It was a little awkward, more-so on his behalf. I too didnāt know what to expect: āaah yes.. weāve met online and weāve been talking for a while but weāve never met face-to-faceā.
He didnāt announce his pre-arrival, so as the door to the room opened, I could faintly make out that it was him. Well, who else could it have been - arriving this late? His cobalt blue shirt complimented my white ājeansā shirt. Hair a little messy, boots, jeans - he was a little softer than what I thought of him. But it didnāt make me feel any less of him.
He sat beside me, close and snug, with Amy squished in the corner completing her assignment. At one point, I took the opportunity of our proximity and took a video of us together. It felt cute. Throughout the films Iād make little comments and try to start some humour with him (which more or less wasnāt that effective) and heād tell me a bit about his film work at his school. It was calm, but very surreal.
Unfortunately, I didnāt get to play my second song that night, which meant he wouldnāt get to hear me perform live. It was sad. Right after the show, he suggested we eat a little (because I hadnāt eaten dinner). In my mind, this sounded like a date. But I didnāt push it. I didnāt say it. I let the night roll. The atmosphere of the bar was soothing, and the cushions were so soft.
Whilst he skimmed through the menu, I whipped out my guitar and started playing soft tunes. The room was quite spacious and echoed lots, making me wonder if he even heard me playing. He did, however, comment when I played King For A Day, chuckling a bit. After a while, I got bored of my guitar. We ended up both just getting dessert: mango sorbet for me, and chocolate brownies for him. Time was making me more anxious by the second, but for some reason, it felt okay to be with him.
We talked a bit, a lot, about life and anything in between. Finding out his biological father was in prison gave me a shock, but to hear him talk about how cool it was to visit his father was very fascinating. I canāt recall his stepfatherās occupation.
He talked about how he used to like art, and thought of being an architect, but because heās taking math studies and is not all too fond of sciences, he dropped the thought. It was only in tenth-grade did film seem to click with him. Some time ago, he told me that he looks at films from a different perspective now.
Heād offer his brownies to me, once in a while. I didnāt like the taste of his brownies, but the raspberry sauce tasted nice.
At the end of it, he paid for the food (despite me telling him I could pay for myself) and made sure to help me a bit since I told him I was tired. We walked to my car, my guitar in his hand, side by side. As we neared the vehicle, my steps grew slower. In my peripheral view, I could see he stood a little frozen, not knowing what to do. Yet I turned back to him and embraced him, and he didnāt hesitate to return the gesture. It was light and brief, but I put so much meaning to it.
āBe safe,ā he whispered.
āThank you,ā was all I could say. I wish we could have stayed longer, but I knew I had to leave. The vehicle rolled out, and the little glimpse I had of him right then made me wonder whether the night actually happened. It was surreal.
He rode all the way from Hillsberg to Frithers - just for me. Wow. I know he said he might as well come because he has nothing better to do, but a part of me wished he came to see me. As in, he came because he wanted to meet me. Or maybe Iām just overthinking this. I want to believe that he did all the above because he liked me, but I wouldnāt know. They were all just kind gestures. Nevertheless, I lived in the moment, and accepted what I got for what it was. Good feelings.
The rest of the night, we messaged each other over the phone, talking about how awkward it was, exchanging little apologies, and maybe meeting up again in the future. He even encouraged me to take a singing offer which I got that night. Everything felt normal again. Unlike back at the cafe, I pushed myself to stay awake, outlining my economics homework. Heād message me in intervals, keeping me company.
