on the one hand to developing individual consciousness, as distinct from mass consciousness, and on the other hand to becoming ‘un-divided’, or whole.

We who know that existence is a series of nested journeys. We who want to be empty of facile belief and habit. We who know all religions and mystical traditions and esoteric systems the world over, throughout all time, have been saying one thing. Nothing is separate. Each act and thought is part of our spiritual work. Through Self awareness, renunciation of attachment, and focused intent we can embody the change necessary to transcend ego boundaries. The illusions which keep us buried, imprisoned, asleep, in the dark, isolated, veiled, broken, strangers to our Self, will fall away. Everything we need is being broadcast from every direction within and without, if only we can be still, quiet, and empty enough to receive the message.

This Life is not biological life defined by objective and exterior properties, nor an abstract and empty philosophical concept, but the absolute phenomenological life, a radically immanent life which possesses in it the power of showing itself in itself without distance, a life which reveals permanently itself. A manifestation of oneself and a self-revelation which doesn’t consist in the fact of seeing outside of oneself or of perceiving the exterior world, but in the fact of feeling and of feeling oneself, of experiencing in oneself its own inner and affective reality.
